Actually most people in Norfolk do pronounce it Hunstanton. The same can't be said of Wymondham (windham), Costessey (cossy) and Happisburgh (hayesbruh)!

Rondel · 06/07/2024 10:44

Yes, I’ve only ever heard it pronounced Hunstanton. What I found mildly odd (foreigner) is the stress, that it’s ‘Hun-STAN-ton’ rather than ‘HUN-stanton ’. then again, BBC newsreaders get the stresses in Irish placenames wrong all the time, so perhaps not always self-evident.

SockQueen · 06/07/2024 10:45

Both of your pronunciations of Llandudno are wrong.

HungryLittleCrocodile · 06/07/2024 10:47

Ooops, some of them are wrong @BurntBroccoli Blush

CandiedPrincess · 06/07/2024 10:49

Bedworth, is Bedworth. Unless you live in Bedworth. Nobody outside of it calls it anything else.

TheCultureHusks · 06/07/2024 10:51

Ok, carry on but please stop with the attempts to transliterate the Welsh Ll!

Also, OP, while Magdalen College in Oxford (and Magdalene, Cambridge) are both pronounced ‘Maudlin’, as is the adjacent bridge in Oxford because it takes its name from the college, the church of St Mary Magdalene in Oxford and the street it’s on are both pronounced ‘Mag-duh- Len’.

How is Llandudno pronounced please?

Glad you asked that. A bit off to yell “wrong” and then not say what is right!

The Welsh "Ll" is not pronounced cl. It is a sound that can't be written out phonetically in English, because the letter doesn't exist in English, but you can find videos on YouTube to teach you.
Llan- DID- noh is the closer I can get to the correct pronounciation. The end bit is not an "ow" sound, more of an open "o" like at the end of "buongiorno" in Italian.

Arlanymor · 06/07/2024 11:06

If you want to get technical, ‘ll’ is a voiceless dental fricative with a lateral release… but simply the reason people get annoyed with ‘clan’ is because it’s lazy anglicising. Ll is more of a THL sound than a CL sound. You have to put your tongue to the top of your mouth and behind the upper row of teeth.

Since when has Hunstanton been called Hun-ston?? Definitely never heard that pronunciation from anyone in Norfolk, perhaps was a very old or very local pronunciation ??

Chwarae teg! 👏👏👏👌

Amimaimia · 06/07/2024 11:12

“Wales” is not pronounced Landudno or Clandudno! The spelling for Llandudno is two Ls. Though people think Welsh spelling is hilarious it is very easy and phonetic! No silly tricks like the English language!

I doubt anyone outside of Clan Did no really cares 🤣

EdithStourton · 06/07/2024 11:13

My Norfolk rellies call it Hunston.
