To people who voted Reform…

…and ended up with a Labour MP (due to splitting the conservative vote), how do you feel?

@Triestre I'm assuming you don't need the NHS? That's why any government would raise taxes.

And what do you mean about loads of people on benefits? If the Conservatives are the party who crack down on benefits then how come after 14 years in power there are more people on benefits than ever??

Was there no other candidate? I cannot fathom people voting for the far right and Nigel Farage just because they didn’t want to vote for the tories or Labour. I totally get not voting for them, I didn’t but surely the alternative isn’t the far right.

This. It scares me that 15% of the population think Reform is the answer.

With turnout so low, it's actually only 8% of the population. Still bad, but better.

I’m retired too.

Ive paid loads of tax but happy to pay more.

Womderful! Go to HMRC and do it as voluntary contributions. After all you may room for it or are a liar.

Reform helped Labour to win their “landslide”. They hoovered up a huge amount of votes from the Tories, and split the right wing vote.🙂

Missymoo100 · 05/07/2024 16:59

Labour initially said they would spend 28 billion a year funding net zero…
plus the huge economic costs of making ourselves energy insecure - ie by closing down most of our power stations.
Then because fuel is expensive it affects literally everything, production, food, jobs… it’s destructive and will make us all significantly poorer.

That’s all irrelevant though as that pot of money doesn’t exist. All of your expensive reform policies, how would they be paid for if you cut taxes?

I hate the trend of looking down on others because they voted differently to you. So many superiority complexes seemingly oblivious that when they do this they are attacking democracy.

When did they say about raising taxes today? Because yesterday they were saying they would not raised taxes.

As for people on benefits. Check the numbers and the net contribution and then comment on it.

There's plenty more evidence but quite frankly I can't be bothered to waste more time here. 😂

Not evidence that the entire party was built on Racism. Just as I would not dare to be so bold as to accuse the entire labour party of being racist.
Labour have stamped down on their racists. As have Reform. Best to leave it there😶

It’s not irrelevant, they’re still going 5 billion a year going on net zero and costs of legislation- ie no petrol cars by 2035 affecting manufacturing industry. It’s not a zero sum game, if you tax lower earners less they have more disposable income which helps the economy. If you don’t impose costs of net zero on the public and business, productivity would increase. Productivity generates more revenue without taxing people to death.

Longdueachange · 05/07/2024 17:10

I know a lot of people who voted Reform because they dm wanted Torys out but don't agree with Labour's stances on farming, inheritance tax, hunting and shooting etc. In my area the its right wing, but Labour won with 40%, whilst Tory and Reform combined took 50%. Voting Reform isn't always anything to do with racism as some suggest, although illegal immigration is a massive concern. Many just felt not represented by either main party. We are a semi rural constituency, with a lot of farming. We have I suppose a rough town with nice suburbs and very middle class outlying villages, so it's very mixed.

You didn't read my post properly. And you might make more sense if you thought more sensibly than responding to dog whistle politics.

  1. The Conservatives made it a priority to get people off benefits
  1. After 14 years of a conservative government why then would there be more people on benefits than ever, now? 🧐
  1. Perhaps the answer to 2. Is that they have fucked the NHS so that people can't get treatment and therefore are too sick to work.
Emmanuelll · 05/07/2024 17:13

I think VAT will rise.

EasternStandard · 05/07/2024 17:13

@Triestre yes interesting to see the raft of increase taxes posts today - after claiming it wouldn’t happen or it was ‘scaremongering’

Time now spent priming people for tax rises

Yupthatsit · 05/07/2024 16:11

They aren't the best of a bad bunch. They're a bunch of dangerous racists who increase hate.

No they are not. Some of their supporters might be, just as some of labours supporters are vile racists and bigots as well, or just generally unsavoury types. In fact that could be said for some of labours official representatives.

This thread is full of people who don't believe in paying taxes and conflate immigrants with asylum seekers. Yep, I can see why Reform would appeal to you...

People do pay taxes though don’t they, at the highest rate since ww2.

Emmanuelll · 05/07/2024 17:22

Paying tax is not a choice.

Reform voters (it seems) are ideologically opposed to paying taxes. Anyone who has that view and needs the NHS, or expects the police or the fire brigade to help them in an emergency in downright dim.

littlebopeepp234 · 05/07/2024 17:22

I didn’t vote reform but looked at the results from my constituency and both the reform and Tory voters together would not have beat labour so they did not split the Tory vote.

The people who I know who voted reform wanted tories out anyway so do not mind that they may have split the Tory vote

I didn't vote for them btw, and whilst paying tax isn't a choice many feel that there are too many people not contributing by lifestyle choice, making the high taxes an unfair burden on workers.

suburburban · 05/07/2024 17:28

Yes absolutely

Missymoo100 · 05/07/2024 17:28

Emmanuelll- working people are paying taxes- you ignore that it is at highest rate since ww2, we also have high rates of inflation and low wage growth, higher housing costs… but yeah keep crushing people and the economy by taxing more and allowing goverment to continue p*ssing it up the wall on various stupid schemes.

I don't think that the whole 15% thinks Reform is the answer. Some of them were just sticking two fingers up to a political system that has done fuck all for them for a long time. I'm familiar with two of the constituencies that returned Reform MPs and if you knew those towns, you'd some understanding of the level of discontent and they sense the people who live there have of being ignored.

I did not vote Reform BTW.

PointlessSummer · 05/07/2024 17:29

I live in a labour stronghold, they always win by loads so I voted Reform as a protest vote knowing they wouldn’t win. I wanted the Tories out but don’t politically align with Labour. Reform came 2nd here. Labour doubled their majority.

Emmanuelll · 05/07/2024 17:30

@Longdueachange What do you mean ‘lifestyle choice’?

The Tories have cut benefits in numerous ways, ie benefit cap, 2 child cap, LHA average rate which saw many people moving out of London, tax credit cuts and they’ve made disability benefits impossible to get without a tribunal.

And there are still people like you saying that benefits are too high and people can claim them as a lifestyle choice? You don’t know what you’re talking about.
