To people who voted Reform…

…and ended up with a Labour MP (due to splitting the conservative vote), how do you feel?

I’m happy with the outcome.

Reform was never going to take power. In this election. But they ask the hard questions and don’t just follow the ‘accepted’ consensus.

Voting reform is a message that we don’t want identikit politicians and that the status quo is frankly 💩.

I wanted:

  1. Farage in parliament where he will hold both Labour and the Tory’s feet to the fire.
  2. The Tories to be routed enough to realise that we think they are lying charlatans and no we won’t put up with it forever.
  3. Labour to realise that there is a lot of opposition to ‘woke’ and much of the left wing nonsense, and that a failure to govern for all will likely mean a bigger swing to Reform in the future at a time that the shine has worn off Labour.

I have exactly what I wanted. Very happy.

What’s left wing nonsense out of interest ?

StarDolphins · 05/07/2024 15:16

I was undecided between CP & Reform and I’m not joyed at the new Labour MP but I can’t change it so I’ll just hope for the best but expect the worst.

crumblingschools · 05/07/2024 15:18

For those saying they would happily pay more tax, do you already voluntarily pay more tax, because you can do that

SkippysEar · 05/07/2024 15:18

Reform voters got their point across. Tories wouldnt have won anyway. It makes it tricky for Starmer now though, knowing 4 million people wont want a wishy washy policy on immigration.

EasternStandard · 05/07/2024 15:19

I didn’t vote for them but I’d say people are happy to have the pressure 4m votes will exert on politicians and the media

No because a few people doing it wouldn't make a difference but millions doing it would.

Leniriefenstahl · 05/07/2024 15:25

We know that Farage won’t deliver. Like when he was an MEP he only turned up to 1 out of 42 fishery committee meetings. The guy’s a grifter with a great gift of the gab.
Never answers questions but nor does he get scrutinised either.
If you asked a reform voter what they know of the party’s plans for the NHS or workers rights you’ll draw a blank. That’s the worrying thing. We can only hope that the media will now challenge him and his MPs like they do labour or the Tories. No stone unturned kind of thing, shine a light etc. Otherwise we’re fucked. I like Starmer but god he needs to toughen up.

Billyandharry · 05/07/2024 15:25

@SkippysEar I'm sure Starmer will have sleepless nights worrying if he's too 'woke' or wishy- washy for the Reform voters! 😂😂

Theunamedcat · 05/07/2024 14:27

Rude

People on benefits pay taxes too

Nowhere near enough though. Same also applies to the majority of FT workers.

TheThingIsYeah · 05/07/2024 15:27

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 05/07/2024 14:41

I’m retired too.

Ive paid loads of tax but happy to pay more.

Give HMRC a call.

Why wait for a government to force you to?

TootYourOwnHorn · 05/07/2024 15:28

I think it's the same here as others have mentioned. People were sick of our useless, ineffective MP and used their vote to show that. It's been a firm Tory seat for a long time, the previous MP was very good. This guy, not so much. We now have a labour MP who seems passionate and actually grew up locally so we'll see what happens I suppose.

Billyandharry · 05/07/2024 15:29

@Leniriefenstahl he certainly has the gift of the gab!
Remember the Brexit bus anyone? Billions going to the NHS rather than the EU. Why do people fall for his crap?

Good for you. I've paid enough. I'm retired, having only been able to do so some years after I had expected to, and after 40 odd years paying tax, am still taxed on savings too, for saving money I've already been taxed on. Surely the better target would be Amazon and other huge companies who get out of paying their share, but I don't think any government will be brave enough to do that.

whatyear · 05/07/2024 15:30

Labour have actually outlined a sensible plan for how they will fund their plans to improve social services in their manifesto - if they can put that in action it will be great for the UK @caringcarer

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 05/07/2024 15:41

I would just like to say an ENORMOUS "Thanks!" for splitting the Tory vote in our constituency by just enough to get the sitting Tory replaced by a Lib-Dem.

EasternStandard · 05/07/2024 15:44

TheThingIsYeah · 05/07/2024 15:27

I’m sure they’d say yes to more

MiniBattenburg · 05/07/2024 15:47

If this election has shown anything it's how corrupt the fptp system is and in favour of keeping labour and cons in power.
Reform won 4 seats on 14% of the vote while cons got 21% of the vote and 121 seats.
I don't even want to vote again because I hate labour and the tories.. We need a fairer system.

TheThingIsYeah · 05/07/2024 15:50

@EasternStandard Exactly.

I roll my eyes every time someone declares on MN they would be "happy to pay more tax".

Guess we'll find out in the coming months just how happy.

Missymoo100 · 05/07/2024 15:52

Fine, I mean I’m not exactly looking forward to 5 years of a Labour government- but that’s what the majority who voted want and we live in a democracy, so yeah it is what it is…

caringcarer · 05/07/2024 15:53

Yupthatsit · 05/07/2024 15:04

And the Tories would have magically improved services without increasing taxes? Wow! Magic money.

No the Tory's wouldn't have improved services either. Don't know what made you think I thought they would have. There is no money for whoever got in without raising taxes or borrowing more.

TheThingIsYeah · 05/07/2024 15:55

Reform took 4.1m votes and returned 4 MPs.

LibDems took 3.5m votes and returned 71 MPs.

There are more independent MPs under the pro-Hamas banner than Reform or Green MPs.

The NHS has been given more than double what was on the bus. It's a black hole that swallows money.

Lalalacrosse · 05/07/2024 15:57

TheBigStrawberry · 05/07/2024 14:59

@Lalalacrosse George Osborne made the point on the ITV coverage that Farage might find Westminster hard to make himself heard in. He can't just speak whenever he likes in the house of commons.

Nope. But he will have more chance of getting airtime. And in the modern world, it’s not what is said in Parliament that matters - after all, when was the last time you sat down to watch a Parliamentary debate? Or a select committee?

Most campaigning and change happens first outside the chamber.

The NHS now chomps through £1billion every two days. How much more should be thrown at it?

Lalalacrosse · 05/07/2024 16:00

Billyandharry · 05/07/2024 15:07

@Lalalacrosse glad you're happy. What do you think about Farage seeing Andrew Tate as a great role model for boys? I think he's a misogynistic twat btw - does that make me woke?

Farage said he’s an important role model for boys, but that Farage himself dislikes him. farage said that people should be worried that AT is a role model.
