But he was a criminal. And taking drugs. Not exactly a choir boy.

Exactly. He should’ve been in prison

OhHelloMiss · 15/07/2024 15:08

@cattery why?

I think the machete attack and the suspicious go fund me is what lost a lot of public sympathy.

Completely different to a tv doctor on holiday with his wife, who then didn’t collect £40k from the public?

I don’t think I’ve ever cared less about someone missing/a body being found.

I guess a tv doctor and his wife don’t need the money.
However I do find the Jay Slater go fund me not quite right.

It's saying a body believed to be jay has been found in the masca area and it looks like he suffered an accident/fall

Isn't it crazy how they can search and search the same area but miss the bodies. Same with Nicola too

yeah it's almost like he was killed by someone who hid the body and then later took it somewhere obvious to dump

Megifer · 15/07/2024 15:06

Yea tbh I should have said first holiday with friends, my bad.

I don't think it was even his first holiday there with friends.

They were regulars on the scene, him, Lucy etc.

But he was found near where his mobile last pinged.

Thought his mum said it was his first holiday with pals?

Jay Slater the evening before he went missing

Jay Slater: Teenager missing in Tenerife was on first holiday with friends

Jay Slater hasn't been seen since he left his friends in Tenerife 48 hours ago.

That's why I want to know if the rolex was still on him or not.....

I thought it was pretty clear I meant generally, what with me saying "generally" an all.

Also rest of my post - the bit you left off your c&p, makes it clear what I meant - "no wonder he had a bit of a questionable past (as did the lad who was attacked by the gang Jay was with)."

Edited to add the rest of my post that was accidentally not included in the c&p that make it clear I meant, err, generally, even if the word "generally" didn't make that clear.

Edited

So you think it's his upbringing that led to this or am I misunderstanding?

niadainud · 15/07/2024 15:21

itistooeasy · 15/07/2024 13:14

and you want to “chat” about it

Exactly. I really don't understand why people start threads like this which are simply repeating what's in the news. It's in poor taste, imo.

I don't know if it's his upbringing as such. But GENERALLY people who have good people around them and people who look out for each other don't end up in situations or lifestyles where they are a bystander to a machete attack, or end up getting battered by men at the age of 12 (think it was 12?). Or end up going off somewhere miles away on holiday possibly with a stolen Rolex.

Well and yet here you are, clicking on it, reading and commenting. Contributing to the clicks and putting the thread in Trending.

It's a sad ending to a young life, and heartbreaking for his family whom I'm sure held on to some hope, however futile.

Beth216 · 15/07/2024 15:26

I'm glad he's been found and it's no surprise that his body was actually near where he last pinged and that he had some sort of fall/accident. It sounds as if he fell into a ravine that was more difficult to access and search.

It's very clear that the reaction is different.

But the essentials are the same. Brit on holiday makes decisions that lead to a fatal incident in hostile terrain.

Probably both will be held to be misadventure (or whatever the parallel term is in those jurisdictions)

“Makes decisions that lead to fatal incident” implies that anything from potentially taking a wrong turn and not having enough water is the same as allegedly hanging out with drug mules and attempting to screw over drug dealers/commit burglary”.

Clearly not the same, clearly one is more unfortunate than the other. MM’s death was a tragedy, and very sad. This is completely different.

JennyBeanR · 15/07/2024 15:28

Idealidealist · 15/07/2024 13:56

But it's headline news on the BBC, radio, etc.

Why do you need to add to that? What do you want from your thread?

I'm sure anyone who listens to radio, watches TV or accesses newspapers online has heard about it.

Because this is a discussion forum and the people who come here wish to discuss news items.

Bashes head against a massive brick wall

This has been covered several times within this thread. Area he went missing = massive, hilly, challenging terrain filled with blind spots and ravines. But yeah, go on, join the conspiracy crew if that floats you.

paywalled · 15/07/2024 15:30

Jimblebells · 15/07/2024 15:17

That's why I want to know if the rolex was still on him or not.....

So you're saying Jay was killed where his phone last pinged.

Then his body was moved somewhere else.

And then the killer moved it back to where his phone last pinged?

Cattery · 15/07/2024 15:32

@OhHelloMiss He was a member of a violent gang who attacked another man with a machete then laughed about it in court

Sweetenuf2 · 15/07/2024 15:34

Cattery · 15/07/2024 15:07

Exactly. He should’ve been in prison

The irony is if he had been subject to more strict sentencing he might have still been alive, I don’t agree that a young man who has been involved in a violent attack should be allowed to go abroad so soon after .

There should’ve been some restrictions on his passport for a number of years IMO.

There’s a problem with jail capacity, they’re avoiding sending people to jail but they need to think of other sanctions.

It’s still very sad though, he clearly wasn’t thinking straight as he began his long journey. At least his family will finally know what happened to him though.

FrancisSeaton · 15/07/2024 15:34

It's one thing being over confident and making an unwise decision and quite another being involved in organised crime and ending up coming a cropper

SSBBW · 15/07/2024 15:35

Will we ever know if he was thrown down this ravine vs fell. He was young and fit, doubt he'd have fell.

TakeOnFlea · 15/07/2024 15:41

"He was young and fit, doubt he'd have fell."

He was off his head on drugs and gurning on the videos several hours earlier and was thirsty and without water when he started walking. Doesn't take a genius to work out how he might've ended up slipping down a ravine or similar does it?
