Thread 55: Sunak gives up

What’s the delay??!! It doesn’t usually take this long does it?? Who’s in charge during this in between bit??!!

Something tells me the King will be very happy about this. I suspect he and Starmer have a lot in common.

Really? I think he'll hate it. He's shown himself to be irascible and (unsurprisingly perhaps) elitist since becoming King. I've been disappointed.

BIossomtoes · 05/07/2024 11:51

I think you’re probably allowed to be irascible if you’ve just lost your mum and got cancer. He’s had a tough couple of years.

He's also facing that classic timeless cup o'sick that is getting what you finally wanted when it's far too late in life. Almost as bad as a posthumous first #1 single.

Maybe. But the irascibility started before the illness. And I can't overlook him installing William as PoW before anyone could breathe when it's not a necessary position and he k ew it wasn't wanted in Wales. Behaving like a medieval monarch. I've never been a fan but thought he was one of the better ones. Now I dislike him intensely.

the80sweregreat · 05/07/2024 11:57

Which two seats are yet to be declared ?

He's a King.

That's what Kings do.

One is the which has Skye in it. Recount.

RishiAteMyHamster · 05/07/2024 12:00

Keir is at the palace meeting the King.
As a Republican, I find this part of the process a total nonsense.

cardibach · 05/07/2024 12:00

Well, yes @SerendipityJane
But they don't have to. He could have taken a more conciliatory line knowing the feeling in the country (not just Wales). He could modernise. But no. He wants the medieval trappings.

I think they're in Scotland and won't happen until tomorrow! Recounts.

Me too. It's nonsense. We as a nation have de fed what government we want. It shouldn't wait on one man's approval, however symbolic/ritualistic.

One is the which has Skye in it. Recount.

The other is South Basildon and East Thurrock, which is also having a recount (this afternoon, so hopefully we will know the result of that one today, at least).

Apparently on the initial count Reform were ahead by 126 votes but lots of counting errors were spotted, so it might not be the final result when they've gone through everything again...

Full recount to take place after South Basildon and East Thurrock 'too close to call'

The decision was made by the attorney officer at 6am after a rebuilding exercise lead to the seat being "too close to call."

Thanks for the correction @Watercoloursky

It's been a long 24 hours with two short sleeps.

LazyGewl · 05/07/2024 12:06

Rishi has become the fall guy for the most corrupt British government in my lifetime. What an absolute shower. Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, the Moggy. How the fuck have we all survived them?

A modern King is an oxymoron. As others have just pointed out ....

Excellent long thread from Tom Bacon -

So, it's the morning after! What do I make of the General Election results? What does this mean for the future of the country?

You can't have everything.

Where would you put it ?

He did seem like he might try to be more 20th century. 21st probs too much of an ask. Denmark seems to manage modern monarchy (as do others elsewhere).

L1ttledrummergirl · 05/07/2024 12:17

I'm awake and caught back up with you all.

I agree with whoever said the coverage was poor, I have gaps in my bingo card/ wish list (it was quite long) and will gave to hunt for them.

DuncinToffee · 05/07/2024 12:19

Congratulations PM Keir Starmer
