Has anyone else had their Nectar points nicked?

I checked the app yesterday and noticed I was down several thousand points.

Not a huge deal as I don't use it much so it wasn't a large amount of money, but I'm baffled as to how it can have happened.

The points were spent in Golders Green near the beginning of the month and I was 400 miles away. I've never been to GG in any case, and not to London in a couple of years.

Anyway Nectar are refunding and have closed the account and opened a new one for me, but how did they manage this??

Sainsburys would be better installing a better security system than keep coughing up for all the stolen points

ShamblesRock · 17/10/2024 22:02

I know this thread is a couple of months old, but the same has just happened to me.

I opened my Nectar app earlier and it said I had £8 worth of points, it should have been well over £100. 500 points spent a few days ago, and then £135 the next day. I'm in the NE and both transactions were in the London area.

Nectar were very helpful, closed the account, new one set up and fingers crossed I get the points back.

I can't find any info about how it happened though.

Uselessatbeingaperson · 17/10/2024 22:07

Happened to me years ago I lost £90 worth which was for Christmas. I've not used a loyalty card since.

Let me know if your points turn up.

They were also very helpful with me, and I got the new card eventually, but the promised points have never appeared.

This is the prompt I needed to chase them, but to be honest it's also put me off the whole scheme.

I will do. It's a little annoying as there was about £8 worth of points actually left on the old account which seem to have also disappeared. Also it has lost all my smart prices etc on the app.

ShamblesRock · 23/10/2024 15:05

Mine have suddenly appeared on my new card / account, I can't see any email confirmation of this though.

I think I have possibly lost about £8 worth that were left on the old card (maybe the thieves had a little bit of morals in them) but I'm not going to making to much of a fuss.

Kerfuffled · 02/11/2024 18:24

This has just happened to me too. Fortunately only £12.50 worth of points but spent in 2 transactions in Maidenhead and Croydon. I'm in Scotland. Sainsburys help advises you to notify them immediately but their helplines aren't open again until Monday. This Is Money covered this earlier in the year. There's a link above. Could anyone tweet them this thread and let them know it's still going on as Sainsburys don't appear to be doing much about it?

ShamblesRock · 02/11/2024 18:42

@Kerfuffled I hope you manage to get it sorted, to be fair to Nectar I did get everything sorted very quickly.

I read one article and there was theories as to how it might have happened, but none of them seemed likely. The upshot was that they probably do know, but obviously remain tight lipped, and whilst measures could be put in place, it is probably cheaper to refund the customers affected. I guess most of the time it is your £12.50 rather than my £140.

Interesting that a lot seems to happen in the London area, but different stores.

Tightfishedtwat · 02/11/2024 18:46

This happened to my DP. They froze his Necter account t and eventually refunded but they haven't unfrozen the account so he can't access it anyway.

Mine have been nicked for years! For some reason they go to my best friend (I have literally no idea how that happened).
But she tends to struggle more with money than me so I let her keep them for her christmas shopping.

Umm - so the person who knows your date of birth, your mother's maiden name, the name of your childhood pets, the street you lived in, the names of your children...

It's a bit of a poser, isn't it?

Thanks @ShamblesRock - still no refunded points here :-(

Just had this too. I save them all year for the xmas shop so don't access my account regularly and we only realised when DH wanted to put his card onto his phone and I couldn't get into my account. Contacted them online and all points were spent in London. They clearly know where you live and shop so it was obviously fraudulent. I couldn't tell you how many points we had but they've refunded us around £100 which is probably about right (maybe a bit low). Lesson learnt and I'll keep a closer eye on them in future.

Franhollywood · 02/11/2024 19:54

Yes had this last year. Nectar were good and added £10 extra in points. Absolute faff to reinstall the app though

Hoplolly · 02/11/2024 19:55

This is happening so much at the moment, I've seen it on loads of local FB groups.

Grumpysawus · 02/11/2024 20:02

I had no idea about this so just checked my app and 2x 500 points spent in Hackney in same day in January. I thought I should have more than I do now but don’t regularly shop at Sainsburys so don’t check.

thingsineverthoughtidsay · 02/11/2024 20:02

Same. About £70 spent at a petrol station in London. They were all refunded along with an extra £10 worth. Their website says they have extra security measures if you’re spending them in a Sainsbury’s you have never been in, but that’s clearly not the case.

My two were in London, I'm in the NE, there are about four stores that we use with any regularity. The only other one is the one near my parents in the Midlands, so completely outside of my usual areas. To there then be no additional security when someone spends over £100 in one transaction which is not usual activity, especially in a store never used before, seems madness.

It is obviously an issue now you can have your details in the app or in Google wallet (et al) rather than having to have a physical card.

PinkyGold · 02/11/2024 22:35

Not Nectar but Tesco Clubcard. Someone hacked in, changed my gender, name and address and stole £90 in vouchers. Customer support wouldn't speak to me as I wasn't male, Muslim name (this is not anti Muslim, just stating the facts) so I had to log in change my details back and then they would talk to me. I got the points back.

Thriwit · 03/11/2024 00:08

I had this happen to me recently too. £340-worth of points stolen! They were spent at a petrol station & store in Kettering - I live in the NW and have never been to Kettering. Nectar closed that account, opened me a new one and gave me my points back. I then spent them on my weekly shop over the next few weeks and transferred the equivalent money into savings 😅

Maggiethecat · 03/11/2024 00:30

😧 never knew this was a thing. I noted yesterday that I have about £500 of points saved over the years. Will try to get the app to keep track!

Maggiethecat · 03/11/2024 00:47

I’m in Scotland but wonder about this recent addition of points from Sunderland which I’ve been nowhere near?

Has anyone else had their Nectar points nicked?
DiddlyDooDar · 04/11/2024 13:47

Trying to report stolen Nectar Points. Holding on for 20 minutes then told call back in 2 hours because there is an outage. Probably system overload because this seems to happen to a lot of people who are all trying to report stolen points. Nectar need to get their act together. Also, if anyone has any other way of contacting them like an email, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

When I checked at the weekend and realised they'd emailed me a month ago saying that they'd put the points back into my new account (they hadn't), I immediately replied to ask them what had happened.

I got an automatic reply saying that they no longer responded to queries via email and I'd have to contact them by phone or online chat.

I'm very close to giving up. I've lost all faith in the whole scheme - it seems a bit pointless (ha!).

Yep happened to me last week. £40 worth of points used in a petrol station in Cardiff ... I'm in London. Nectar were pretty good to be fair. Cancelled old card and set up a new one with the missing points.

Hi, I think you need to freeze the account now or spend them. If they used your number successfully they will now have a receipt showing how many points are on your account.
