What's the point of bloody sex scenes? Is there a single film that's genuinely needed one?

They're everywhere. I'm just waiting for the next bloody Harry Potter film to be Harry Potter And The Beast With Two Backs.

What's the point of them? I've never watched a film in my life where I've gone ahh, well, i was a bit confused but now i saw that bit of sweaty nudity and theatrical groaning I totally get the characters and the plot.

It's ridiculous. I'm watching a film and all of a sudden I've got two naked professional fakers writhing around on screen for no discernable reason.

This is in chat not aibu because I'm not. I bet none of you can name a film that badly needed us to see the characters fucking.

Porn films are obviously excluded. I accept that without the sex, we simply won't understand why the pizza delivery guy was happy not getting £18.95 for the cheese crust large ham and pineapple.

I was going to make a joke about stuffed crust but I'm a better person than that.

I like a good sex scene. Bridgerton would have been boring without them. Although I do agree that directors like to shoe horn them in for no apparent reason such as Florence Pugh in Oppenheimer as a pp said.

I don't enjoy porn, but a well done sex scene will definitely turn me on. That's the point of them I suppose?

EBearhug · 08/07/2024 19:08

You can say that about things like violence in films as well.

You definitely can. I avoid Tarantino movies for this reason.

crumblingschools · 08/07/2024 19:09

I think Bridgerton would have been fine without most of the sex scenes

DysonSphere · 08/07/2024 19:09

No I hate them! I often fast forward if I can.
They serve as absolutely nothing but cheap filler and puts many actresses in particular in a difficult position to refuse them. Film is still a male dominated occupation as regards producers and directors, and I frankly am sometimes🤨🤨 at the motives of the director sometimes. We know that some actresses are/have been expected to give sexual favours to secure roles, it wouldn't surprise me if some sex scenes are pure liberties. If actors/actresses refuse to shoot a scene, they might be seen as difficult in the industry.

I found Bridgerton insufferable for the reason of the over the top and frankly unrealistic and ridiculous sex scenes. Both series could have been several episodes shorter if they had cut them down.

Shitandrun · 08/07/2024 19:09

Saltburn is a good example of sex scenes adding something vital to the story!

C1N1C · 08/07/2024 19:10

It was part of the story in Human Centipede!

Is this the old film with Donald Sutherland? Looks creepy!!

It is very creepy- one of the scariest films. So well done though. The sex scene really matters in relation to the couple’s grief.

The third series seems even more explicit. I'm glad I didn't watch it with my mum.

I don't remember a sex scene in Human Centipede? Plenty of seriously disturbing scenes though!

MoonStarsAndRainbows · 08/07/2024 19:12

Usually it’s down to creepy directors, and wanting to gain fellow creepy men to watch their shows.

It’s 99% women who are naked and on display in these scenes.

Just more objectification of women 🤦‍♀️

Pinkbonbon · 08/07/2024 19:12

Tbh what annoys me is the just jump on the woman with no foreplay or anything. And rarely is a condom ever discussed either. Or lube.

Now I get that we probably don't want to see that but, I've met men these days seem to think they can just skip foreplay. And that were all just good to go. And that, let me tell you, is a recipie for injury.

There must be young girls watching thinking that it's normal too.

If you're not going to do a sex scene right, don't do it.

Heretoscroll · 08/07/2024 19:12

willWillSmithsmith · 08/07/2024 19:02

Oh yes, I remember those sex scenes with Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara. And I almost forgot about those scenes in Casablanca and Brief Encounter (a title that would demand sex scenes you’d think).

Yes it needs to be signposted by sex scenes in movies that the characters have chemistry or we’d never know.

hence the word “sometimes”. Perhaps work on your comprehension instead of being sarcastic to someone on the internet who was genuinely trying to provide an answer to the OP’s question.

crumblingschools · 08/07/2024 19:13

I don’t like violence either. Again what was deemed late night tv violence has crept into much earlier viewing now. Very few series at 9pm that you can watch without having gratuitous violence in

DH and I quite often have conversations as to whether particular scenes are necessary.

We are making violence against women, in particular, the norm and it should be something we should be arguing against not encouraging

queenMab99 · 08/07/2024 19:14

I used to think I was just embarrassed because other people were with me, watching, husband and family, but now I am widowed and watch TV on my own, I am still uncomfortable. I just fast forward now!

That's probably one of the most annoying bits.
Two minutes of unnecessarily loud slurpy kissing (I've eaten overripe nectarines more quietly) thirty seconds of thrusting and she's screaming like she just won the euro millions.

I think everyone should immediately go to YouTube and watch a film called The Room, it's a 2003 film by Tommy Wiseau who wrote, directed, produced and even starred in it 😂 it's honestly one of the worst films ever made but it's so bad I watch it at least once a month and I can't take my bloody eyes off it lol it's like one of my favourite films just because it's so bad and the sex scenes in that are just amazing 😂 it's not satire or a piss take it is genuinely what I think Tommy Wiseau thinks makes a great film lol I made my partner watch it after he complained that his best mate always recommends the worst films for him to watch as if they are brilliant and he said he will never forgive me for putting him through that shite 😂 I'm off to watch it now while I eat my tea i think lol

Doseofreality · 08/07/2024 19:23

Pretty Woman.
it was quite important to the plot to show how the vulnerable sex worker gave the wealthy bushman value for money.

ohyesido · 08/07/2024 19:29

NotSoHotMess24 · 08/07/2024 18:50

Presumably lots of people enjoy and are entertained by sex scenes?

Might also be exciting on a date with someone newish, to watch something a bit raunchy, without going full porn.

This has triggered a memory of watching Rise of The Footsoldier with an ex boyfriend who I hadn’t seen for 5 years and cringing hard when the sex scene between Carlton and Denny started.

(we were rekindling and i knew exactly what he was thinking)

usernother · 08/07/2024 19:29

I totally agree OP. I fast forwarded all of them in every series of Bridgerton.

wintersgold · 08/07/2024 19:30

It's part of the story, it draws you in, it makes the film artistic and emotive.
Many scenes are 'unnecessary' but they do add value in their own way.

DoorPath · 08/07/2024 19:34

Jesus Christ, English women are so repressed. Don't you ever get horny? Most of us like watching sex scenes because they're hot. A bunch of sexless prudes on here.

TeaAndStrumpets · 08/07/2024 19:36

The Bridgerton adaptations are broadly similar to the original books (which TBF had some bodice-ripping going on) but I raised an eyebrow at the threesome in the most recent episode. Although it was so cornily done it was hilarious.

Totally agree OP, not only do many films underestimate the intelligence of the audience, they also don't credit us with any imagination.

Crinkle77 · 08/07/2024 19:38

pandasorous · 08/07/2024 18:35

I think the entirety of that film was probably unnecessary (I didn't watch it, I tried to read the book but I couldn't cope beyond page 1 due to the abominable writing)

That is true!

wastingtimeonhere · 08/07/2024 19:40

It's a lack of talent on the directors/ producers parts, rely on salacious/ shock instead of actually getting actors acting.

I tried to watch Bridgerton with teen DD. Oh god the horror of it 😂 we eventually decided to watch it separately!
