I'm a long time lurker, can I come & sit in here for a while please?

It's crazy out there tonight!

Please do. I was rather hoping you’d find your way here.

Isn't it! Is there a full moon or something? Have a nice sit down @rockstarshoes and a cup or glass of whatever takes your fancy.

Am also curious about Starmer going for 2028? I suppose if things are going well he might choose an early election.

Afloatingvoter · 30/06/2024 23:07

prettybird · 30/06/2024 22:59

@Afloatingvoter - why, with a large majority, would Starmer choose to have an election in 2028? Confused

Refresh his mandate, secure a further 5 years whilst the going is good, only PMs who are frit wait for 5 years.

prettybird · 30/06/2024 23:08
Hmm
prettybird · 30/06/2024 23:09

(There's more I would say but I'm sitting on my hands....)

Brown's biggest error was not going for an early GE.

It's easy to pronounce dreich Grin

As long as you pronounce both a slightly rolled "r" and the soft "ch" (as in the soft ch from loch ) that is soft on the back of the throat.

d - rr - ee - ch

Easy Grin

My South African Dad who apparently kept his accent I couldn't hear it for the 60 years until he died could even say it - and used it regularly (we do live in the West of Scotland after all Wink)

My personal favourite Scottish word is to thole (soft "th") which means to bear [something] with reluctance (the verb always has to have an object - even if it is just it )

So bringing it back to the topic of these threads: the country will no longer have to thole the Conservatives in Government after Thursday Grin

That made me cry. The Labour comes team is so talented.

It'll be four years, Starmer will win the 2028 GE, the Tories will have another bout of navel gazing and then Starmer will step down in 2030.

Why a 2028 election?

But in his situation, he hadn't been elected as PM. I know we don't have a presidential system here but he wasn't the leader of the Labour Party at the time of the previous election.

Much as I won't be voting for Starmer (and never will), I do think he should use the maximum period of time available to him to make a dent in the pile of shit that the Conservatives are leaving him.

For the record: up until 1997 I had always voted either Labour or tactically to try to get out a Conservative (I moved back to Scotland in 1994). Even though I hadn't voted Labour in 1997, I still delighted in seeing the demise of the Conservative Government and the years of the damage they had caused.

Hello - I've set up a General Election prediction game on this thread:

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/politics/5108419-who-will-lose-their-seat-the-mumsnet-general-election-prediction-game

The object of the game is to pick 6 candidates who you think will lose this time. If you guess correctly, you score an amount equal to their majority in 2019. The person with the highest aggregate score wins. Enter by making your picks on the thread above. Come and have a go! 😀

Who Will Lose their Seat? The Mumsnet General Election Prediction Game!! | Mumsnet

Who would like to liven up the General Election by having a competition to see who makes the best predictions? 😀 The object: to win by making the bes...

That was brilliant. Gets you right in the chest. I'm from the north west and I distinctly remember how much better things were under a labour government, I remember watching my grandparents who really struggled under Thatcher and Major being lifted out of poverty in real time when Blair won in 97. Watching my local area get better under labour and then fall apart again under the tories has been horrible. It is exactly the sort of area that the tories just don't care about but I know how good it can be and I hope, I really hope that it can be that good again.

Oh no littledrummer hope she makes an excellent recovery. It's horrid watching them injured. I struggle most with watching ds struggle with muscular disability and how that effects him

@CassieSaysGoodbyeTories I think we have an enormous problem with the media in this country, the Tories have been enabled by a swathe of client journalists who have failed to hold them to account. The media are not supposed to be in cahoots with politicians, I am hoping to see a change after the election, Kuennsberg being moved on would be a great start, also laws similar to New Zealand where media organisations cannot be owned by foreign nationals and non doms.

Absolutely.

Labour have been given a harder time during this election campaign about what they'll do than the Tory's have been given the past 14 years of doing nothing.

I’m not so sure. Kicking democratically elected winners isn’t a good look. The boot will definitely go in after a few months if the numbers don’t start to improve. Reeves is under a huge amount of pressure.

medianewbie · 01/07/2024 08:47

I'm mostly a lurker but honestly the importance of our NHS cannot be overstated. Currently in A&E with Ds (19). Massively sick & chest pains 3am Sat. Didn't perk up Sun so I brought him in at 1am last night. Blood Tryponin level 'over 2000". Waiting to find out if its dropped then will see a Cardiologist to see whether viral pericarditis or a heart event. Still in the corridor (no beds available). Grateful to be here.

VoteOutToHelpOut · 01/07/2024 08:50

@medianewbie you must be so worried. I hope your son is OK and that they find a bed for him soon.

RishisLeavingDo · 01/07/2024 08:52

Best wishes @medianewbie

I saw your other thread @medianewbie , I hope your DS will be ok. When the NHS works, which it mostly does in spite of the chronic underfunding etc, it is amazing and he is in good hands. Flowers
