How many people do you know that have been to prison?

Only counting people you know quite well (say well enough to chat with so friends, family members or close colleagues sort of level) not passing acquaintances or friends of friends

Unfortunately too many. As a teacher in what can only be described as a very challenging area, many of my ex pupils ended up in the prison system. But Ive also taught others who’ve made a great success of their lives.

Waitingfordoggo · 16/07/2024 21:11

Two I think. My best friend’s Dad growing up (same as a PP!) And one of my cousins who was a troubled lad with substance abuse problems and probable learning difficulties. (He was born early 70s and I’m not sure anything was ever diagnosed or recognised and he has long since died.)

Overtheatlantic · 16/07/2024 21:12

None.

DorisDoesDoncaster · 16/07/2024 21:14

About 25 years ago, a then 18 year old who I knew from primary school took a load of pills to Glastonbury to try and sell. Absolute plonker.

Bearybasket · 16/07/2024 21:14

I was just curious what was normal I suppose as I suspected my experience was skewed - it seems I was right Confused

Off the top of my head and only counting people I speak to regularly or semi regularly at the moment and know well enough to know when and why I think 6. Only 2 of those have been in the last decade and only one was for violent crimes (which were about 40 years ago)

None.

Lidlisthebusiness · 16/07/2024 21:15

Two. My brother in law and a man I worked closely with and used to socialise with. Both shocking.

Bloom15 · 16/07/2024 21:18

None

OhHelloMiss · 16/07/2024 21:18

One

But I work in a men's prison so see them coming in in their 70's/80's for historic crime due to advanced technology!!

So I'd say you all have time yet to build your lists!

Totallyaddictedtobasss · 16/07/2024 21:20

None because the OP asked for people you’re close to / know quite well

Not a friend of a friend of a dad of a friend or whatever.

What about you OP?

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/07/2024 21:20

When I was in hospital having DS there was a prisoner on the ward who had just had her 6th child and was chained to her prison warden.

ApolloandDaphne · 16/07/2024 21:21

Two. My SIL and my friend's DH.

Appledoughnut · 16/07/2024 21:21

One. My husband before I met him.

sentfrmmyiphone · 16/07/2024 21:22

when you say 'been to prison'... does that count the staff? if thats the case... lots! been sent to prison? professionally... hundreds... personally... so far 1 impending

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 16/07/2024 21:22

Professionally I know lots. But I know that is not what you were asking.

Personally I know 3 quite well. Two were very good friends of my parents who went to prison years ago for mortgage fraud. A huge shock to everyone who knew them. The other was the mother of one of DD1's school friends who I also knew quite well who went to prison for theft from her employer. Again a huge shock to everyone who knew her. They all pleaded guilty. The shocking thing was they all had young dependant children at the time who were really affected by the absence of their parents. They all knew they were likely going to get custodial sentences (although the wife of the couple did have some hope that she would be spared jail) and had to make arrangements for the care of their children between their arrest and sentencing.

LateDecemberLove · 16/07/2024 21:22

I know quite a few, I wonder if there's some corellation between where you grew up/live and how many people you know who have been to prison.
I grew up in North London, a very well known area (not in a good way).

Portfun24 · 16/07/2024 21:22

None, my eldest brothers been to court but got community payback for a fight he was in years ago.

TeamPolin · 16/07/2024 21:23

One. Many years ago.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 16/07/2024 21:23

None.

Scrub that just remembered. Neighbour when DH and I lived in Europe. He’d been banned from driving for drunk driving but was allowed to ride a scooter to go to work and back. Caught drinking in local bar, scooter outside so he went to prison for a few months.

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 16/07/2024 21:24

Quite a few. That’s life in South West London for you

Eminybob · 16/07/2024 21:25

One. An ex boyfriend when I was very young, went to prison for 3 months while we were together for assaulting a man for speaking to me.
I visited him in prison every week and then ran away with him when he came out.
Inevitably he ended up being emotionally and physically abusive to me and left my life in tatters.
Yes I'm a fool. This was 20+ years ago.

He is now married to one of my best friends from back then, she is the bigger fool as knows exactly what he is and what he did to me and is old enough to know better.

Eminybob · 16/07/2024 21:26

Oh, 2 actually, a friend when I was a teenager's mum got jailed for fraud.

TurtleMoon · 16/07/2024 21:28

A pupil I taught is currently serving 5 years for a sickening, violent attack on a 16yo. I'd recognise him if I saw him so I think that counts. Probably more former pupils but if they've no links to the school and don't get their mug shot in the paper I'm unlikely to know.

DanglingMod · 16/07/2024 21:28

Zero

Sheepadoo · 16/07/2024 21:30

4, 3 family members, 1 (ex) friend, not in contact with any of them now.
