Labour victory feels flat - just me?

I seem to remember after the 1997 landslide the country was on a real high for days - this feels like an anti-climax. Is it just me?

a lot voted labour just to get Tory out

tbh they would of voted for any party that had the forecast majority

Rafting2022 · 05/07/2024 18:36

Yeah feels like a Tory defeat rather than a Labour win.

No, it is flat. This wasn’t Labour winning, it was the Tories losing. Even the Labour adverts said “vote Labour to get the Tories out”. Starmer had no charisma, personality or anything about him, no vision and he isn’t inspiring at all. There’s no real promise of anything different and the majority of people didn’t vote for Labour. This is just the day the Tories lost. I totally agree with you, very different from the feeling in 1997.

I don’t think the weather is helping.

Gloomy.

They won on less votes than Labour did in 2019. Apathy won, as people predicted, thus demonstrating how broken the system is. Labour won on a vote count thinner than a roly paper to be perfectly honest. Labour didn't win, the Tories lost.

NightBirdy · 05/07/2024 18:38

No big high here either, although I did feel a bit emotional watching Keir's speech in Downing Street this morning.
I think we're all exhausted with politics, after the last few years. It feels good to know that some true public servants are at the helm again.

peanutbuttertoasty · 05/07/2024 18:39

Buyer’s remorse?

I don’t think it’s anything to do with the weather!

Social media. You get to read all the moany minnies.

rumred · 05/07/2024 18:40

Definitely not flat here. At last someone with integrity is at the helm.

Nesbi · 05/07/2024 18:40

The world feels fucking awful compared to when Blair got in. The road ahead feels longer and harder than at any time I remember (I’m nearly 50). I’m not dancing in the streets because I feel the weight of what is ahead, but thank fucking god we have a new government with new ideas, new energy and at least a chance of making progress.

I agree. I am ecstatic.

SkippysEar · 05/07/2024 18:43

Wish they'd had a Blair type, singing things can only get better and hosting a parties with the rock stars of today. Starmer is the Gareth Southgate of politics.

LoveSandbanks · 05/07/2024 18:43

If they’d have wine an election a few years ago I’d have been elated but I don’t feel they’ve really won.

it’s not a case of how great they are, it’s really about how shit the tories are.

Farting · 05/07/2024 18:44

It’s not a victory, and 99.999% of people in work will be worse off.

Plus our children will probably go to war. You voted for it, you deserve it so suck it up.

Starlightstarbright3 · 05/07/2024 18:45

My world has more going on than the election ..

People are not expecting the world to turn around . Even labour are saying that .

so whilst I am delighted conservatives are out will hold my celebrations Labour are more concerned about the every day people

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 05/07/2024 18:46

We're in a very different position from 1997. There is much less optimism for very good reason. The new government has inherited a society in which voters are cynical and disillusioned, nothing is functioning as it should, there are major foreign policy and security issues looming, and there is no money in the pot. There isn't much to be excited about.

I feel cautiously positive though. I liked Starmer's speech and I hope that Labour will be able to deliver. Only time will tell.

Oakandashsplash · 05/07/2024 18:46

The world feels like a mess, the road ahead is tough and long but a really decent human being is at the helm - I don't feel champagne popping and dancing happy, just generally calmer and more content than I have for years - which is much more sustainable than fizzy pop happy.

LlynTegid · 05/07/2024 18:46

Relief of no more Tory government is my main feeling.

Iffx · 05/07/2024 18:47

I’m scared.

Laiste · 05/07/2024 18:47

Not one single person i've interacted with today has mentioned the election. (worked in school with parents, been to shops, 3 adult kids of my own)

DH did mutter something about it when he turned the telly on at 6 this morning and there was no news or bloody weather just wall to wall election coverage. So he turned it off again.

It's like a non event.

I think in all honesty on one really believes anything is going to change, we just wanted a fresh load of bullshiters in.

RagzRebooted · 05/07/2024 18:48

I'm quite bouyant and hopeful and I did shed an emotional tear at Kier's early hours speech this morning. It's nice to think there's a normal, sensible person in charge and I've always been hopeful for a Labour government.
However, it isn't a huge victory really and the vote share of Reform takes a shine off. As PPs said, it's more the Tories losing (which I will always celebrate) than Labour winning.
They've walked into a government that faces many difficulties, I am not naive enough to think they'll fix much in the first few years and it certainly doesn't have the hopeful feel that 1997 did, but I'm still happy about it.

cheezncrackers · 05/07/2024 18:48

The 90s was a completely different time. We were Cool Britannia in 1997. There was real hope, optimism and excitement for the future. Now, no one actually believes it will get better and if it does, it will take ages. So what is there to get excited about?

I assume you are now 27 years older than you were in 1997, so you may be a little less optimistic in general.

But also, what the country is facing is serious. We have war in Europe, COVID was tough, long period of no growth, broken public services.

I think it is natural to feel a bit less optimistic than you did in 1997, surely only a fool would be unable to see where we are?

I think we have to give things a chance.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 05/07/2024 18:51

I think it's also true that the rise of the far right makes it harder to celebrate this result.
