Surely the more he says MPs are going to defect, the harder it becomes for someone to defect.

😂Indeed😂

🍿

New Tory leadership timetable for four month contest discussed by 1922 committee today

  • nominations would open on Weds with threshold of ten MPs needed to reach first round of voting
  • candidates spend August campaigning with knock-out votes on Sept 4, 9, 10 and 11 until just four left final four
  • candidates take part in ‘beauty parade’ at party conference - whittled down to two on Oct 2
  • ballots sent out to Tory members across the country with final result on Nov 2

I make that about two lettuces in time, assuming 50 days to be the measurement of the life of one.

I'm a bit sick of the US election news already. It seems like nothing is happening in the UK anymore.

I know it all has a big impact on the world but hopefully it will die down a bit now.

I'm quite enjoying it. It makes a change. It will die down and then ramp up nearer the convention. There is a rumour that Trump is going to dump Vance.

newnamethanks · 23/07/2024 07:31

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see DT elbow Vance, he's an obvious threat to him.

Zonder · 23/07/2024 07:44

I think I would be enjoying it more if it has nothing to do with Trump. Does Harris have any chance of getting rid of him? I just read that Musk is giving 45 million a month to the Trump campaign.

Yes especially on a thread about Starmer & Labour.....

Little concerning about relaxation of planning rules ref environmental issues in areas near rivers

We need tighter rules on infrastructure/environment on housing, not less & short term and tenants rights addressing.

Notonthestairs · 23/07/2024 08:04

An assassination attempt and a US President withdrawing from re-election is always going to make news.

Can you link to the environmental/planning changes Alexandra? I'd like to read about them. Thanks.

Notonthestairs · 23/07/2024 08:25

I read somewhere that Labour wanted to develop positive male role models to directly address Tate and pals misogyny. But I've seen nothing about how this would be implemented.

Social media remains the Wild West - I don't think it's in enough (rich) men's interests to police it.

Notonthestairs · 23/07/2024 08:30

Remembered the article -

www.newstatesman.com/comment/2024/03/labours-feminist-andrew-tate-will-not-stop-online-misogyny

It's not a ringing endorsement of the plan.

Crikeyalmighty · 23/07/2024 08:33

@absquatulize I would bring in a rule that if anyone defects(from any party) there is a bi election

Piggywaspushed · 23/07/2024 08:42

I'd also argue that having world leaders like Trump and Johnson and Farage drives misogyny. Gladly, Johnson is long gone. Sadly, Trump may be back. And Farage is extraordinarily popular with young lads.

The fact that these men seem to think they can say and do what they want emboldens young men- who can't see the ironies.

I think long gone are the days when wholesome sportsmen or edgy political music stars inspire young men. Gareth Southgate and Ed Sheeran are just a bit bland.

Piggywaspushed · 23/07/2024 08:43

And don't get me started on Elon Musk...

Notonthestairs · 23/07/2024 08:47

Yeah, it's certainly not a coincidence that Musk is donating vast sums to Trump. They share an outlook.

And yet Prevent training still is dominated by terrorist grooming, specifically geared towards Muslims

Does that perhaps depend on the training provider? The last Prevent training I did gave equal time to malign misogynists like Tate and was noticeably different in content to the previous training. It was delivered in person, rather than those tedious online scenarios you have to plough through and very much tailored towards primary aged children (although it did give an overview of older children, young people and adults). We bought it in from County iirc. Be interesting to see the focus when we do it again in Autumn.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/jul/22/neil-kinnock-tells-labour-mps-tide-is-shifting-towards-closer-ties-with-europe

NEW: Neil Kinnock delivered rallying cry to pro-EU Labour MPs, telling them “tide is turning” on forging closer ties ⁦

(Labour Movement for Europe group now has more than 100 MPs - vastly outnumbering Tories’ eurosceptic ERG).

And yet Labour opposed joining the EEC ...

Could you send me the link to the training or DM me? Much appreciated.

Piggywaspushed · 23/07/2024 10:06

I asked about misogyny at the last in person training I remember having (led by our DSL) and was pretty much brushed off. I also asked about stuff like EDL with same response.

She was lovely but it was clear her training materials emphasised Islam. Interesting in a school with 6 Muslim pupils in total...

There was something in the national press about the inherent bias of Prevent training not that long ago. Will see if I can find it.

Piggywaspushed · 23/07/2024 10:08

Ours was done when we had to have the hilarious add on that socialism is bad.

The source f this is Byline Times so perhaps not neutral

Voting to join was the first time I was ever eligible to vote and I’m 71 next month!

BestIsWest · 23/07/2024 10:20

Funnily enough DH said the same and he voted against! He became an ardent remainer though.
