Feed so angry with myself. May have been caught speeding. Stupid reason

I never speed - accidentally maybe, but come down straight away.

On a dual carriageway (70mph) never driven there before - 50mph bit for the top of a hill. Went over the top at 50 and let the car speed up. The car behind was very close and I made the decision that breaking to keep at 50 might have been more dangerous. The car overtook and I slowed down, but realise pd I had picked up speed quickly to over 60 (due to the hill and hence the 50 limit). Slowed down to 50, then saw the van.

I'm just so angry with myself. I let myself pick up speed due to the driver behind when I should have stayed slower. I spent the whole journey up to this pulling over every few miles to let drivers past who didn’t want to stick to the speed limit.

No excuses. Just want to get it out. I hope I was far enough away that it didn’t count, but it was a big, wide dual carriageway with lots of visibility.

I absolutely hate tailgaters & I find it really hard to resist the pressure to speed up. That’s actually what lead to me doing a speed awareness course in the first place! Plus living in London where most areas are 20mph & there are cameras everywhere.
It was annoying to get caught but as others have said the speed awareness course was really valuable. When someone is right up my rear I now think ‘I’m not getting a speeding ticket just for you!’ To be honest OP you may not have been caught on camera & if you were just put it down to experience- you’ve had a clean slate for 26 years!

@Peoneve

Interesting... how old is that document? I thought the rules had changed and now it's 10% plus 1 and not 2?

This has always been a myth as far as I know

Yep. Someone questioned the 10% etc rule on our course and the instructor said it was a myth.

Sage advice.

A lapse of judgement and not this stress.

@SoStupidFeelingSad the hill is dual carriageway... it's the national speed limit... how fast do you think k you were going

I think ops probably referring to the section between the malton bypass and the next section of dual carriageway just before whitwell hill. It's now a 50 zone for that whole stretch whereas it used to be a 60 (national speed limit) . No idea when it changed but I use Google maps sat nav and it still displays as 60 so I suspect it's catching lot of people out.

Don't know- I googled it
North Yorkshire used to be the place that you were least likely to be caught very few fixed cameras but they also didnt use speed awareness courses very much

Percivaleverett · 08/07/2024 21:18

I meant to say OP don’t be too hard on yourself & be very proud of your driving record. My dad was actually the same until recently but he got a speeding ticket in my London borough 🙈😂.

spikeandbuffy · 08/07/2024 21:18

I slow down for tailgaters and usually just ignore them but last week had one that was so close it was dangerous. Even when I slowed he got closer to me so when I found a safe spot I pulled over as if I was stopping

Saw him sat on the backside of the car in front of me then
Just CBA with him and thought better off he's in front of me

Bournetilly · 08/07/2024 21:20

There’s nothing you can do about it now. You might not have been caught but you can only wait and see. At least you know not to do it again and you can do the speed awareness course so won’t get points on your licence.

Thedayb4youcame · 08/07/2024 21:23

Seriously, I don't know why you are giving this any head room, let alone a post on the internet.

Fact is, no matter what you say, how you word it, and how you justify it, you will either have been caught speeding or not caught speeding.

There is nothing and no one who can make you feel any better, you've just got to try and forget it.

I am getting the impression you've never been caught speeding before. Neither have I. I too have been past vans and cameras and thought I was going too fast. You just have to forget about it and be mindful of the future.

There's a 50% chance you were not caught, and a 100% chance that worrying about it will make absolutely no difference.

I get rattled if I think I might have been made an error and sped through a police trap too (I don't speed often or to huge excess and have never been done in 40 years of driving). But there is nothing you can do now, and it really isn't the end of the world if you have. But I'd want to vent a bit too, I'd be so annoyed with myself.

Thank you to the supportive replies.

I just wanted to vent. I’m not denying what happened. I’m just annoyed than in the decision I made I went against my normal judgement and did what I wouldn’t normally do.

I suppose it’s a wake up call and a good reminder.

What did happen? You may have possibly gone a bit over the speed limit for a very short time. Why are you even still thinking about this, letting alone thinking about it enough to make a whole thread about it. It's a non-event.

CallThatCloudy · 08/07/2024 21:46

"10% + 1" is total bollocks and I wish people would stop repeating this nonsense*. It is a guideline which may or may not be used by used by a police force. The speed limit is the legal limit and drivers can, and have, been prosecuted for driving at 31 in a 30. Yes, unusual, yes, probably because of other offences, but possible nonetheless.

*And not even correct. The guideline is 10% + 2. Watch this: r if you are interested!

It shouldn't be that hard to understand that it would bother some people more than it would you. It has upset the OP and she wanted to talk about it, that's good enough reason to start a thread.
