What's the point of bloody sex scenes? Is there a single film that's genuinely needed one?

They're everywhere. I'm just waiting for the next bloody Harry Potter film to be Harry Potter And The Beast With Two Backs.

What's the point of them? I've never watched a film in my life where I've gone ahh, well, i was a bit confused but now i saw that bit of sweaty nudity and theatrical groaning I totally get the characters and the plot.

It's ridiculous. I'm watching a film and all of a sudden I've got two naked professional fakers writhing around on screen for no discernable reason.

This is in chat not aibu because I'm not. I bet none of you can name a film that badly needed us to see the characters fucking.

Porn films are obviously excluded. I accept that without the sex, we simply won't understand why the pizza delivery guy was happy not getting £18.95 for the cheese crust large ham and pineapple.

I was going to make a joke about stuffed crust but I'm a better person than that.

You could ask the same about violent movies.

I think sex is normal and healthy and frankly seeing beautiful people having sex isn't the worst thing for me.

I still love the scene in Original Sin with Angelina Jolie. She was stunning.

SecondhandTable · 08/07/2024 18:08

Totally agree! So many are just beyond cringey and the 'male gaze' is awful too. We usually see so much more of women than men and the inequality really annoys me.

Gnomegarden32 · 08/07/2024 18:11

I agree, I reckon about 9 in 10 of them are unnecessary. I just find them boring.

IncompleteSenten · 08/07/2024 17:41

Maybe I'm just a prude. I prefer the whole lean in for a kiss, fade to black approach rather than some bloke's dimply arse ramming back and forth.

😂

roibustea · 08/07/2024 18:14

Totally agree, it's usually just really boring. On the odd occasion it's actually sexy it's distracting - I want to watch the film, not get all hot and bothered! Much prefer old films where it's all left to the imagination. Plus the men are usually way sexier.

ladymalfoy45 · 08/07/2024 18:14

Performance with James Fox and Mick Jagger.
But I always find sex in films a bit cringy. I'm not a prude but sex scenes are never a reflection of real life. Trimmed pubic hair , smooth legs etc.

Poplarmoth · 08/07/2024 18:14

Agreed, I think that’s one of the reasons I love Lord of the Rings, no unnecessary sex scenes.

MimitteAndElsaGoToSwitzerland · 08/07/2024 18:15

I like them.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 08/07/2024 18:15

I have no particularly strong feelings about sex scenes, but I'm not sure why you'd assume that the purpose of them was to avoid confusion or to explain the dynamics in a relationship. Surely they are included in the film because they are just part of what happens in the story and a fairly important part of most romantic relationships? What actual reason is there to miss them out unless they are inappropriate for the age rating?

BigButtons · 08/07/2024 18:16

TheShellBeach · 08/07/2024 17:58

Don't Look Now has the most erotic sex scene ever.

It's the only one I can think of which enhances the fillum.

Agreed- was just about to come and say the same thing. The scene matters and is done so well.

Bambooshoot · 08/07/2024 18:16

I completely agree! Passionate kiss, and then leave the rest to imagination, please. We know it’s fake, they know it’s fake, there are a million other sources for bad sex videos on the net, (no doubt also scripted by men with no clue) if that is what people want to look at. I hope the days of making female film stars strip off will be over very soon, so degrading.

I get violent movies where the point is the violence. Like horror films. You see the gore because the gore is the point. Porn films you see the sex because the sex is the point.

But other than that? Manry and John buy a house and there's weird shit happening, noises in the attic and so they have a look around, find nothing then the next thing you know they're in bed stark bollock naked, he's grunting, she's screaming then the next morning the chairs are neatly stacked on top of the dining table.
I ask you, whats the point of the sex scene?

I'm not asking you specifically. I don't hold you accountable. It's a general pondering.

I guess in Terminator sex is pretty crucial to the storyline 🤷‍♀️

In Don’t Look Now it does explain a shifting emotional connection between the characters but I agree, I often sit there and think to myself ‘this isn’t really necessary’.

protectoroftherealm · 08/07/2024 18:25

Nah I quite like a bit of sex in a film, doesn't put me off and I'd find leaning in for a kiss and fading to black cringe central. It's only sex, no different to violence or swearing in a film.

Interesting! You read the post and think the OP has issues?! I read your post and wonder why you want (badly simulated) sex in mainstream films, in this day and age?

stargirl1701 · 08/07/2024 18:27

Terminator.

No sex; no John Connor.

I was just then watching a film and one appeared without warning and for no apparent reason so I started a thread cos I have nothing better to do.

I once started a thread about my husband putting two teabags in a mug of tea and leaving it to brew for what must surely have been a fortnight. I've got no particular deeply buried issues there either other than thinking he commits heinous crimes against tetley.

Random shit of the day stuff.

I quite enjoy them. Some are awful, the against the wall, bra on, screaming orgasm does get a bit laughable of course, but generally I don't object to them at all.

Huge parts of films are unnecessary, if we removed unnecessary bits, they would all be a bout 15 minutes long.

Brokeback mountain would have surely been just a forgettable western with some lovely landscape shots.

ScienceDragon · 08/07/2024 18:28

Chinese historical/costume dramas don't include actual sex scenes. I'm not Chinese, but I like the storytelling and world-building they contain. It's actually quite funny, when someone gets a glimpse of a shoulder, or a bare knee, and there is embarrassment all round (including when it's the bloke's shoulder or knee!). The more contemporary dramas may show a couple sharing a bed, but that's about as far as it goes. The lack of sex scenes does not detract from the story at all.

TeenLifeMum · 08/07/2024 18:28

Sex is an enjoyable part of adult life so I think it’s appropriate to reflect that. I’m also horny 80% of the time so maybe I’m unusual.

Bleurfghjj · 08/07/2024 18:28

They’re sexy and show the intensity of the relationship between the characters?

PontiacFirebird · 08/07/2024 18:29

i think it’s that mostly sex scenes in tv (and I watch far more tv drama that actual films) are very paint by numbers and badly done.
Also very unsexy.
It’s always burst in the door, eat face like rabid dog, push up skirt, immediately hump. The woman is always totally ready to go after 3 seconds of snogging, even if she is 47 ( the chafing!) and it’s all incredibly in sync and choreographed.
I quite like scenes where the sex reveals something new about the character or the relationship, which is rare.

Melisha · 08/07/2024 18:30

Totally agree OP. Even worse are scenes where two characters are talking and the woman just happens to be putting in her bra or getting undressed to have a shower. It is never necessary. Just some female nudity shoved in there.
