Would you upgrade to a Superking even though you don’t have much room?

Odd one but we have just moved house and bedroom is smaller. Our bed frame snapped in the move, it was old and it’s been needing to upgrade for some time.

we have a kingsize bed and we are debating going for a Superking.

my husband is 6foot 5 and we both could probably lose weight which means limited size. Our 4 year old gets into bed around 3/4 every morning without fail. We’ve tried everything. We have a dog that sleeps at the end. Also I am 8 months pregnant so baby snuz pod will be next to us and I will be breastfeeding so many wakeups.

measuring out the bed, we won’t get a second bedside table in and we most likely will either need it pushed completely against the wall (husband side he says he is fine with that- I don’t believe it) or maybe get around a 40cm gap down the side and my side won’t have a lot of room

so question - would you have extremely limited space but a big bed that hopefully we all sleep comfortably
or
get another king and keep persevering

Love our super king. If it fits then get one I say

teenyweenyreeny · 30/06/2024 21:42

We had our mattress specially made so one side was soft and one size very firm. I could have just bought two single mattresses grrrrr

Springwatch123 · 30/06/2024 21:46

i have a king and find that’s big enough. I wouldn’t want a superking if it sacrificed room in my room, and I wouldn’t have space to put things. Also, it would frustrate me if there were no room to move around the bed.

Yes 😁

TheChosenTwo · 30/06/2024 21:49

I would, as long as you have enough space to move comfortable around the bed then what else do you need masses of floor space for in your bedroom? I only do bedroom type stuff in mine (some people might do yoga or something else in theirs, I don’t know!) which mainly involve me being in bed so I prioritise bed space above everything else.

teenyweenyreeny · 30/06/2024 21:52

Btw a Superking is the same width as two singles but is 3 inches longer so single mattresses would be a wee bit short. Thanks mrs google. Makes me feel (a tiny bit) better about my customised mattress.

Waitingfordoggo · 30/06/2024 21:57

Big bed, defo. Neither of us is tall and we’re both slim but we love having so much space, so does Ddog who sleeps in the middle.

As PP said, you can get narrow bedside tables if you shop around, or you could fit a shelf to wall or corner to use as a bedside ledge.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 30/06/2024 21:57

I have a superking just for me. It's a tight fit but I found super skinny bedside units.
My partner has a double and the first few times staying at his I barely slept when he stayed at mine he thought I was missing at 3am 😂
You spend a lot of time in bed get the biggest, comfiest one you can and you won't go wrong

gimmegimmegimmeagin · 30/06/2024 22:00

No! Ordered it, had it delivered and didn't even sleep in it, it went straight back the next morning (small local business who were very accommodating). It just looked ridiculous and completely took over the room, felt imposing.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 30/06/2024 22:04

Good for it! Ikea has lots of cute shelf/cubby things you can attach to the wall instead of bedside tables.

12345mummy · 30/06/2024 22:05

Go for it OP, you won’t regret it. We NEVER have a disturbed night due to space/rolling in to each other/fighting over covers. Could put a high shelf above bed for books etc and get wall lights (can get chargeable ones from Amazon) to save space.

mrsed1987 · 30/06/2024 22:07

Absolutely. We got a super king last year and it is the best thing ever!

Towerofsong · 30/06/2024 22:07

Don't forget if you upgrade the frame size you'll need a new mattress and new bedding....

Andanotherone01 · 30/06/2024 22:12

We’ve had a superking for 15 years. The bedroom in our old house wasn’t that big but we prioritised it and made it work. It fits brilliantly in the bedroom of our new house. Superking beds are the best and we’d never go back

coldcallerbaiter · 30/06/2024 22:14

Superking is the size of 2 single beds so I never understood how anyone tolerates anything smaller for 2 people.

Floralnomad · 30/06/2024 22:14

I wouldn’t upgrade with the circumstances you describe - no bedside table and bed up against a wall , it will be really inconvenient

Boutonnière · 30/06/2024 22:17

Tricky one .

I can see why lots of posters here like the wide open spaces of a super king but a) I would not like not like to lose bedside tables ( water, lamp, radio ) - ours are small but to me, vital and b) the getting out of bed by climbing over or edging around would get irritating very quickly c) it’s going to visually dominate the room ( the least important aspect)

On the other hand - a 6ft 5” DH. My DH is 6ft 1” but moves very little in the night in our king. Had a previous partner of 6’ 3” who used to move to a diagonal position in the night ( in a double) and I used to feel very edged out. Are your current sleeping positions causing wake ups that would be significantly helped by a super king ?

lerange · 30/06/2024 22:26

I would only get it if it allowed me to follow safer sleep guidelines, keeping the baby in the same room for the first 6 (ideally 12) months. Most babies grow out of a snuzpod before 6m so you'd need to be able to fit a compact cot in your room. We downgraded to a double bed and removed our wardrobe to provide enough space for our space saver cot to fit.

spikeandbuffy · 30/06/2024 22:31

I have a super king to myself
Only allows for one bedside table and I have to turn sideways to walk around the bottom of it but I wouldn't change it for anything

notnorman · 30/06/2024 22:43

PrincessofWells · 30/06/2024 21:21

IKEA do a European king-size which is 5ft 4in. I wish we'd gone for that because 6ft is too big, there's a huge gulf between us.

They don't do them any more in the uk. Which is annoying as I can't get a new mattress for my bed frame now!

MaMisled · 30/06/2024 22:58

We have one in a small room, bought to accommodate us, 3 cats and 2 dogs. It's wonderful!

This. All the people saying super king have clearly never had to put up with having to squeeze and climb to get in and out of bed all the time. It's just a daily reminder of how cramped the room is.

olympicsrock · 01/07/2024 03:24

No if you have to have the bed against the wall.
Yes if DH can get out of his own side of the bed.

PoopingAllTheWay · 01/07/2024 03:25

Dont push right up against the wall, leave afew inches gap if you can
Otherwise mould may build up

ageratum1 · 01/07/2024 03:54

Do it! Best thing we did in the bedroom, along with installing a ceiling fan
