Only counting people you know quite well (say well enough to chat with so friends, family members or close colleagues sort of level) not passing acquaintances or friends of friends

3 I know well

A lot more if you widen that to people I knew from the estate i grew up on

If I was to guess I'd say more than 20. So many calls from my mum oh have you heard x is in prison now?...

Charlie2121 · 16/07/2024 21:30

Two of them were jailed for a short time many years ago for stupid stuff when they were young. It was very much a phase they both soon grew out of.

The 3rd one is currently serving life for murder. Without wanting to give any details of the case all I can say is that it was just about the most horrific crime imaginable carried out by literally the most unlikely person I know.

Think of your calmest, easy going most pleasant friend you have and then imagine being told that they have committed the most awful murder in shocking circumstances. Thats pretty much what happened. It still feels surreal and probably always will do.

One, but I know quite a few that have committed crimes, mainly from 2 or 3 decades ago though. Everyone I know now is law abiding and decent. At least at face value

My DH has a friend that couldn't afford to pay a Mags court fine of £100 I think (a motoring offence) and he rang up the court office and asked if he could go to prison instead. They said he could 'discharge' the fine by a week in prison. The lady said he could turn up on the Monday and advised him to bring some books. he turned up and they put him in with other harmless bloke, everyone was very nice, and on the Thursday morning they said they were chucking him out along with the other fine defaulters as they needed the space. He got a payment of £85 release money too. Nowadays it's changed, you still owe the fine.

I was just curious what was normal I suppose as I suspected my experience was skewed - it seems I was right Confused

Off the top of my head and only counting people I speak to regularly or semi regularly at the moment and know well enough to know when and why I think 6. Only 2 of those have been in the last decade and only one was for violent crimes (which were about 40 years ago)

Two - my current partner and a family friend of my mother’s. My partner’s first was a violent crime and then serious driving offences (many
years before we met, he’s a reformed character now), and family friend was for embezzlement.

Anonym00se · 16/07/2024 21:32

Grandfather (sexual offences)
DF (repeatedly breaching restraining order my Mum had against him)
DB’s best friend (drug dealing)
3 of the bosses at my old workplace (fraud)
BF’s FiL (fraud)
Ex-BIL (robbery)
Ex-student (armed robbery)

One person that I worked with has just been sentenced to 28 years for murder.

gatret · 16/07/2024 21:35

One, my Ex. Very nasty person and I no longer have contact with him.

HollyKnight · 16/07/2024 21:36

My former stepfather has been in prison. But other than him I only know people who have just not been caught.

One. My husband before I met him.

Same (I mean not your husband but mine 🙂)

Mirandawrongs · 16/07/2024 21:37

Several.
mostly my cousins. Mixture of drug offences, assault and being absolute twats (all deserved sentences)
one stabbed a bloke who raped her as a young girl, she stayed at scene and admitted everything.

sleepercellspy · 16/07/2024 21:39

One in my personal life, an ex boyfriend.

Professionally, quite a few. My previous role was one where colleagues were often recovering addicts and lots of them also had records and had been to prison or young offenders units.

TheKoalaWhoCould · 16/07/2024 21:40

Prison prison, none. Debtors prison, one.

PrancerandDancer · 16/07/2024 21:41

Growing up, three, including my mum's partner at the time. Used to go and visit all three.

Maybe more now as I think as few from school have served time.
