Feed so angry with myself. May have been caught speeding. Stupid reason

I never speed - accidentally maybe, but come down straight away.

On a dual carriageway (70mph) never driven there before - 50mph bit for the top of a hill. Went over the top at 50 and let the car speed up. The car behind was very close and I made the decision that breaking to keep at 50 might have been more dangerous. The car overtook and I slowed down, but realise pd I had picked up speed quickly to over 60 (due to the hill and hence the 50 limit). Slowed down to 50, then saw the van.

I'm just so angry with myself. I let myself pick up speed due to the driver behind when I should have stayed slower. I spent the whole journey up to this pulling over every few miles to let drivers past who didn’t want to stick to the speed limit.

No excuses. Just want to get it out. I hope I was far enough away that it didn’t count, but it was a big, wide dual carriageway with lots of visibility.

@SoStupidFeelingSad the hill is dual carriageway... it's the national speed limit... how fast do you think k you were going

50mph limit for the steep hill after the crest

And my last question? How long have you had a license?

Why? 26 years and have never had a fine, or speeding ticket etc. I am annoyed with myself.

How do you know you were doing the speed limit? Speedometers are allowed to over read by as much as 10% so you may have only been doing 64 mph. Keep left unless you are overtaking.

sentfrmmyiphone · 08/07/2024 20:07

Well fingers crossed... but I suspect if you were doing the same speed as all the cars in front of you, then you will be fine!

Did you notice lots of cars coming the other way flashing their lights at you? Usually letting you know the van is there

If I was doing the speed limit I wouldn't be pulling over to let people passed...

That's ridiculous

Well who knows, but if you have a queue of traffic behind you, then you find a safe place to pull over and let them past.

Is your speedometer 100% accurate?

SoStupidFeelingSad · 08/07/2024 20:10

I don’t know - it’s a hire car. Staying near Whitby and fancied some time in York.

sentfrmmyiphone · 08/07/2024 20:12

@missshilling dunno... and neither is that of the safety camera van that's why you're allowed 10% plus 1!

I know that road... it's perfectly safe to drive at the speed limit..

mybeesarealive · 08/07/2024 20:13

Your overreacting. I got caught speeding a few weeks ago. First time in 20 years. Doing a speed awareness course. No big deal.

Must have taken you hours to get to York!

LaughingElderberry · 08/07/2024 20:16

Try not to worry about it. There's nothing you can do now. You'll find out in 14 days. If you were clocked over the limit, you're likely to be offered a speed awareness course. They are useful.

No why? Why are you being unpleasant?

I made a mistake and wanted to vent.

"Well who knows, but if you have a queue of traffic behind you, then you find a safe place to pull over and let them past."

No, you really don't.

You continue driving safely at the speed limit and don't give a toss about the queue behind you. If they want to go past you, that's on them.

sentfrmmyiphone · 08/07/2024 20:19

@spicysamosahotcupoftea I'm not being unpleasant..

I know that road.. if you were stopping every few miles to let people pass... the journey will have taken you hours!

It's a statement of fact

TheYearOfSmallThings · 08/07/2024 20:19

I've done the same thing OP, although I've never been caught (for that. I have done a speed awareness course for actual speeding).

I think sometimes the drivers of heavy vehicles amuse themselves by gaining speed on a downhill to see if they can "push" the car in front. It is not pleasant to have a bigger heavier vehicle looming over you as you maintain your correct speed, but that is what we have to do.

Well seeing as it didn't, your imagination of my driving is not the reality.

I got a speed awareness course for doing 34 in a 30 mph. Unless you have a digital speedometer, it's easy to creep over 30.

Oh dear well hopefully this is your first offence as you're so triggered by it! It's going to be a long 14 days until that letter drops on the mat!

Speed awareness course and you're done!

Its North Yorkshire
They are not big on speed awareness courses as a rule and have the legal minimum in place- and lots of use of the word may.

sentfrmmyiphone · 08/07/2024 20:41

@Peoneve

Interesting... how old is that document? I thought the rules had changed and now it's 10% plus 1 and not 2?

Legogirl48 · 08/07/2024 20:45

No big deal. It was a mistake. I got caught going down a hill so the car naturally sped up and went over the limit. Speed awareness course on zoom was actually very interesting…and worked! I have stuck to the speed limit ever since.

DappledThings · 08/07/2024 20:55

It sounds like you don't even know if you were speeding or not let alone if you were going enough over the limit to get a fine. Not worth giving it any headspace.

SkintSingleMama · 08/07/2024 20:58

Well you've either been caught, or you haven't, nothing you can do about it now.
Be more careful in future!!
