Would you upgrade to a Superking even though you don’t have much room?

Odd one but we have just moved house and bedroom is smaller. Our bed frame snapped in the move, it was old and it’s been needing to upgrade for some time.

we have a kingsize bed and we are debating going for a Superking.

my husband is 6foot 5 and we both could probably lose weight which means limited size. Our 4 year old gets into bed around 3/4 every morning without fail. We’ve tried everything. We have a dog that sleeps at the end. Also I am 8 months pregnant so baby snuz pod will be next to us and I will be breastfeeding so many wakeups.

measuring out the bed, we won’t get a second bedside table in and we most likely will either need it pushed completely against the wall (husband side he says he is fine with that- I don’t believe it) or maybe get around a 40cm gap down the side and my side won’t have a lot of room

so question - would you have extremely limited space but a big bed that hopefully we all sleep comfortably
or
get another king and keep persevering

Wouldn’t do it if the bed as to be pushed against the wall. I don’t like climbing over some one or having someone climb over me to get in and out of the bed.

Aussieland · 01/07/2024 05:08

if one side is up against a wall and the other has a cot next to it will your DH be able to get out?!

isthismylifenow · 01/07/2024 06:10

How agile is your DH?

As he is the one offering to sleep on the side with now no access.

I wouldn't do it to be honest. Every time he gets up he will have to crawl out the bed.

A roomy bed is great, but you have to be realistic about if it's practicle.

And making a big bed without access on one side is also a factor.

I'm going to say no to the super king. I think the lack of space would make me feel claustrophobic.

ClonedSquare · 01/07/2024 06:53

No, I wouldn't get a super king in your situation. We have a king size and it's plenty big enough for my very tall husband, and we're both large people in general. If it means sacrificing bedside tables and being awkward to walk around, I don't think the extra space would be worth it at all.

Perfectlystill · 01/07/2024 07:05

Yes. Buying our super king 20 years ago was the best thing we did

bluecomputerscreen · 01/07/2024 07:33

go for it.
and go for a footless one so that the one sleeping at the wall can get in and out easily.
and get separate (single) duvets. much easier to change than a giant one.

YouveGotAFastCar · 01/07/2024 07:39

I wouldn’t. DH climbing over the bed will be a pain, and probably wake you & baby/toddler if you’re sleeping there. Lots of people don’t plan to cosleep, but sometimes it happens.

I’d also find it really inconvenient not to have a bedside table. I use mine for loads. It’s also one of few cupboards that are generally not of interest to the toddler! meds, drinks, books etc.

I don’t think it sounds like a superking will fit really, you’ll be cramming it in to a too small room.

Chewbecca · 01/07/2024 07:39

No if pushed against the wall. I wouldn't want DH clambering over me to get in / out.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/07/2024 07:43

I've just had a shit night in a king-size where DP was sleeping like he'd developed rigour mortis whilst doing The Birdie Song, the ancient cat needed to curl up into a little ball exactly where my face goes and the nice cat would not move from the bit where my feet need to go.

I'd have two super Kings if I could right now.

RobynDeCantersCar · 01/07/2024 07:43

We have a superking zip and link so two single mattresses that zip together as there was no way we could get a 6ft mattress up the stairs and into our room, we had a 5ft bed at the time we moved and it only just fit. Honestly, get 3 single mattresses and single duvets because changing a superking duvet cover is difficult. Dh and I do it together every week.

If your Dh can shimmy down the bed to get out I would definitely do it. Beds are a wonderful place if you get the right one. We called ours The Cloud for years because it was such a lovely place to be.

Dh is 6'3" so a 6'6" bed is good although his feet still hang off the end.

Trixiefirecracker · 01/07/2024 07:43

Go for it! Bedding is not that much more expensive! I get bedding from Asda for our super king, cheap and okay quality.

Snowtimex7 · 01/07/2024 08:18

i think the Superking comments have won me over!
it seems we will have about a 40cm gap on DH side and already found a few side tables that would fit. He wants a Superking as again DD came into the bed at night in the middle to lie horizontal 😂

we do have wardrobes in the room so it’s not just a bed wall to wall but they can’t be moved out (no space) as well as we’ve tried shuffling them around but doesn’t change the space.

I think we will probably order one and go from there!

thank you all!

I personally wouldn’t, I find changing the bedding on a kingsize enough of a herculean task. But neither of us is particularly big.

MrsTartanTeacosy · 01/07/2024 08:42

I got rid of the superking very quickly, hated being so far away from DP! Nowadays we are actually back to just a double, so more floor space for nighttime toilet trips for DP, and I much prefer the intimacy.

ThePassageOfTime · 01/07/2024 08:45

Do it. We were finally able to get one in last move, DP is also 6 foot 5 and it's TRANSFORMATIVE from a king.

Definitely sacrifice the bedside table and get floating shelves, that 40cm will be very useful when DH needs to wee in night!

Mischance · 01/07/2024 08:46

When we first got our superking DH was on call (he was a doctor) and we had 2 phone lines in the house - work and personal. The phone rang on my side of the bed and it was him ringing me from the other side of the bed to say "Coming over for a cuddle - ETA 10 seconds!"

Weetabbix · 01/07/2024 08:47

Personally I'd keep the king size. I'd hate to have the bed against the wall, it's so awkward for one person to have to shimmy off the end and not have a bedside table.

But I am also a bit ruthless and if it were me, I'd be seriously working on getting both the 4 year old and the dog out of my bed - I couldn't sleep like that😅(but appreciate we're all different!)

Edit: Sorry just saw your update. If there's enough space around to get out of the bed and have a table then yes why not upgrade :)

sabryna · 01/07/2024 08:56

Go for superking, so long as you can get the snuzpod down the side though?

Notthatcatagain · 01/07/2024 08:59

Super king saved my marriage for sure, DH is like an octopus in bed and is incapable of getting in or out gently. When it was delivered the matress wouldn't go up the stairs. Who knew that you can't fold a SK matress? So we have 2 singles that could be zipped together.left unzipped you can use single sheets. The mattresses are quite deep so you may find that you need deeper sheets, measure before you shop

Theothername · 01/07/2024 09:06

Longed for a speaking when my dc were small and the bed was already over occupancy.
But when they got to school age, and were still turning up in the night, or occasionally sick, having a mattress on the floor (and floor space obviously) was a bigger benefit.
