What would you eat if you were me, one handed

RiverF · 26/06/2024 16:17

I've had a mishap and don't currently have the use of my right hand. I'm very right handed!

I live alone and this is making life very difficult, though hopefully quite short term.

I'm desperately trying not to live off junk, but can't really cook and as I can't drive, popping to the shops isn't easy either.

I have a reasonably well stocked freezer and store cupboard, full of things I usually use to cook from scratch.

What might I be able to rustle up with my left hand without causing another accident ?

almost anything it will just take much longer

SalmonWellington · 26/06/2024 16:20

Huel. Not as good as food, better than living off crisps.

sparkles79 · 26/06/2024 16:21

It's hard to say as we don't know what's in your fridge, freezer or store cupboard. Do you have a blender, mixture, food processor, toastie maker, toaster, microwave etc and the list goes on...

I can't open a crisp packet 😆 How do you do that one handed, it must be possible?

Teeth and the other hand

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 26/06/2024 16:25

Hold the bottle in the crook of your elbow and use your good hand to twist off the cap.

Can open crisps one handed by squeezing the packet till it pops, cutting with scissors or again, hold in crook of elbow and use good hand. Heck you could rip it open with your teeth easily enough.

incessantpunditry · 26/06/2024 16:26

How well do you get on with your neighbours? I am wondering whether you could get some ingredients, take them round and ask them to cook your meal for you?

Peonies12 · 26/06/2024 16:28

Do you have anyone who could cook you some simple meals that you can reheat and eat one handed?

PossumintheHouse · 26/06/2024 16:28

Can you just bung some jacket potatoes in the oven and throw on your favourite topping? Blog of butter and sprinkle of cheese/beans/insert favourite here.

spirited101 · 26/06/2024 16:31

hope you recover soon. Do you have frozen veg and rice at home, if so it is possible to have rice and veg - not saying it's easy but I have been in that situation and remember managing to cook that. Not very nice having it every night though.

Maddy70 · 26/06/2024 16:34

Id give in and get takeaways. Why make life harder for yourself.

Bananas apples porridge pots

Bluevelvetsofa · 26/06/2024 16:35

Would you be able to get some Cook meals or similar? One or two would mean some decent meals and in between you could do stuff on toast, yoghurt and fruit, porridge in the microwave, sandwiches maybe.

SheilaFentiman · 26/06/2024 16:35

Stuffed pasta. Boil water in kettle, flick hob on with left hand, stab packet with knife, peel back with left hand.

Throw in eg frozen peas for vitamins

Put sieve/colander in sink and drain.

RiverF · 26/06/2024 16:38

I'm obviously being wet, but I'm so right handed. I can't lift a saucepan or kettle safely with my left hand.

Is money tight? I would be tempted to order stuff I can bung in the oven from Cook. If you put them on a baking tray you should be able to get the out one handed.

Blouson · 26/06/2024 16:38

Just dont make any silly decisions to involve your teeth to open stuff or else you'll be spending hundreds at the dentist!

You might be able to do it with a scissors.

Actually a scissors could be handy to cut up pizza or omelette, so you could eat it with one hand.

Talipesmum · 26/06/2024 16:41

Get a small kettle, a teeny little one for just a few cups. It’s less heavy to lift. Also an electric jar opener - my MIL has this and it’s great.

Left handed scissors!

I should have read the whole thread before replying, scissors don't really work in the wrong hand. Sorry.

ref getting to the shops - get a supermarket delivery in, you say you can't drive but they can come to you!

Blouson · 26/06/2024 16:46

Breadsticks

IIRC Ocado are the only ones who will actually bring in bags for OP rather than stand there with unbagged items in crates whilst she struggles to unload.

But supermarkets may have got better

anicecuppateaa · 26/06/2024 16:48

Whoosh some ready meals/ snacks and put your feet up!

Changed18 · 26/06/2024 16:49

Pasta and pesto. Egg on toast. If you really can’t lift a saucepan with your left hand this is the chance to practice.
