Well I don't suppose there was much integrity left to lose.

HannibalHeyes · 25/07/2024 00:15

They got rid of all the moderates because of Brexit. All they have left are headbanging idiots...

L1ttledrummergirl · 25/07/2024 00:16

Tugendhat lost my vote when he became one of Sunaks toadies.

With any luck, the Tories will get a decade in opposition to sort out their psychodrama and come back with someone electable. The whole point of democracy is that we change leaders regularly and if they are not ready, perhaps the Lib Dems will grow a bit more. Either way, I'm more interested in the new Government than the remnants of the old.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/07/2024 08:56

At this rate I can see Sunak defecting ! He actually sounds the only sane one in them - and that's going some

Ha yes! He actually sounds reasonable since the election. I have to keep reminding myself of his history.

I'm on holiday at the moment so not catching everything but managed to watch PMQ's this morning and was pleasantly surprised by how, well, respectful it was. It seems Rory Stewart was right (at least I think it was him) when he said that Sunak would make a much better Leader Of The Opposition.

Notonthestairs · 25/07/2024 10:30

I am not going to link to it on the grounds its hopelessly partisan drivel. But the Times has an "analysis" of all the ways that the Labour party have trashed the "inheritance" left to them by the Conservatives. Yes, really.

It includes the criticism that Labour will process the 100,000 asylum applicants that are currently in limbo as a direct result of Conservative legislation. Behind this is the facile notion that they would have been sent to Rwanda by the Conservatives - no mention of the fact that Rwanda was never able to take more than a few hundred at most. So at some point somebody was going to have to process applications - or keep them in limbo (at cost) in the UK.

I appreciate that the summer holidays brings out all the trash but its some of the worst 'reporting' I've seen in it.

It's only value is to indicate that a) the Conservatives have no intention of learning anything from the last few years and b) Murdoch and Tony Gallagher hope to reinvent Conservative policies as practical & workable despite all evidence and experience to the contrary.

The comments section is withering.

Quite invigoriating to listen to.

Analysis shows that come 2029, 6% of people who voted Tory 3 weeks ago will be gone forever. Absolutely nothing will ever get their votes back.

And because they have effectively fucked over the generation feeding into the electoral demographic so badly, there is no replacement.

Try winning an election with those sorts of maths.

Even a 1:1 replacement from Reform voters still won't win no election.

They are in deep deep do-do. They're basically gaslighting themselves at this point.

Notonthestairs · 25/07/2024 11:17

Ha. Yes, that is cheering.

My lingering concern revolves around the cheapening of journalism. It was the best way to hold authority to account (be that Labour or Conservative).

I don't want to gain all my news from podcasts or Twitter because the vast majority of it is opinion based. Interesting but not necessarily broad enough to provide a decent factual overview.

Fully appreciate news coverage has always been at the whims and interests of media owners. I spent time studying parts of the UK press during the late 1930s.

But it seems to be worsening. Just my view.

newnamethanks · 25/07/2024 11:36

Couldn't agree more. Opinion isn't fact. Unless you're Trump of course but far too much opinion masquerading as fact. And while I'm whinging, I was exasperated on Tuesday when the BBC 6pm news led with Strictly Come Dancing story and statement by DG and yet further irritated by C4news opening with a 25 minute interview with Amanda Abbington same subject. I understand she had an awful time, somebody treated her badly, social media, all women, etc. I'm sorry it happened to her. BUT NEWS! Ffs. Nightmare world events unfolding and that's topping the news. Celebrification and celebrity opinion. Pissed me off. A lot.

newnamethanks · 25/07/2024 11:38

Oh bugger. C4 was last night, not night before.

BIossomtoes · 25/07/2024 11:40

Given the age of most Tory voters, I’m surprised the attrition rate is as low as 6%. That’s very heartening news Serendipity.

Zonder · 25/07/2024 11:48

I see Robert Jenrick has joined Cleverly and Tugendhat in the Tory leadership bid. All the great and good of the Tory party eh?

The worse the better. I look forward to watching them completely implode.

Notonthestairs · 25/07/2024 11:58

Kruger is running Jenrick's campaign which tells you all you need to know.

I do vaguely recall reading a story where Mordaunt et al were demanding a bigger say in the contest ....
