Likelihood of neighbours exploding with rage

The live next door. We both have detached houses. Gardens run alongside for about 40’ and then our plot has a field and paddock attached and then it’s open countryside for literally miles.

The neighbours hate forriners. We are forrin and slightly brown. They moved from their last house to “get away from that sort of thing” and must have been horrified to see us!

Anyway they have complained about pretty much everything they can. Noisy mower. Noisy children. Holiday cottage (tiny, for 2 people) at the end of the field. Our BBQ. Our chimnea. Not putting the bin away quick enough, and the outdoor solar fairy lights being too bright and on a flashy pattern.

They are only mid 30s and have two young children who they won’t let play in the garden in case someone from the holiday cottage sees them because literally any paedo could be in there, etc.

Latest was that they objected to me and DH quietly chatting on the patio at the outrageously late hour of 10:30, Saturday before last. They come round and stand with their finger on the ring doorbell, ranting.

Anyway, the local farmer has delivered two beehives and they’re buzzing away beautifully, in our garden. They are placed in such a way that forces them to fly up and over, away from the neighbours but some of them are quite disobedient.

I don’t think the neighbours have noticed yet. But they’re going to go crackers aren’t they?

I think that’s what you (and I ) are hoping !!

Setorrunny · 04/07/2024 14:57

I wouldn’t go out of my way to piss off anyone but, well, they have form…

Well played OP <chuckles evilly and rubs hands together in anticipation> Grin

SoupDragon · 04/07/2024 15:13

I'm with them on flashing fairy lights but other than that, they're twats. Crack on!

if when they complain, tell them to buzz off.

Narcissisticflipflop · 04/07/2024 15:14

Sound like they deserve it, crack on op 😂

CormorantStrikesBack · 04/07/2024 15:17

Noisy mower?

do they expect you to cut the grass with scissors? 😂

offer them a jar of honey 👍😁

Littlefish · 04/07/2024 15:17

Excellent! Well played.

Mumoftwo1316 · 04/07/2024 15:21

I'm forrin and brown too and flashing fairy lights give me the rage. It's like setting off a klaxon in my brain. Is the holiday cottage yours? I would also have a strong aversion. I think it's unfair to attribute their criticism to racism. I'm on team Grumpy Neighbour for most of your op.

I like bees though so carry on with those...!

GasPanic · 04/07/2024 15:21

They sound unreasonable on some points and reasonable on others - depending on a lot of factors.

I would just be polite and say "oh yes we must do something about that" every time they ring the door and not stoop down to their level. Then do nothing and ignore them. Eventually they might get bored.

Taking the moral high ground is always better than waging war.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 04/07/2024 15:24

Next it may be a good idea to get some really smelly fertiliser from a local farmer and spread on your garden, naturally in the middle of summer and the day before you go on holiday for 2 weeks.

I've heard deer poo stinks.

MrsBungle · 04/07/2024 15:28

Hopefully your disobedient bees sting the miserable buggers.

Oh come on, it's reasonable to be irritated inwardly at flashy lights but who goes and hammers on the door to complain?

TimeForMyMonthlyNameChange · 04/07/2024 15:30

Oh my word I love this!

Hoppinggreen · 04/07/2024 15:31

ooooh I love Bees and your house sounds lovely

Marblessolveeverything · 04/07/2024 15:31

Just warn your holiday home residents, bee allergy not that rare these days not to mention those of us who are petrified of them.😱
Have you considered adding a bit of country dancing at the weekend to your repertoire ? 😜

susiedaisy1912 · 04/07/2024 15:35

Please get a hot tub and place it right next to their property line and have it running all summer. 😂

Setorrunny · 04/07/2024 15:35

The holiday let is no where near the bees and the listing has been changed to note it anyway for ages but it’s taken this long to actually organise the delivery of the hives and gear and stuff.

That’s an idea. We had a pool for the kids for a bit, and they complained about the heater making a noise, and then moaned they could hear the pump. The heater was air source so the fan moved even if it wasn’t switched on, rather like a wind turbine and they didn’t like that. The kids stopped bothering with it when they hit their teens so we got rid.

These are DH’s thing, not mine really but they’re hypnotic! One of the kids is into it too and has a suit!

Flashing bright fairy lights are bloody annoying. BBQ and chimnea - how often are they on?

Everything else - they’re being unreasonable.

Just check your NDN don’t have any anaphylactic reactions to bee stings and you’ve got a calm variety of bee. I seem to recall (but could be wrong) they return to the hive in a straight line so they might be in the bee’s line. I’m all for keeping bees - I have family members who are professional bee keepers - and while there’s no law against keeping them in your back garden I know they are other bee keepers do advocate for being careful when you’re keeping them in close proximity to others.

The fairy lights are on every Christmas. Even the kids have complained at their dimness but that’s what you get with solar power in winter! I refuse to stop them flashing though. Season of goodwill and all that. They’re on the front of my porch. It’s my festive little “fuck you”!

I’ve spoken at length to both hives. I’ve said “don’t go near next door because they are arseholes.”

Ooh, they wouldn’t be able to do anything mental, like spray them with anything? Or turn the hose pipe on them from over the fence, would they? I’m so bloody envious; I’d love a bee hive.
