Would you upgrade to a Superking even though you don’t have much room?

Odd one but we have just moved house and bedroom is smaller. Our bed frame snapped in the move, it was old and it’s been needing to upgrade for some time.

we have a kingsize bed and we are debating going for a Superking.

my husband is 6foot 5 and we both could probably lose weight which means limited size. Our 4 year old gets into bed around 3/4 every morning without fail. We’ve tried everything. We have a dog that sleeps at the end. Also I am 8 months pregnant so baby snuz pod will be next to us and I will be breastfeeding so many wakeups.

measuring out the bed, we won’t get a second bedside table in and we most likely will either need it pushed completely against the wall (husband side he says he is fine with that- I don’t believe it) or maybe get around a 40cm gap down the side and my side won’t have a lot of room

so question - would you have extremely limited space but a big bed that hopefully we all sleep comfortably
or
get another king and keep persevering

I'd go superking. It's the best!

Mischance · 30/06/2024 20:48

Go for the superking - ours is great - and even now since OH has died, I love it - it is my "kingdom" - strewn with specs, books, phone etc. - all to hand.

Superking. A good night’s sleep is EASY better than a bedside table.
And your DH is telling you that he will take shimmying out of bed after a good night’s sleep over being able to step out after a shit night!

We went for the bed - from the best advice ever on here ‘you spend more time in the bed than in the space (or lack of) next to it’

it has been a godsend. Kids are 8 and 4 and fits all of us from 4am comfortably!

Ragwort · 30/06/2024 20:51

Superking ... although I now have the superking to myself and DH has a King size bed in his own room ... can't stand sharing a bed Grin.

Chocolately · 30/06/2024 20:51

We have a super king frame with 2 single mattresses on it. I am a wriggler and it means my DH isn't disturbed by it.
We also have separate duvets.

AnonSoc · 30/06/2024 20:51

You can get quite narrow bedside tables. This is what we have with our super king.

Bridgertonne · 30/06/2024 20:52

I’d go for superking but not pressed up to the wall as I think you’ll wake each other if you get up in the night.

Dearg · 30/06/2024 20:52

We have a Superking and love it, but we can walk round it. Its ok pushed against the wall until someone needs to get up in the night, which we do as we get older.
Would manage without the bedside table , but no to DH crawling over me to get in or out.

TopBun · 30/06/2024 20:53

I had a superking and got rid of it - I didn’t like being so far away from my husband. 😂

21ZIGGY · 30/06/2024 20:54

I did. I can just about get out and walk down one side of the bed, the other side i can fit a bedside table. But i wouldnt change it.

WhereToStartAgain · 30/06/2024 20:55

Definitely. We did this. It felt silly to begin with - too big for the room, but now that we are over that, I'm glad we did it. Don't need floor space, do need bed space!

notgettinganyyounger · 30/06/2024 20:56

Definitely. The bedroom is firstly a place to sleep. So bed size is important.

teenyweenyreeny · 30/06/2024 20:58

Go for the superking it's marvellous but remember that you won't be able to pick up bedlinen from supermarket type places as they tend not to stock s/king and a thick 13 tog feather or even non feather duvet will need to be sent to a laundry as won't fit either a domestic or most launderette machines.

All the things I wish someone had pointed out to me.

Even so, a superking is wonderful and you can get narrow bedside table(s) to fit with a bit of effort. Happy sleeping!

Haha this is kinda us. DH got a superking just before lockdown, we’d had a baby, it was broken in transit and took time, at the time I was like omg could do without this right now. But a few weeks later I’m soooo glad he persevered and got it. It’s been the best thing and now if he wants a good nights sleep for work he has his own bed in a. Different room and the kids get in with me. I’m fine with it 😂

Onabench · 30/06/2024 21:01

If you want it, get it. If you're happy to sacrifice on bedside tables etc...you can get very narrow bedside tables

Bedrooms ARE for sleeping in after all.

Goddessonahighway · 30/06/2024 21:17

Recently bought a superking after having a standard double. It's great. I wouldn't go smaller now.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 30/06/2024 21:18

Yes just make sure you can fit the mattress up the stairs. They're huge!

PrincessofWells · 30/06/2024 21:21

IKEA do a European king-size which is 5ft 4in. I wish we'd gone for that because 6ft is too big, there's a huge gulf between us.

Branleuse · 30/06/2024 21:23

We went back to a kingsize after having a superking and its fine. Superking is lovely, but i wouldnt want to not be able to have my things in my room

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 30/06/2024 21:28

I love our super king but bedding is more expensive and there is less choice.

I’d put up a floating shelf on your husbands side so he can still have a glass of water/book/phone charge close by…

You can just buy singles of everything apart from the bed sheet of course as two singles are the same size as a super.

Or you could buy two separate single mattresses so you can buy singles of everything then.

I never knew that!
