Sad but inevitable outcome.

At least this will allow some closure for his friends and family.

Yes.

Search for what?

Search and rescue teams are in most places where there are hikers and trekkers.
Tenerife isn't an ''Easy'' place for trekking, and search and rescue can be used to help others who may need search and rescue.

There are lots of mountain and fell rescues in UK too.

A waste? I mean, not really. He was charged with cracking someone’s skull open. I think the world will cope without him.

He wasn't reformed, either. He continued to steal, etc...Not a nice guy. Sad for his family though.

SallyWD · 15/07/2024 14:41

Billyballyboo · 15/07/2024 13:46

But he was a criminal. And taking drugs. Not exactly a choir boy.

Oh come on. Many, many young people (most perhaps) try drugs at some point. No need to be all holier than thou. Who knows, maybe even your children will try/have tried drugs.

His mum has apparently used some of it to bring in her own search team from the Netherlands.

In the circumstances, surely no one expects their money back.

Maybe not, but the money has to go somewhere- it's can't be resting in Debbie's account until the year 3000 so best place for it imo is either back in the hands of the donators or a decent charity.

I think the machete attack and the suspicious go fund me is what lost a lot of public sympathy.

Completely different to a tv doctor on holiday with his wife, who then didn’t collect £40k from the public?

I don’t think I’ve ever cared less about someone missing/a body being found.

It's very clear that the reaction is different.

But the essentials are the same. Brit on holiday makes decisions that lead to a fatal incident in hostile terrain.

Probably both will be held to be misadventure (or whatever the parallel term is in those jurisdictions)

aodirjjd · 15/07/2024 13:59

I would call a teenager with a conviction for cracking someone’s head open with a machete morally bankrupt though…

He didn't. He was a background figure who got a lesser sentence than the person who was wielding a machete. Obviously he had unpleasant friends at one point but I get tired of people saying he cracked someones head open with a machete. He didn't.

The Netherlands? They know the terrain better than the Tenerife folk I guess!

Edited

Probably be used to fly the body home then a big hero's funeral

Search for what?

What do you think, honestly? This sadly happens more often than you think and will happen again.

The family know now how horrible it is to have a family member missing and not be found for such a long time. Now they have the means to help future missing people.

FrancisSeaton · 15/07/2024 14:52

@SallyWD most kids don't cave other kids skulls in and steal Rolexes though. He wasn't just a kid who had a dabble with some turbo talc

paywalled · 15/07/2024 14:53

I hope it wasn't a prolonged death. I hope, like MM, he likely became unconcious and wasn't aware of anything. It sounds like the Civil Guard must have been still looking for him, despite the search being officially called off 30 June.

Tumblingjungleofchaos · 15/07/2024 14:55

MaggieFS · 15/07/2024 14:21

It is ok, and within the realms of average brain capacity, to:

  • be appalled by his criminal activities
  • have hoped he was found safe and well
  • think that some of the decisions that led him going missing were, at best, unwise
  • have sympathy for his family, if it is him

It's not civilised to wish other people dead.

Agree with this.

So has it been confirmed all the very many news reports about Jay not being one of the ones who physically attacked the lad are wrong?

And was it confirmed he stole a Rolex? I thought that was one of the conspiracy theories.

I wonder what the family will do with all the go fund money.

Funerals are expensive.

Ah. I thought you meant this search, which appears to be over.

I hope it will make some of the conspiracy theorists think twice in future.

The most obvious answer is usually the answer.

It won’t because conspiracy theorists are some of the thickest, most ignorant people alive.

diddl · 15/07/2024 15:02

he was a kid on his first holiday and had people around him who werent looking out for him generally,

Should someone have gone with him in the car then?

I donate to the London Air Ambulance even though I've never needed an Air ambulance.

justasking111 · 15/07/2024 15:03

Well he's gone now. Let his mum have his body returned for burial. Everything else is irrelevant, he's paid the ultimate price.

I thought it was pretty clear I meant generally, what with me saying "generally" an all.

Also rest of my post - the bit you left off your c&p, makes it clear what I meant - "no wonder he had a bit of a questionable past (as did the lad who was attacked by the gang Jay was with)."

Edited to add the rest of my post that was accidentally not included in the c&p that make it clear I meant, err, generally, even if the word "generally" didn't make that clear.

Ahhh this is sad, he was a kid on his first holiday and had people around him who werent looking out for him generally, no wonder he had a bit of a questionable past (as did the lad who was attacked by the gang Jay was with).

To think they must have been so close if they were looking near where his phones last location was. His poor Dad he seemed like the only genuine one.

It wasn't his first holiday. The family had lots of connections in Tenerife and spent a lot of time there.

A teen on his first holiday doesn't end up in La Masca alone.

Yea tbh I should have said first holiday with friends, my bad.

Erm, brace yourselves. There is no way in hell the conspiracy brigade are going to back down. Within five minutes they'll all be on Tiktok/Instagram/insert vapid social media website of choice claiming his body has been planted there. They are fucking tiresome and relentless.

I've already seen comments along those lines on FB. Absolutely disgusting. A young man has lost his life and people have been making stuff up from the start! He's clearly been under the influence and lost his bearings as everyone who was actually involved said in the beginning, he was a teenager and made a wrong decision as we all did at some point at that age.

At least there is closure, the not knowing would be far worse.
