TAAT. Where does the north end?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/07/2024 20:58

Where?

Sheffield? Birmingham? Below the Humber, Lincolnshire?????

I live in Sheffield. I think we are bottom of the North. Nottingham and Derbyshire which touch on us are Midlands.

Manchester is north but is Cheshire?

I’m on the Notts/Derbyshire border and we’re definitely East Midlands. However, I’d say we identify as more like northerners than southerners.

I always wonder with these discussions about places like east anglia - is that north, south or midlands? Of just plain old east? Confused

East anglia is danish

Tell that to Hereward the Wake.

TeenToTwenties · 14/07/2024 11:15

Anything much above Oxford is 'north' to me!

thecatsthecats · 14/07/2024 11:25

Cheshire and Yorkshire are the last northern counties/regions.

Shropshire acres to Lincolnshire is Midlands belt.

Longma · 14/07/2024 11:34

I live in Sheffield and would say that we are from the north of England.
However only just.
I think any further south and it'd be midlands and then into the south.

But Sheffield isn't the midlands, so just on the northern (England) borders.

I remember this ditty from childhood:

North, South, East or West
Grimsby girls are far the best
When you kiss their greasy lips
You can taste the fish and chips

medianewbie · 14/07/2024 12:16

I grew up in Kent. Everything north of the M25 was 't'North' to me (not the most enlightened family of origin)
Attended Uni in Edinburgh (having never been north of the M25).
I stayed, so The North is now Aberdeen. But, in general, I guess The North is Sheffield upwards?

Grin

But pedantically he was fighting the Normans not the Danes. I guess they were slightly Danish.

Tibshelf services on the m1 is a good divider. A good indication of arriving in the North of England is the standard of driving, which deteriorates quickly once one passes into Sheffield and beyond.

I live on the South Coast, we think anything across the Downs is getting a bit Northern but definitely anything past Croydon.

Thornton Heath Bus Garage. That's where The North starts, although it gets a bit dicey by the time you're up to between Broad Green and the Cinatra's site, as it's very clear you're on the London Road and not Brighton Road once you're past Lidl.

DP's opinion is 'probably starts at Princetown/Tavy, but definitely anything from Widdecombe-in-the-Moor onwards'.

When instead of a cockerpoo, its a ferret on the end of the lead?

(One of my neighbours does walk his ferrets on leads.)

TeaAndStrumpets · 14/07/2024 14:32

I believe there is a crumpet/pikelet line to be drawn, too.

Have you been to Birmingham lately?

WithACatLikeTread · 14/07/2024 16:26

If you mean England then I would say the Humber. Anything above that is North of England.

What the f*? Yorkshire is the North.

JaninaDuszejko · 14/07/2024 16:31

For those who are arguing roadsigns may I point out there are signs on the M8 in Glasgow pointing to 'Carlisle and The South'.

Wimp. It's just the breeze off the North Sea. 🙂

We splashed in the beach at Banburgh in August. My feet were frozen. We are used to the Yorkshire coast but that was cold!

You didn’t have to start a new thread! I know the other poster was infuriating but you were right in the first place!

JaninaDuszejko · 14/07/2024 16:41

North Yorkshire feels more southern than the other Yorkshires. Maybe it's just more secure in it's northernness. Whereas the likes of Sheffield is the borderlands and so needs to play up the northern clichés so it can claim it belongs. Or maybe the clichés are what they are because southerns don't venture any further north because they are scared off by the southern northerners. So we can keep the true north uncontaminated and nobdy knows how wonderful North Yorkshire, Co Durham or Northumberland are. Sadly thanks to Wordworth and Beatrix Potter the southerners have discovered the northwest and it's overrun. We don't want that happening here.

Well lots of people enjoyed posting on it.

And some fun discussions on what constitutes north!

Yes!!!! People are crazy!

MadKittenWoman · 14/07/2024 18:00

I'm from Manchester, and I consider Stoke to be the border. Cheshire is definitely north, Derbyshire is more complicated.

MadKittenWoman · 14/07/2024 18:07

I agree. Sheffield is the most southern of Yorkshire, which is all north, but very close to Derbyshire which straddles the borders. Cheshire is north, as is Stockport.

We have definitely had a couple of colder summers- more rain than I recall ever.
