I've just seen Biden introduce president Zelensky as President Putin....its just beyond sad now, surely this has to be a big sway to stepping down?

There's no way Starmer could have said anything else about Biden. I'd rather he lie than destabilise the Western World.

That said I think Biden is mentally competent but he's just old and the perception of him has rapidly shifted to a point of no return.

He probably is telling the truth. Biden is very good most of the time. You can’t say someone is cognitively impaired when 95% of the time they aren’t, without doing a neuropsychological or physical assessment of them. It’s a very nuanced thing. So I don’t see what else he could have said.

I do think Biden should step down though. He’s going to win it for Trump and he does need to retire.

The thing is, Biden IS cognitively sound and most of the tine he talks very well - it just doesn’t make headlines. He is actually a very good politician and has achieved huge amounts. But, he IS old, he gets fatigued and his cognitive function then declines.

His main difficulty seems to be name finding. It’s not the worst thing to struggle with BUT it’s enough to mean that he really shouldn’t be in charge of the most powerful country in the world. It’s a younger persons job really. I don’t know why on earth he stood again. I’m angry with him for his lack of insight.

Tbf it’s more his team than him. Insight into his own condition isn’t as easy as other people ignoring it for so long

I recall posts on here where Biden supporters would lash out if anyone suggested decline. People didn’t want to see it

Agreed, and he needs to do it quickly because all of this is detracting from how awful Trump is.

I might have been willing to agree with that - albeit a bit sceptically - until about the last six months. George W Bush had trouble with names and pronunciation (“nucular weapons”). The best British example of a name mangler was John Prescott. Neither were thought to have dementia or senility.

But Biden’s inability to follow a line of argument and to reason coherently is plain to see. The debate fiasco was the end.

user1984778379202 · 12/07/2024 07:56

He has to go and his family need to stop enabling this madness. I don’t know if it qualifies as elder abuse when it’s Biden himself refusing to step aside, but his wife and children aren’t helping. Instead, they are opening the door wide to a Trump win.

Starseeking · 12/07/2024 08:00

66m people voted for Hillary Clinton compared to Trump's 63m, and she still lost due to the way the electoral college works int he US.

66m American people are not going to vote for either Kamala Harris or Michelle Obama, and I hope neither of them puts themselves forward for the embarrassment plus what going through that process would do to their mental health.

The Democrats need to find someone credible, likeable and votable who has a high profile to replace Biden, though at this stage it's probably too late, and we should resign ourselves to seeing a second Trump term. What a world we live in.

Then I stand by what I said, it was a source, and the eye roll was relevant as Starmer shouldn’t have suggested he was cognitively sound which he did, and Biden isn’t.

I also maintain your comment was fucking rude and unnecessary, I bet you’re a really pleasant person out in the real world.

What’s being said on R4?

caringcarer · 12/07/2024 08:10

Biden also said Trump was his deputy. He can't be allowed to stand. Surely the Democrats can find another contender they can rally around.

Bing123 · 12/07/2024 00:36

im sure I read a news report earlier that KS met with Biden earlier and thinks he’s fine cognitively

What does that say about KS judgement? It's scary.

FinalCeleryScheme · 12/07/2024 08:08

What’s being said on R4?

They had a UK reporter question to KS at NATO event, saying a fair few questions covered Biden’s cognitive decline

It says he has good judgement.

IClaudine · 12/07/2024 08:31

Has any other world leader at NATO suggested Biden steps down @caringcarer?

What does that say about KS judgement? It's scary.

To be fair to Keir Starmer, he can only judge based on what he's seen. If in a one to one meeting with him, he felt that Biden was coherent and switched on, that's his experience. He's a lawyer, not a doctor or neurologist.

palomatoast · 12/07/2024 08:33

What does that say about KS judgement?

You can't really have a day old prime minister casting aspersions about the senility of the American president so he didn't have much choice there.

Also I think many of us have been around old people who can chat away coherently for hours and then randomly say something that makes you realise they're really not following at all.

Ultimately I think what's happening with Biden is totally wrong. There should never be question marks about the senility of a sitting president and that includes Trump. They have the nuclear codes for goodness sakes'.

BeardofHagrid · 12/07/2024 08:34

The media are being so cruel, it’s just awful. It’s really upsetting me. Someone on the radio said he was “incoherent”. What a cruel way to describe someone with an illness out of their control.

If George Clooney put himself up for election they’d vote for him. Likewise if Arnold Schwarzenegger could put himself up for the republicans Trump would be history

Exactly. All the leaders at NATO are not mentioning it either, for obvious reasons.

If he has an illness then his family and the ppl around him should not be encouraging him to continue

Such a stupid comment from someone who evidently wants to find fault.

It's abundantly clear to anyone with even half a brain that KS couldn't have said anything negative about Biden without causing a significant diplomatic incident.

He tried his very best to make inconclusive comments about the president being on good form during their meeting but the media kept backing him into a corner and pushing him to say more. Pretty much every other European leader has made similar supportive comments about Biden because they all recognise that they can't really do otherwise - and nobody reads much into the comments as they all recognise that too.

They’ve had years to find someone with the threat of Trump looming and they haven’t. It’s unbelievable

Arnie has never been eligible as he’s not a natural born citizen of the USA. Besides, he’s in his seventies himself, let’s at least try and find someone who isn’t of retirement age.

Tracker1234 · 12/07/2024 08:50

The problem with dementia or whatever he has is that he doesnt think like we do. Yes, he mispoke but he will forget about this and I get the impression that he thinks if not him against Trump then who?? He really feels he is the only one to defeat Trump.

I also think his family especially his wife are loving the First Lady position. He clearly listens to Jill but she is past caring and she might even had a word with him but apparently she now blames the people who are putting him in a situation where he makes a gaffe. Its disgraceful behaviour and he seems to have a ego a mile high.

Having said that despite the terrible state of his health its still very close in the polls but realistically he cannot last 4 months let alone 4 YEARS!

If you read my post I used the word COULD, I understand he is ineligible, that’s why I wrote ‘if he could’ 🙄 my point being that celebrity etc is often treated as more important than diplomacy and experience etc.
