It's hard to explain 🤣 but your tongue doesn't touch the roof of your mouth and the tip of your tongue shouldn't touch your top front teeth.

Hope that helps. Lol

I used to have a complete brain fart over Appledurcombe [Isle of Wight] and couldn't work out the obvious, so called it Apple crumbe for ages.😁

Fabulous!
I've never heard of that!

Well learn it then! What’s stopping you?

The fact that I don't have time. Learning languages is my favourite thing to do. I speak 4 and already need to find the time to maintain the one of those in which I'm least fluent, while teaching full time. I'm also at conversational level in one orher and am already learning another one. If I could quit my job and someone would pay me to just learn languages, that would be great Grin

"Alcester in Warwickshire confuses me"

I'd say Alster. Like Bister and Lester

I think it’s entirely understandable for Welsh people to expect UK-based people to know how to pronounce it. I do, and I’m not originally from the UK, and my main knowledge of Wales has been occasional weekends in Cardiff, a brief stint at the national library in Aberystwyth, and heading for the ferry at Holyhead.

Good for you. Doesn’t mean you get to come in and lecture people from other parts of the UK. I can absolutely guarantee that their there are place names from around the world that all those berating others would have significant trouble pronouncing. I will not apologise for being human and making a mistake or my nationality. How about being polite and nicely correct a person by explaining how it should be pronounced rather than turning an innocent lighthearted thread into a bitter xenophobic political diatribe.

Keighley is NOT pronounced with a TH.

Where the fuck are you getting these from OP?

I'm afraid you are incorrect.
It is indeed KEITH-ley

Is it "Eh" at the end rather than "ee"?

Cogenhoe near Northampton
Pronounced Cook-no

And Toaster!

I agree but the Al-ces-ter person grew up there so I figured he probably knew better than I did 🤣

Nope. It's not. It's just impossible to write down how you pronounce it and th is very close.

And I haven't sworn at anyone. This is a site for grown ups and if they want to use swearwords then happy fucking days.

Mytholmroyd · 06/07/2024 11:52

Well this is definitely not right!

This is better - you sort of swallow the th - so it's not a sound made with your tongue behind your top teeth like you make the 'th' sound - the tongue is back on the roof of your mouth and you swallow the th - gosh it's so difficult to explain!

And I wouldn't say lee at the the end - it's not a long vowel more of a li because the emphasis is on the first syllable. The two vowel sounds in the two syllables are not the same. Posh people might say lee though!

Surprised Slaithwaite hasn't had a mention.

TakeOnFlea · 06/07/2024 11:53

Definitely wouldn't say Lee. More Li (disclaimer, I'm not posh)

I’m assuming it’s not ‘Slay-thwait’, then?

I think you are getting confused between how it is spelled phonetically and how it is said. Yes it isn't pronounced gh.

But if you don't know how th sounds are made in the mouth with a Yorkshire accent you may have to pronounce it th I guess (you may not even hear the difference) but that isn't how it is properly said by a person from West Yorkshire.

TakeOnFlea · 06/07/2024 11:59

You're explaining it better than me @Mytholmroyd Grin

Slaithwaite is Slough It

SearchBedSocksNearMe · 06/07/2024 12:01

Blimey, some people are really getting their undies in an uproar on here aren't they?

I'm from Worcestershire, which I think most Brits know how to pronounce but it's entertaining to hear other nationalities giving it a go, usually when talking about our famous sauce.

Mumoftwo1316 · 06/07/2024 12:02

I've heard all sorts for Blenheim Palace, which I think should just be Blennim.

Separately, I used to live near Penge, which rhymes with Henge, but we sometimes pronounced it the French way to make it seem posher "Punjh".

Sharrap · 06/07/2024 12:06

Rondel · 06/07/2024 11:30

Well, it reassures me that there was more than just me running about London talking about Theydon Bwah, like I’d just come straight from the Battle of Hastings.😀

🤣

I have never said Keighley so many times in so few minutes for a long long time! 😂

My son thinks I have finally gone mad!

TakeOnFlea · 06/07/2024 12:09

Heard a few mispronunciations of Oswaldtwistle lately on the news (for all the wrong reasons)

Ossle twissle

SearchBedSocksNearMe · 06/07/2024 12:10

I've always pronounced Alcester - Allster - that's 'all' as in 'call' not 'al' as in 'pal'.
