Anyone else out there who hasn't had Covid?

Lilifer · 03/07/2024 20:15

I have yet to get Covid. Both me and my mum (85years old) have never had it or at least have never tested positive.

I think this is really strange as pretty much everyone else that I know has had it and some have had it multiple times over and been really ill.

What also makes it odd is that I have a chronic low white blood cell count which is not life threatening but supposedly leaves me more vulnerable to illness.

The longer it goes on the more I am hoping that maybe I somehow have some immunity to this virus, or maybe I'm just really lucky, I hope that continues 🙏🙏

Yup! And I work in a school and worked throughout lockdown. Never had it. No idea how I have escaped, some of my colleagues are up to 4 times now.

Same, well as far as 2020 was concerned. I worked in a residential unit (drug and alcohol rehab) so was in every day but, as far as I am aware I’ve never had it. Been vaccinated a few times as well (3 times?).

ShowOfHands · 03/07/2024 20:52

In a 2021 research review, experts found that the prevalence of asymptomatic COVID-19 among people with a confirmed COVID-19 infection was 40.5 per cent

I don't think you know you've never had it, unless you've been tested for antibodies.

Same with flu, how the heck do people know if they haven't had it, unless they're tested very regularly for its presence or screened for antibodies?

Nightblindness · 03/07/2024 20:53

Although I have had it, most of my family - my children, my siblings, etc - have not and they were all, as much as anyone could be, out and about throughout the pandemic. I think some people must have natural immunity.

I managed to avoid it for 4 years. Thought I must be immune but got it 3 weeks ago finally. Strangely, no one around me contracted it.

I don't know how anyone could have flu and not have symptoms. I have had flu 3 times in my 54 years and it was hell.

I was hoping that maybe if I haven't had it by now then maybe I have some kind of immunity but reading here some of you never had it till the last few weeks so I guess it could still await me 😞

Don’t test and won’t test so officially I have never had it.
I reckon I have had it twice though.

Flu can also be mild or asymptomatic. It’s a popular MN myth that it can’t possibly be the flu if you can get out of bed.

The tests seem so unreliable too - I have had a couple of mild colds that I guess might have been covid but they just felt like any other cold I have had.

I’m currently positive after dodging it for 4 years. Dh, ds(20), my 2 siblings and their families have never knowingly caught it yet. 2 other siblings and their spouses have had it several times. All equally socially active.

I don't know how anyone could have flu and not have symptoms. I have had flu 3 times in my 54 years and it was hell.

Flu is asymptomatic in three quarters of cases, meaning 75% of people don't know they've had it. For others, it's a mild cold.

I've taken part in a study for influenza and had it with not a single symptom and when I had swine flu, I had a slightly runny nose (swabbed and confirmed).

A bad virus =/= flu

It could be flu and flu does often present more severely than some viruses, but not always. Not even the majority of the time.

HoldingTheDoor · 03/07/2024 20:58

Also I’m very envious, but happy for those who have escaped it so far. I’m currently on my sixth dose of Covid.

Jutemat · 03/07/2024 20:18

Dont test for it and you'll never get it

Very true.

TheChosenTwo · 03/07/2024 21:00

Dh to his knowledge hasn’t had it.
The rest of us 4 in the house have, one after the other with a bit of overlap, and then I’ve had it again.

redrobin75 · 03/07/2024 21:01

Me and my husband haven't had it although our dc have. We were on holiday in northern Italy when it was spreading and I worked in a school. It's quite odd!

I’ve just googled this. The figure seems to be 1 in 3 asymptomatic not 75%

If it were that high why is there such a big vaccine drive and high hospital admissions every winter.

KnitnNatterAuntie · 03/07/2024 21:03

I've never had Covid. At the beginning of the epidemic, I was working for the NHS and going into work every day. When I retired I had one week off and then worked as a volunteer at a vaccine centre until it eventually closed

I had several occasions when I was definitely in contact with someone who tested positive shortly afterwards

All the rest of my family have had Covid, many of them at least twice.

Suppose it depends on the study but even 1 in 3 tells you you can't possibly know if you have it or have had it. 33% of people in that case would be asymptomatic.

Perr · 03/07/2024 21:05

My sister never had it despite working as a nurse through the pandemic and still. She has to test regularly for work. She reckoned she had a superior immune system due to her healthy lifestyle.
Spoke too soon though as she's got it now and pretty poorly.
I gather there's a big wave around now.

ShowOfHands · 03/07/2024 21:06

And the vaccine drive and hospital admissions are usually for vulnerable groups. In the healthy population, it's not routinely vaccinated against.

maybe, maybe not. I don’t really care. Doesn’t change how unwell or otherwise I feel knowing the name of the virus I have.

MargaretThursday · 03/07/2024 21:15

I only got it for the first time in January this year.
Ds hasn't had it, despite being round family and friends with it and when it was rife at school. We have been testing him too.
Interestingly he's had the most injections too as he's CV, so it looks like it has protected him.

IWanderedLonely · 03/07/2024 21:16

Me.

Callingoctopus · 03/07/2024 21:16

No never had it, neither has husband, don't know of anyone else swerving it. Most people I know had a bad time of it at one time or another, including long COVID and near death amongst elderly relatives. We weren't particularly careful so don't know why

lundland · 03/07/2024 21:18

Four of us here, no one had it, two worked in hospitals and one in retail, no one being particularly careful or taking more than basic precautions. It's just odd.
