Missed speed awareness course

labsarelife · 13/07/2024 09:46

I missed my speed awareness course by accident. Can I rebook it? Will I have to pay again? Anyone else done this? Thanks.

That's great news, labsarelife. Even if you do have to pay again, you can avoid the points and that's the objective.

Quite honestly, this place is a bear pit sometimes, full of gnarly posters who just want somebody to lash out at - and they found your thread about speeding. Just ignore them, they have issues, that is their problem not yours.

It's human nature to focus on the nastier posts because you don't need to worry about the nice or supportive ones... don't give the spiteful posters any more of your headspace. Imagine what it must be like to be them, shudder to yourself and forget about them.

Thank you so much. Yes, it actually worries me that there are people out there who are so quick to criticise the mistakes of others, even when the person in question has fully admitted their error.
Uncalled for, nasty, judgemental individuals who obviously never put a foot wrong in their own lives. I’d rather be me - forgetful perhaps but honest and fair and I try to be empathetic and understanding of people.
At least there are some of us left eh? 😂

Just read the whole thread, glad you got it sorted, mistakes happen and you didn't deserve some of these shitty responses.

1offnamechange · 15/07/2024 13:08

I can't believe this thread
I came on to say pretty much what they told you when you did get through - they'll just let you rebook
I checked when I did mine because it was online and just wanted to double check what would happen if the Internet went down for some reason

but wow. Sometimes mn can be so helpful and then sometimes you get the absolute dregs
Criticising you for not doing the one thing all the course materials specifically tell you not to do (go in once it's started)
Smuggly informing you it will be a court summons or the fine when they have clearly no knowledge for this and have just made it up

Logically it would make sense they'd just allow you to rebook because THE GOVERNMENT ACTIVELY WANT PEOPLE TO TAKE THE CLASS
that's why they offer it as an option and make it as easy as possible for people to attend...offering both online and in person classes and letting you choose between multiple venues and different police forces.

but even if logic isnt your strong suit...if you don't know something...you can just skip the thread, not jump on to give someone a kicking for something that has caused no actual inconvenience to anyone other than op

None of the posters here have been affected
The tutor still gets paid
The other people in the class weren't distracted by op arriving late, if anything her not attending made the class finish slightly earlier because it was one fewer set of documents to check

You exceeded the speed limit, you didn't commit treason. Its obviously not even by a huge amount, or something you do frequently because otherwise you wouldn't have been offered the course.

I'd rather be the person who misses a COMPLETELY OPTIONAL class than an cowardly online bully, personally...

I phoned up to sort it out. The woman said ‘it’s no problem, I’ll pop you on to another course.’ Didn’t ask me for a payment but that might pop up later, although she didn’t mention having to pay again.
I was apologetic and just told the truth. I could have feigned illness or whatever but I think it’s just best to admit what really happened.
i also asked if I should have turned up late to original course and she said no and that they definitely would not have allowed me in.
Please, if someone asks a direct question on Mumsnet and you have no experience or knowledge of the situation/issue that the poster is requiring info to; do not make up inaccurate and insulting responses to the person posing the question.
90% of the responses I received, were quite frankly rude, mean and passive aggressive and worse still, WRONG.

I had a similar experience, but a couple of steps earlier! I got the letter through, and made a mental note to book the course a couple of weeks later as I was still finalising annual leave arrangements for the year etc.

I then went to book the course but the invitation had expired... I hadn't noticed that it said you had to book the course within X days of receiving the letter (even though I was booking for about 4 months in the future and well within the deadline). Totally my fault for not reading properly.

I rang the number next morning and was honest about my mistake, and the lady just booked me straight onto the course. A big relief.

(May I just apologise to other posters for chiming in pleasantly with a related anecdote, rather than having a massive go at OP for something irrelevant that she can't do anything about. I'll try harder in future.)

Glad you managed to sort it out too. Good to know there are other people out there like me 😂 and I mean that in the kindest way possible!

You are kind of right, OP, but also it was your choice to invite a load of randoms on the internet to speculate, rather than googling or phoning the people who could actually give you the correct answer for your specific circumstances.

LlynTegid · 15/07/2024 18:14

OP, thank you for coming back and letting everyone know. Too many people start a thread and don't, it will I am sure be appreciated by anyone else who ends up in a similar situation.

I am surprised the course is offered on a Saturday incidentally.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 15/07/2024 18:20

Yes and those of us who aren't stupid and lacking could see that OP was worried and needed a bit of reassurance so gave it. What did that cost? It was the weekend, there was nobody the OP could ring.

Anyway, some posters just couldn't help themselves and rushed in to give OP a kicking because they're pathetic and that's all they could manage.

OP has her answer now so no need for randoms to invest any more of their precious time.

Phone lines were Mon - Fri only and my course was on a Saturday. Google did not give any specific info and what I did find was contradictory, which is why I started a thread.
I was specifically asking what happens if you miss a course. I’d have expected people who know the answer, to answer but no, all and sundry hopped on with their theories and admonishments.
Hopefully others will now accurately be able to find out, actually what happens when you miss one thanks to my thread. Also, I don’t have to pay again. I think they about sums this whole thing up. Goodbye Mumsnet …. Never again 😂

Sorry for my earlier comment. I had only read part of the page, which seemed a bit scaremongering... !

thecatsthecats · 15/07/2024 22:16

That would have been yet another misdemeanour, when specifically requested not to and could have been another stroke against me. I could have been had for time wasting and causing an interruption to the training session itself.

OP, you remind me of a very anxious woman I met on my own speed awareness course. She was so mortified at having sped that she kept apologising for hours and guessing speed limit questions as 20 or 30mph even when she'd been shown a picture of a motorway.

I think there's something else for you to learn here:

Turning up, being bright, professional and polite will not get you "told off". Honestly. Golf hotel staff are not going to feel harassed by being asked a question. Course managers aren't police officers ready to add a caution to your DBS for politely knocking on the door and asking if you can enter.

You don't need to scurry around deferentially.

And if the golf course is the Tewkesbury Hilton, I recommend booking yourself in for a spa afternoon and afternoon tea post-course.

I am a completely competent, self assured person and I run my own successful business, previously having been a teacher for years. I don’t need your patronising advice about my confidence or needing to take a spa day.
I’ve clearly explained why I didn’t want to turn up late. The ‘two misdemeanours’ reference was tongue in cheek but I think that bypassed you somehow.
I CHOSE to not turn up late, so as not to disturb the course which had perhaps already started. That is called having manners.
Honestly, what you managed to summise from this thread, is so wildly inaccurate it proves everything I need to know about a large majority of Mumsnet users.
It was not the Tewkesbury Hilton either, Clueso.

I think that thecatsthecats's post was supportive of you, OP, I had to re-read it to see why you seemed so annoyed at it? I still can't see it.

thecatsthecats, If I'm ever in Tewskesbury, I may call into the Hilton for that afternoon tea...

It does vary from area to area, as I mentioned previously. (I work in that sector, and so I provided a factual response for where I reside/work)

I'm glad where you are, realises that humans make mistakes, and it often isn't deliberate or wilful, I often sit at work and think those who err slightly are punished too harshly!

I'm glad you got sorted!

I agree with the op that it read as incredibly patronising, so I suppose it's up to interpretation.

Also, not particularly helpful as "Turning up, being bright, professional and polite" might not get you "told off" but it also wouldn't end up in you being allowed into the class if you were late, as they make very clear on the course information. Regardless of how 'Professional' you seem, you have to be there on time (actually a bit earlier to allow everyone's ID to be checked). So if OP knew she wouldn't be allowed in, it would be ruder to turn up and waste everyone's time trying it, than inconveniencing herself by rebooking.
