How many people do you know that have been to prison?

Only counting people you know quite well (say well enough to chat with so friends, family members or close colleagues sort of level) not passing acquaintances or friends of friends

Two.
Our former neighbour (now dead).
My former boss. He used to enjoy groping his employees (me included), only to graduate onto the students a few years after I left (we worked in a tutoring and extra curricular activities centre). Two of his victims were under 16. I don't know what to think. I moved cities to get away from him and got a new job, tried to put it behind me.

One is my dad. He's a serial offender, various mid level crimes. Been in prison many times over the years.

Another is a friend, when she was 18, very naive and it was her boyfriend at the time who got her involved in that life. She served a year and has never reoffended.

One of my siblings
a lot of friends from where I grew up

CornedBeef451 · 16/07/2024 22:33

My dad and ex BIL. That's all I think.

DF was in some sort of juvenile detention centre, twice, in his late teens, 60 plus years ago.

Ex BIL who I still see, proper prison in his early 20s but not sure why.

DangerDangerHighMoisture · 16/07/2024 22:34

I've never (as far as I'm aware!) met anyone who has been to prison, or convicted of any criminal offence at all.

Frightenedbunny · 16/07/2024 22:34

four…

my brother for being a knob when on drink and drugs and hitting some poor lad…

my brothers friend for dealing drugs..

my friends ex husband when he was involved in a car race and one of them hit a cyclist and killing him

All of the above have turned their lives around following the short sentences.

finally someone I worked with and trusted implicitly. Thought of him as a genuine, kind hearted guy… got a long sentence for trying to entice children on line to send photographs and meet up to have sex with him..

completely blind sided me!

ChampagneLassie · 16/07/2024 22:35

None. I’m reminded of a guy I briefly dated who cited how different we were when breaking up with me and said I’ve got friends in prison like it mad him cool. He was mid 40s. He was indeed right that we were very different 😂

fiddleleaffig · 16/07/2024 22:36

One. An ex. I sent him there

I have met a distant uncle that spent time inside for bigamy as he refused to go back to his first wife. Scandal of the family that is, but obviously I do not know him well

jazzyBBBB · 16/07/2024 22:40

One personally - a friend who stole some money but put it back and was caught on camera doing the putting back.

Also my hairdresser boss got sent to prison for selling coke from the salon 🤦🏻‍♀️

Everyone is 'squeaky clean' until they're not. You are very naive if you think that no-one that you know will ever be imprisoned.

I'm not naiive because I don't think that. Getting mixed up in an altercation on a night out which ends badly. Wrong place, wrong time. A car accident. A break in where you defend yourself but end up being prosecuted. Who knows what someone would do if they were caring for a relative with cancer at end of life at home who was screaming in pain and for you to help them end it. A younger impressionable member of the family making some poor choices and getting in with the wrong crowd. Being wrongly accused of something you didn't do. Anything could happen to anyone.

LittleBigLoner · 16/07/2024 22:44

I used to see a guy who had been to prison. He had a bad upbringing and fell into drugs and such. He served time for violent assault while being drugged up. Served his time and came out, had a couple kids and is now a stay at home dad to his severely disabled child. Honestly the nicest bloke. He also does lots of volunteer and charity work plus open unlearning on mental health and addiction etc. very open and honest about his experiences and truly turned his life back.we are still good friends now and keep in touch.

Rebusa · 16/07/2024 22:45

Growing up I knew about 2 people in and out of prison - older teens /young adults. Not in contact with them now.

My close friends partner has been in prison and a guy I was talking to briefly online also spent time behind bars. So I’d say 4.

Dymaxion · 16/07/2024 22:46

Four - two were involved with separate armed robberies, one for burglary and another for dangerous driving. None re-offended, they all turned their lives around. Which I think is probably unusual ?

TheFairyCaravan · 16/07/2024 22:47

None that I know well but two that I know of.

One man my sister went to school with who was jailed for being involved in a massive drugs gang. Think millions of pounds worth of drugs.

Another was a man who lived next door to us, briefly, in the RAF who had indecent images of children on his computer.

Gingerkittykat · 16/07/2024 22:48

4

My sisters ex who was convicted of being a fairly big time dealer and having a cannabis farm. I think he spent 4 years in prison, some of it was in a low security prison where he went on work placements and had more freedom. Several years later and he lives a crime free life.

A young relative who spent a short sentence for assaulting a security guard when high on coke. She was in a YOI and is currently 3 years drug free.

A young adult who was friends with my family while she was growing up. I think it was assault and a recent article in the local newspaper it looks like she might be heading back there.

My friend who was caught stealing some money when she was 16 and homeless. It was back when they had very short sentences (30+ years ago), she served a week in prison.

Another one who I barely knew was a boy from school who brutally assaulted and raped a woman leaving her tied up to a tree. It was a shock because he was always a nice person when I knew him.

Wumblewimble · 16/07/2024 22:49

None that I know of

Blackcats7 · 16/07/2024 22:49

None

StoatofDisarray · 16/07/2024 22:51

None.

Andthereitis · 16/07/2024 22:53

At least two where I used to live. One for manslaughter way before I met him. The other for bringing drugs into the country.
I knew other people, not well enough thank goodness, who were habitual offenders and crime would drop like a stone when he was locked up.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/07/2024 22:54

My elder brother was sent to a young offenders institution in the 1980s because he stabbed someone

I’ve had no contact with him since our first child was born.

Mylovelygreendress · 16/07/2024 22:55

Two . A former school friend was jailed for embezzlement.
Also , a close friend of DB was jailed for killing his wife as she had told him she was leaving him . He claimed Diminished Responsibility so his sentence was reduced considerably. I knew his wife’s family and they were devastated especially as the DC moved in with the paternal grandparents and had no contact with their mother’s family.

TarnishedMoonstone · 16/07/2024 22:55

Two people I’ve known in my personal life, I think: one was a political prisoner overseas and the other was for sex crimes. Have met various others here and there.

Raveonette · 16/07/2024 22:55

One - ex BF's stepdad.

DH knows one too - someone he chats to at the gym.
