I have just noticed how much (quiet) joy I get, while making use of the toilets at my work, from karate-chopping the toilet paper to cut it after I have selected an appropriate length. Works best with work-place continuous roll - for some reason the perforations in domestic toilet paper inhibit the effectiveness of the technique. Any other tiny joys I should keep a look-out for?

When rearranging the duvet on the bed in the morning, you can pretend you're flipping those big whip things at the gym if you it enough welly.

Switching my washing machine on. I thank my luck that I have one. We didn't have one when I was small and I remember my mum doing our washing in the kitchen sink.

That's lovely. I think washing machines have done as much or more to enable women's liberation and improve their lives than legislation and contraception.

Running my thumbnail through and round any foil lid on a jar!

Very satisfying. Both the noise and the trying to cut a circle in tact... 👍

leeverarch · 02/07/2024 14:51

Sardines on toast.

I bought myself a box of Twinings Lady Grey teabags for work and have been drinking those instead of supermarket own-brand teabags. It makes long conference calls a little more bearable.

Freshly ground and brewed coffee in our humble cafetière. Look forward to it every morning.

It's mid winter where I am, and I don't have central heating, or a very warm house.

Getting into bed when I've had my electric blanket on pre-heat. There are no words for this. Only sounds. I do a glee sound to myself every single time 😃

I feel like that every time I get into the shower. Ours didn't work well for ages, dribbling extremes of hot and cold. Now we get the exact temp we want with some power. Amazing!

Taking my bra off and getting PJs on. It signals relaxing time for me!

Also timing my walking to school or work with the music I'm listening to. Extra joy from a song finishing just as I reach my destination.

Aren't the three things that are supposed to have done the most to liberate women the pill, the vote and the washing machine?

Reading my book in bed for half hour before sleep with the dog curled up in the gap between my torso and my elbow. Bliss.

A few pieces of posh licorice for a mid-afternoon snack.

My colour-coded paper diary.

Springwatch123 · 02/07/2024 15:11

My plant containers, especially the one with the trailing fuchsia.

Merlin app - can now identify all the bird song I hear in the garden. It’s fascinating ( and addictive).

I bought some thin, loose, floaty trousers to wear as a beach cover up for a holiday in a few weeks. I discovered how comfortable and freeing they are and now wear them all day every day (have ordered more). I actually look forward to the moment I get dressed in the morning and put them on. They thankfully dry quickly so I just wash them and hang them up every night. Silly amounts of bliss caused by them.

Also the frozen maple and pecan plaits by tesco as a breakfast treat every day. Would highly recommend

A good coffee in my favourite coffee mug. It just feels exactly right in my hands.

I use two screens at work. As I drag emails across from one screen to the other I feel like Princess Leia overseeing the battle in the first Star Wars film.

Sitting with a hot cup of tea as DD naps. I used to do jobs first and my moment of calm always got interrupted with her waking up. Now I tidy up lunch with her, and sit down before tackling anything else. A ring-fenced 5 minutes where I come first, every day.

But also, yes yes YES to the electric blanket pre-heating the bed.

StoneColdAlibi · 02/07/2024 15:20

My husband gets up before me and makes me a cup of tea before busying himself downstairs. Having a cup of tea in bed and an unobserved morning fart once he's left is a highlight.

HillsideFarm · 02/07/2024 15:27

Putting a wax melt in the burner. We were so soo broke for so so long that every penny was punished till it squeaked for mercy. So it feels wildly extravagant and thrillingly decadent to have spent a bit of money to have it literally go up in sweet-smelling smoke. (it is like £3 for three - but it still feels thrilling)

Having a shower with a fancy soap - same as above. the little upgrade up from store-bought 49p blue stripe to a lovely £1.50 soap makes me a little giddy and a bit fancy pants.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 02/07/2024 15:33

Waking up early, no longer working so rolling over and going back to sleep. That never gets boring.

Washing up after dinner and putting everything away and wiping the sink and surfaces. All shipshape for the next day.

I gain an inordinate level of pleasure from finding that there's a '5' in the centre of the square in sudoku.

Oh and my dh's smile (at me)....

I gain a similar level of pleasure when the last square of a sudoku puzzle that I complete is the one in the very centre of the whole thing, especially if it is a 9.

I do a crossword type puzzle where one or two letters are provided and you have to work out the rest and fill in the empty spaces. I take a great deal of pleasure in fitting the letter J in as soon as I can, and I get very disappointed if J is the last letter to complete the puzzle.

The days when J is the actual letter provided make the rest of the day go just right.

Tea, walking around my garden, and, using a hot cloth cleanser while my son is getting ready for bed.

thequeenoftarts · 02/07/2024 15:55

I work weekends so for me Monday morning lie on's are just bliss, especially if the wind is howling and its lashing rain.
A hot bath and body lotion - that silky smooth feeling.
Putting clean bedsheets on my bed and at bedtime crawling in.
Having the electric blanket on, on a cold night.
Getting all my bills paid in a month, while I work I am also self employed and there are stressful months where things don't always go to plan, so when they do the relief of that has no words.
A clean house, dinner cooking and a tv night.
Oh, and the bra off, jammies on feeling
