TAAT. Where does the north end?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/07/2024 20:58

Where?

Sheffield? Birmingham? Below the Humber, Lincolnshire?????

I live in Sheffield. I think we are bottom of the North. Nottingham and Derbyshire which touch on us are Midlands.

Manchester is north but is Cheshire?

To the Midlands perhaps- not to the North.

I think it changes around Mansfield. Which is in Notts but near Sheffield.

I don’t think Peterborough is northern at all.

Birmingham isn't in the North. It's in the Midlands - West Midlands specifically.

I moved south as a teenager and find it funny that anyone who thinks anything further than the Watford Gap is 'Oooop North'!

I would consider Newcastle, York and Liverpool to be 'Oooop North'.

Liverpool! Liverpool is nowhere near the North.

The real North starts at the southern boundary of County Durham and that's as far south as it goes.

FunIsland · 13/07/2024 22:18

I agree with others, Sheffield is the most Southernmost ‘north’ and Notts / lincs is midlands. It’s literally called East Midlands

Santasbigredbobblehat · 13/07/2024 22:18

North Lincolnshire is as high up as Manchester and Sheffield so I'd say that's 'in the North'. The rest of it is in the Midlands.

The North starts at Crewe. Stuart Maconie says so, so it must be true.

Also, I'm from Crewe and you can't tell me I'm not a Northerner as that's fighting talk where I come from

Mind you, everything is fighting talk where I come from, as I'm from Crewe.

Crewe is in Cheshire which i'd say is all north.

It's also just north of Stoke-on-Trent which I stated above is demarcation territory between north and Midlands.

Crewe is on the west. In terms of east i'd say Chesterfield would be where the north starts in terms of a decent sized town.

My auntie used to say luke instead of look. She was from Sheffield.

That's not the same as saying oop for up though. No one actually says 'oop' do they? 'Up' with a broad vowel is the same pronunciation as 'put'.

Your auntie's 'luke' is very common in parts of Lancashire. I'm having my doubts about Sheffield nowGrin

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 13/07/2024 22:24

The Shetlands.

"The South" begins in Midlothian.

I think I'd draw a line from the mouth of the Humber (ish). Doncaster-Manchester neck of the woods.

Yep I think the same, at least on the northeast coast anything after Donny/Hull/Humbers is south/southeast

Lincoln is definitely not in the North.

But isn't their BBC regional news Look North?

No.

I get Look North. When the TV is playing up l sometimes get Lincoln Today ( l think it’s called that)

Sometimrs on LN they talk about the northern borders of Lincoln, but they don’t talk about the city.

DH and I have had a discussion, our usual discussion.

Red line is as far south as I am really prepared to concede as North of England. I would stop at Gateshead but he has convinced me that's unreasonable and I do actually consider Durham as the North.

Green line is his very clear view of the southern border of the North of England because he comes from West Yorkshire and is adamant it's the North along with North Yorkshire. He is undecided really about Lancashire but has included Lancashire and the East Riding in the interests of building a straightish wall- if it came to it again.

I do actually think York is in the North but not the same North as Newcastle and Northumberland- it's a softer North down there. I go to Alnwick, Berwick, Keswick, Durham regularly but rarely venture further South and York would be a very rare visit.

I'm really struggling to make Luke and look sound different. Does that mean I'm Northern?

For me, above the line and you're a northerner. I'm from Derbyshire/S Yorkshire border and I most definitely consider myself a northerner.

Talkinpeace · 13/07/2024 22:41

Everything is relative.
London is north for me !!

Yeah I always felt that was a bit of a cheek when I was growing up.
Interlopers trying to get some reflected northernness!

Mind you, when we lived just into North Yorkshire we could only get Look North from Newcastle so proud geordies probably felt the same about us.

spikeandbuffy · 13/07/2024 22:44

I'm in Lancashire and fairly confident I'm in the north (west)
Manchester to me is north but it gets a bit vague below that

TrivialProblem · 13/07/2024 22:45

For surveys/statistics and stuff, Derbyshire is classed as East Midlands.
However, parts of Derbyshire are further north than Sheffield so I still don’t know where north ends

edited to take out weird symbols

Lifeinlists · 13/07/2024 22:46

@IncompleteSenten

That line should go from the Mersey over to the Humber. Sorry.

My north is higher than that.

No.
I will not be accepting accusations that I am not a northerner. Away with you. 😁
