How many people do you know that have been to prison?

Only counting people you know quite well (say well enough to chat with so friends, family members or close colleagues sort of level) not passing acquaintances or friends of friends

Quite a number due to my job.

Several.
mostly my cousins. Mixture of drug offences, assault and being absolute twats (all deserved sentences)
one stabbed a bloke who raped her as a young girl, she stayed at scene and admitted everything.

😳 I can't even say she deserved to go to prison, fair play to her

BarryKentPoet · 16/07/2024 21:43

Further to this, I have close contact with 2 murderers every day.

0 close to me
3 I know but not closely

Mumoftwo1316 · 16/07/2024 21:46

None but only because sentencing is so ridiculously lenient. I've known two people who did disgusting crimes and only got suspended sentences.

I know, there's a prison capacity crisis. But I think it's bonkers that people can be put away for, say, fraud or burglary, but others can walk free from sexual crimes.

Fraud and burglary are bad too obviously but they aren't in the same league imo.

3

Baneofmyexistence · 16/07/2024 21:46

Family and friends - one but they have since passed away.

Several parents of children when I was teaching for a variety of reasons, from murder to drugs offences.

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 16/07/2024 21:48

2 in my personal life. Lots professionally.

CharlieDickens · 16/07/2024 21:49

At the moment, 1. I don't see him or his family anymore. Apparently he's innocent. I believe it's a strong case of denial.

However, my ex may be facing charges of rape and sexual assault so in a year it might be 2.

deplorabelle · 16/07/2024 21:50

Four

One wrongfully convicted of poll tax non payment despite having proof of payment (eventually overturned in higher level court. Awful flagrant failure of process).

One colleague banged up abroad for human rights protest. (Bit of a mad one, not sure what she was doing there)
Two for various climate protest actions (both been inside at least once)

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 16/07/2024 21:50

2 family members
1 guy who murdered my two friends was a local

TheFormidableMrsC · 16/07/2024 21:51

A Friend’s dad.

hattie43 · 16/07/2024 21:53

None

ForObviousReasons24 · 16/07/2024 21:53

Just one. Myself. Quite recently actually.

RogueFemale · 16/07/2024 21:54

None, and not even a friend of a friend.

NotMyDayJob · 16/07/2024 21:54

One (that I know of). My grandfather went to prison for fraud. My hazy understanding is he did an Arthur Fowler with the Christmas boxes. However it would be a stretch to say I was close to him, he died when I was 8 or 9 and I only met him a few times. But he's a close relative technically.

StormingNorman · 16/07/2024 21:58

Big fat zero. And only one person I vaguely know who did time for fraud.

I know quite a few, I wonder if there's some corellation between where you grew up/live and how many people you know who have been to prison.
I grew up in North London, a very well known area (not in a good way).

It definitely does, if I was to count the amount of people I know in passing from my neighbourhood that I know have been to prison I’d be here all day and 4 out of the 6 I mentioned grew up in this neighbourhood.

Prison prison, none. Debtors prison, one.

I didn’t know debtors prison was still a thing, even in recent history Shock

Two. One was an old friend of my parents who went in young, got out, reformed and made a very successful life.

The other was a guy who worked for the guy who does our garden/odd jobs. He had done time for drug offenses. He was the nicest most hardworking guy ever - just lovely. He died of a drug overdose last year.

I saw one of the Enron guys in Florida a while ago- he was known by the people I was staying with. He and his wife both did time. He was living his best life in his multi-million home on the beach.

Carebearsonmybed · 16/07/2024 22:03

None and I wouldn't want to.
