Has anyone else had their Nectar points nicked?

I checked the app yesterday and noticed I was down several thousand points.

Not a huge deal as I don't use it much so it wasn't a large amount of money, but I'm baffled as to how it can have happened.

The points were spent in Golders Green near the beginning of the month and I was 400 miles away. I've never been to GG in any case, and not to London in a couple of years.

Anyway Nectar are refunding and have closed the account and opened a new one for me, but how did they manage this??

Happened to me years ago. A local garage swapped our nectar card which had over £100 in points and spent the points on Argos vouchers. Nectar kept delaying the refund saying it was part of a wider fraud / credit card scam at the garage. In the end we gave up.

Here... Article.

Hmm. So it happens, but they won't say how.

I'm glad James got his points back! They only managed to get 3000 from me.

A few years back, mine were spent on Apple gift cards. I did get them back though

Peckhampalace · 16/07/2024 14:07

Mine were, just before Christmas and they were used twice so I had a massive negative balance (saved all year). Apparently the system takes time to update when they are used so someone used them twice.
Account closed and points refunded very quickly
DH had had a replacement card just before so I thought it might have come from that but nectar obviously couldn't say.

I'm sorry you didn't get yours back. It sounds like they've decided not to fight the issue now.

I wonder if it's one of those occasional internal frauds that sometimes happen in retail, and they reckon it's more cost effective/lower reputational risk to just take the loss.

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 16/07/2024 14:14

My sister had hers nicked.

It seems it's happening from within the organisation, which they're not likely to admit.

Janiro · 22/07/2024 11:14

I had 11500 points taken off my account on 16 July - in Edgware. I live in Cheshire. Luckily I spotted it the next day (thanks to a post on Martin Lewis MSE site regarding a Nectar offer). I contacted Nectar and they are investigating. They cancelled my card and are issuing a new one, still not arrived. They say they should be able to refund my points (worth £57.50).

AzureAnt · 22/07/2024 11:24

Yes!! 100 quids worth nicked. Sainsburys Petrol station and supermarket in North London. 200 miles away. I rang the nectar helpline and they were very helpful. Cancelled my card and sent a new one with the point reinstated. I don't let my points go over 50 quid now, I spend them and out the money saved onto a sainsburys gift card to shop at Christmas. The security around nectar cards is very weak, more so since the till system changed over a few years ago. Before that you could only use nectar points in your home store. If you wanted to use them at a different store, you had to ring the nectar helpline with your details. It must be costing Sainsburys an absolute fortune to reinstate all the stolen points

SabbatWheel · 22/07/2024 11:27

Yes, I had all my points taken years ago and used to purchase Magic: The Gathering swap cards (which I’d never even heard of).

It took aaaaages for Nectar to sort it out, but they did in the end.

Tightfishedtwat · 22/07/2024 11:34

This happened to my DP. Apparently t they have given them back but he cannot access the account any longer and have issued him a new card. Necter claim they don't know how to let him have his points back

NotMrsTumble · 22/07/2024 11:39

I need to chase again. I had about £150 worth nicked in June. Again spent in London, I live in Scotland. Nectar have opened a new account and sent me a new card, so but no points.... It's frustrating as there's no verification required to spend points. No pin etc.

henlake7 · 22/07/2024 11:39

Mine have been nicked for years! For some reason they go to my best friend (I have literally no idea how that happened).
But she tends to struggle more with money than me so I let her keep them for her christmas shopping.

Nectar are talking out of their arses. Of course they can put points on. Get back on the phone and insist on it

Evenstar · 22/07/2024 11:50

My DH lost £35 (7,000 points) and they had spent them at a petrol station on the A1 hundreds of miles from where we live.

Nectar sent a new card and the points were put on it, it took a few days to register on the system and he had trouble claiming points the first time he used it in store, but it’s fine now.

We have been spending some points as we go along since then to keep less points on the card.

IsThisNameTaken · 22/07/2024 11:58

Yes! 43,500 in one day in two Sainsburys in east London. Left me with about 1000 points. No argument from Nectar to get a new card with the points added back on though (having said that, it hasn't arrived yet and was ordered over a week ago - thanks for the reminder!).

Oldfatandfrumpy · 22/07/2024 12:14

I lost several thousand points, once again spent in London

StaySpicy · 22/07/2024 13:02

Yes, about a month ago had £46 worth of points stolen in Sunderland or something when I live nowhere near. Issued a new card and reinstated my points within 2 or 3 weeks but very annoying as I haven't figured out how to link my smartshop app with my new card yet so can't use it.

Ganog · 22/07/2024 13:04

I spend mine as soon as I’ve accrued the minimum 500 points

ditalini · 22/07/2024 13:39

Wow! I feel like the thieves drew a short straw with my card as they can't have bought much more than a couple of meal deals. I wonder if a few people with access to the system are selling long lists of card numbers and then the end users just plug them all in to see what they can get?

I'm still waiting for the replacement card but they said up to 10 days so we're still well within that.

Going by this thread, they definitely CAN replace the points on a new card.

sleekcat · 22/07/2024 14:23

Yes, it happened to me last year. They refunded me and gave me extra points. My points were used miles from where I live, in a place I've never been.

RunningKatie · 22/07/2024 14:27

Happened to me too, they were spent on Apple gift cards as a pp said.
It was just before Christmas and we lost £75 ish worth which I'd saved for the toy sale deals. Had to have a new card and the points put onto that which took ages.
Have never let it build up like that again.

FannyCradocksDoughnut · 22/07/2024 14:30

I don't let them build up anymore I spend them as soon as I can.

RenoDakota · 22/07/2024 14:40

Yes! It happened to me last week. I saw on the app that I had 'redeemed' 2,000 points in a Sainsbury's I have never been to. (I haven't redeemed any points anywhere.)
Phoned them up and they said they would cancel my card and send me a new one. Also said they would give me the 2,000 points back.
I never use the physical card, just the app, but they said they had to do it this way. And I can only use the app again once the physical card has arrived in the post. It is not here yet.
But also, I am supposed to uninstall the app and reinstall it but even then can only use it after logging in from a desktop first.
What an absolute faff.

Q124 · 22/07/2024 14:41

This happened to SIL a year or so ago. They refunded them all.
