I thought she looked fabulous, but my question is about her hair and chemo. If she is having chemo wouldn’t she have lost her hair?
I don’t know perhaps not everyone loses their hair with chemo 🤷‍♀️
It didn’t look to me look she was wearing a wig.
I thought she looked very well and was glad to see her out and about.

People can sometimes start to look healthier when undergoing chemotherapy. My dad did. My mum did not lose her hair, nor were there any changes to the texture of it (pancreatic cancer). Kate also has a team of expert stylists.

Oblomov24 · 14/07/2024 23:10

She looked fab. Loved her dress and earrings.

So much ignorance as well as the snide insinuations.
I have had people presume I will look like a skeleton and be bald because I have stage 4 cancer. They also presume stage 4 means you will be dead in months.
In fact cancer treatment made me put on a lot of weight as I needed steroids for side effects. My hair is the same as ever. I did not have a picc line. Five years on from being told my cancer is stage 4 I am still here.
I have had people imply I must be lying. They were lucky I am so disabled and that I wasn’t still on the steroids at the time or I might have smacked their face.
There are some sewers masquerading as human beings about.

That's really interesting you didn't have a PICC line. How were your infusions given?

Steroids are awful, I wasn't able to take them due to adverse reactions so didn't gain weight like many do. Am so sorry you're living with stage 4 cancer. Sending you lots of love and best wishes.

None of your business. Really distasteful.

My dad has been having chemo for years. Never lost any hair, never looked ill, didn't lose any weight. You'd have no idea that he was being treated. Also didn't have a picc line, despite months of 2-weekly cycles.

Another friend had a picc line in her chest (not her arm), so it was very easy to cover up (not that PoW should feel the need to do that if she doesn't want to).

So this is interesting to me inasmuch as when I was having chemo, none of the men who were there had PICC lines (or ports for that matter). Like your father, they were on a 2-weekly cycle. Am rather fascinated by this and how they decide who gets what. I wonder if it's dependent on what chemo drugs are used?

Initially, my friend (who also had breast cancer) had weekly injections, but after her veins started collapsing, she had a PICC line put in.

(Sorry for straying off topic).

Edited to add that now I think of it, my father didn't have a picc or a port when undergoing chemo, but my mother had the former.

Blackcats7 · 14/07/2024 23:15

@doublec through a line on top of my hand put in and taken out each time so every three weeks for about a year in total though gaps in between when hospitalised for side effects.
I could have had a picc line if I preferred but as I didn’t absolutely need it I chose not to have one.

doublec · 14/07/2024 23:20

@Blackcats7 Thank you for clarifying! I don't think I was given a choice, the first I knew I was having a picc was when they sent me downstairs to get one.

Picc lines can cause more trouble than they're worth - they block, they can get infected, and at the very least, you have to go weekly to have it checked and flushed. If I find myself having to have chemo again, I'm not entirely sure if I will consent to one again.

As I have said numerous times in other threads, preventative chemo is still chemo. However, and again, not all chemotherapy drugs cause hair loss.

@Penguinsa Cold cap doesn't always work. Several women I met during my time on the chemo floor all did cold cap religiously and still lost their hair/their hair thinned.

Where did I say preventative chemo wasn't chemo. I'm well aware of that thanks having seen my friend go through several rounds of it

I can only apologise if I misconstrued your words. The reason I bristled was because some in these threads seem to think preventative chemo isn't real chemo. That's all, no offence meant. I wish your friend well.

As an aside, I had preventative chemo and very much lost my hair.

She's the healthiest looking seriously ill person I've seen.

What do you mean?

People say the same for my son all the time. Does not make it true.

loobylou10 · 14/07/2024 23:28

Sorry about that @foothandmouth. @JohnnyAndTheDead really ought to say what they really mean rather than hiding behind their twattish comments - own it if you're gonna to be a dick.

You are a nasty, sad person. I’ve had cancer, had treatment, survived. I looked no different.

planAplanB · 14/07/2024 23:39

I would be mortified if someone started a MN thread about my possible hair loss and if I wore a wig.

You are basically trying to imply Princess Catherine hasn’t had cancer and hasn’t had chemo. I hope all the replies have set you straight. Why some people have to be so vile
is beyond me. Can’t say anything nice then say nothing.

outdamnedspots · 14/07/2024 23:47

Omg, @doublec , all I meant was that Kate would never wear a dress in which any medical intervention would be obvious. Why would she?? Just wear long sleeves.

doublec · 14/07/2024 23:50

@outdamnedspots Oh, I get that. Btw, she wore long sleeves at Trooping the Colour... I wore short sleeves and didn't much care who saw my picc line/scars!

tothelefttotheleft · 14/07/2024 23:53

@outdamnedspots

You'd definitely see a picc line with the short sleeves she was wearing.

@doublec

I looked for it too!

doublec · 14/07/2024 23:55

@tothelefttotheleft You've made me feel so much better that you looked for it too!

Thatcat · 15/07/2024 00:03

Don’t see the point of this thread.
It reads like a conversation to scrutinise the looks of an ill person. It’s not nice.

Remaker · 15/07/2024 00:07

I had chemo for bowel cancer last year and didn’t lose my hair. I also looked very ‘healthy’. I lost quite a lot of weight but I was carrying a bit extra so it got me down to the healthy weight range.

One of the chemo drugs I was on actually makes your skin look amazing. I was glowing lol. People find it very disconcerting when they know you’re seriously ill but you don’t look it. But looks can be deceiving.

Hopefully the experience of the POW will make people realise that cancer treatment isn’t a one size fits all solution. It would be fantastic if nobody ever felt the need to share with you what happened to their Aunty Myrtle when she had chemo for a completely different cancer in 1992. Because it’s really bloody annoying!

circular2478 · 15/07/2024 00:19

I thought she looked great. She looked liked she had a spray tan as she was darker than normal. This probably helped with the glow.

Your comment made me think, as I receive phlebotomies every two months for my blood cancer. I have tiny veins so it can be problematic. The medical technician told me that the older men she treats have “huge, bulgy veins” and locating a good vein is far easier. Perhaps inserting frequent needle sticks are more challenging for a woman’s veins. Just a theory.
