Feed so angry with myself. May have been caught speeding. Stupid reason

I never speed - accidentally maybe, but come down straight away.

On a dual carriageway (70mph) never driven there before - 50mph bit for the top of a hill. Went over the top at 50 and let the car speed up. The car behind was very close and I made the decision that breaking to keep at 50 might have been more dangerous. The car overtook and I slowed down, but realise pd I had picked up speed quickly to over 60 (due to the hill and hence the 50 limit). Slowed down to 50, then saw the van.

I'm just so angry with myself. I let myself pick up speed due to the driver behind when I should have stayed slower. I spent the whole journey up to this pulling over every few miles to let drivers past who didn’t want to stick to the speed limit.

No excuses. Just want to get it out. I hope I was far enough away that it didn’t count, but it was a big, wide dual carriageway with lots of visibility.

Sorry, I don’t understand, why were you “pulling over every few miles to let drivers past”, you should be in the left hand lane unless overtaking. So you shouldn’t be moving left when cars arrive…you should be left anyway, then ONLY moving right if you need to overtake.

if you‘re sitting in the right hand lane, you need to be overtaking. If you’re in the right hand lane and driving faster and faster because someone is behind you…that’s wrong.

you sound quite inexperienced, so I think this should be a lesson to analyse how you could be safer in the car. “Not speeding” is not the only way to be safe.

soupfiend · 08/07/2024 19:33

Such hand wringing!!!

And yes, stay left unless overtaking

Edited

Single track country lanes. 60mph speed limit. Lots of bends and hills (corners limiting to 20mph at one point because they were so sharp). After about an hour of this type of driving, the dual carriageway started. I'm referring to pulling over (safely) on the first bit, not the dual carriageway. (Whitby to York if anyone knows it).

Your post makes it sound like you really don't understand the rules of the road. And claiming that you needed to speed due to the car behind you is frankly nonsense. Keep to the speed limit and allow them to overtake if they wish to. If they get too close to the back of your car and hit you then that's fully on them.

SoStupidFeelingSad · 08/07/2024 19:37

I'm annoyed with myself and want to vent. If I hadn't allowed myself to speed up a little, I would have been the driver doing 20mph less than everyone else - they were bunching behind me, so when I topped the hill, I took my foot off the accelerator and let the car roll faster rather than keep breaking. It sped up quickly and I slowed down, but there was a van there (I wondered why the cars ahead were suddenly breaking)

Well this makes more sense

And yes as others have said dont be intimidated by other drivers behind you, I slow right down to be honest with people like that.

At your speed awareness course if you go on one they will tell you that not to drive reactively to others. I know because I went on one and just about to go on another! Not because I was responding to other drivers however, just driving too fast, everyone does sometimes. Nothing to start a thread about

SoStupidFeelingSad · 08/07/2024 19:39

I’m angry with myself because I don’t normally drive according to others. On this occasion, I chose to (I didn’t drive faster, but didn’t break to keep slower IYSWIM). I’m annoyed because this is the one time there was a van!

Oh well. Its no biggie to be honest.

Although you have to pay for the courses, so there is that.

soupfiend · 08/07/2024 19:41

Anyway how would you be doing 20mph less than everyone else if they were stuck behind you!!!

They would be doing the same speed as you!

sentfrmmyiphone · 08/07/2024 19:46

Oh dear well hopefully this is your first offence as you're so triggered by it! It's going to be a long 14 days until that letter drops on the mat!

Speed awareness course and you're done!

Because he came up fast! Because I was already doing 50 and he clearly wasn’t! The outside lane was full of people going faster. As soon as he got a space, he overtook. I was cresting the hill as he caught up and as the car sped up due to the hill, I didn’t break. It happened very quickly. The hill was steep and when he overtook, I slowed down, but had already picked up a lot of speed. I saw others breaking and the speed van.

It all happened quickly and I'm annoyed because I made a decision different to one I normally would and may have been caught out.

One of the things I learned on my speed awareness course (37 in a 30 zone if you’re asking) is that the answer to someone driving up your arse because they want you to go faster is not to speed up, but if anything to slow down to make sure you maintain a safe distance between you and the car in front. If you speed up then the car behind will too and you’ll also have reduced the gap between you and the car in front increasing the danger.

sentfrmmyiphone · 08/07/2024 19:48

So you were going over the tops near filingdales?

Towards Whitby or towards Pickering?

SmokeBlackCat · 08/07/2024 19:49

If you saw a van you don’t know you were definitely caught though? Although I don’t think I’ve ever seen a speed van in my life so my experience is limited. I was caught by a camera, it was a fair cop, etc etc.

sentfrmmyiphone · 08/07/2024 19:51

Knowing that route very well and your description... can I suggest you hand your keys and license Iin!

It's not a narrow road but it is steep in places but visibility is good for miles...

Oh I thought you meant on the single track road bit

If you're in the left hand lane on the dual carriageway bit, then it doesnt matter if you're doing slower than everyone else, they're overtaking anyway

Correct

My first one was also 37 in a 30 zone (I thought it had changed to 40 but it was slightly further on that it changes to 40)

Current one is 57 in a 50 zone. No excuses, I had just put my foot down and was in a hurry.

A64 towards York - I think (roughly) after Kirkham Abbey before Barton Hill looking at Google maps.

I can confirm on that route there will have been a safety camera van! If it's any consolation you can do up to 34 in a 30, 45 in a 40, 56 in a 50 and 67 in a 60.

It's 10% plus 1

sentfrmmyiphone · 08/07/2024 19:56

@SoStupidFeelingSad so you were going down whitwell hill...

Yep there will have been a van!

That’s what I say. But not what everyone else says when they spout the whole 'driving too slowly is as dangerous as driving too quickly).

I’m not here to make excuses. I let the car speed up in a 50 zone (for reasons stated) and due to the hill, it picked up speed very quickly. I slowed down. Maybe not soon enough for the van. I’m not saying I didn’t speed. I’m annoyed because I never speed, made a bad judgement and the one time I did, I may have got caught out.

Can I ask OP, are you really this worried and pissed off about it?

Im just wondering why?

Its a minor irritant and inconvenience at most surely, stumping up the cash and taking a day off work to attend?

sentfrmmyiphone · 08/07/2024 20:00

@SoStupidFeelingSad the hill is dual carriageway... it's the national speed limit... how fast do you think k you were going

sentfrmmyiphone · 08/07/2024 20:01

And my last question? How long have you had a license?
