What would you eat if you were me, one handed

RiverF · 26/06/2024 16:17

I've had a mishap and don't currently have the use of my right hand. I'm very right handed!

I live alone and this is making life very difficult, though hopefully quite short term.

I'm desperately trying not to live off junk, but can't really cook and as I can't drive, popping to the shops isn't easy either.

I have a reasonably well stocked freezer and store cupboard, full of things I usually use to cook from scratch.

What might I be able to rustle up with my left hand without causing another accident ?

If you can't actually use your left hand either I think you're going to struggle, as presumably you can't use a knife either if you can't even manage a kettle?

SheilaFentiman · 26/06/2024 16:49

You could always fill a saucepan with cold water from a jug and fish out pasta with a straining spoon ?

Mrsjayy · 26/06/2024 16:51

RiverF · 26/06/2024 16:22

I can't open a crisp packet 😆 How do you do that one handed, it must be possible?

Hold it in your teeth and hand and open

Buy Pringles and stab the foil at the top 😀

Ditto Peperami. Add cherry tomatoes for balance.

I think if you can’t lift a kettle there’s more to this than a single injury. Have you told the Dr how weak your left hand is?

newnamethanks · 26/06/2024 16:55

Me too. Hand operated on today and out of commission for minimum 4 weeks. Have got hard boiled eggs, cheese slices, ham and beef slices, tomatoes, beetroot, lettuce, rocket, radishes, celeriac remoulade, olives. Toast. Waitrose and Sainsbury's will pack on doorstep, my shopping goes into wheeled trolley.

maw1681 · 26/06/2024 16:57

Bag of frozen Mediterranean vegetables in the oven with a tin of chickpeas thrown in, or diced chicken. You can cook enough for a few meals all at once.
Eat with microwave rice or couscous

PossumintheHouse · 26/06/2024 16:58

How about tortilla chips and dips? All you need to do is open the crisp packet and rip off plastic lids to open salsa, guac, sour cream...

It's not so much that it's weak, but that I'm incompetent with it. You don't realise how much you use your other hand to steady things until you can't either.

Houmous with pitta bread, ready chopped carrots?
M&S ready made salads, healthy and delicious!

NewMe2024 · 26/06/2024 16:59

I’d get some boxed salads and ready meals and just eat those for a while if you can afford it.

Choccyp1g · 26/06/2024 16:43

I should have read the whole thread before replying, scissors don't really work in the wrong hand. Sorry.

As a left handed person who has used right handed implements and tools all my life, they can work.

Appalonia · 26/06/2024 17:00

And sorry, OP, this must be really hard. X

Meadowwild · 26/06/2024 17:03

I'd buy reasonably healthy ready meals - most supermarkets do good Indian, Chinese and English dishes. You can put them in the microwave one-handed. Or Cook frozen food - bake in the oven.

You could probably manage to cook scrambled eggs on toast or ham and cheese on toast using cheese slices, with baby tomatoes and bagged salad.

Toooldtocareanymore · 26/06/2024 17:07

I think that could be really difficult because you sound very right handed so even buttering toast with wrong hand sounds like it would be real trial. I can't see why you shouldn't be able to lift a kettle though - don't fill it, or put a pot on stovetop and fill from a jug , just watch what you are doing. So looks like you are down to hummus and breadsticks , fruit ( not ones you need to peel), cheese, cherry tomatoes, anything you can bung in oven or microwave , maybe some chicken or similar have you anything like salmon in your freezer , drizzle some pesto over ( if you can get jar open) and let it cool eat it cold - at least the weather is warm. have you a rice cooker or slow cooker you can put items into? any frozen stir fry veg you could do in a pan?

C152 · 26/06/2024 17:10

Porridge, noodles, stir fry with ready chopped vegetables and meat...although even instant noodles will require you to be able to pour a kettle with your left hand, so you may be restricted to fresh fruit, veg and humous, bread and ready-meals. If possible, I'd see a physiotherapist/occupational therapist about some exercises to improve your use of your left hand.

spikeandbuffy · 26/06/2024 17:11

Have you got a george for grill or similar?
You could put a seasoned chicken breast on that and microwave steam veg pack/rice/frozen mash etc

Traybakes but if you can order the lightweight foil trays from Amazon could work

Slow cooker?

Microwave jacket potatoes

Failing that I would ask a neighbour, I would happily pour water/kettle/help cook

Takoneko · 26/06/2024 17:13

If you can buy a cheap rice cooker you can make some good one handed meals. put in rice, water, top with protein and veggies and set it to cook.

I do one where in a bowl (or even in a freezer bag) I mix some soy sauce, honey, garlic and ginger with some diced chicken breast. You can add frozen veggies too. Put the chicken, veggies and sauce on top of the rice and water in the rice cooker and cook.

You can do variations on this with gochujang paste in for a Korean twist. I top the Korean one with cheese after it’s finished cooking and then pop the lid back on to melt the cheese.

I also sometimes chuck in Mexican seasoned chicken and canned corn or beans.

Scissors.

AffIt · 26/06/2024 17:16

As an accident-prone right-handed person who is no stranger to slings, plaster casts etc, you'd be amazed by how quickly your brain will switch sides.

Yes, your right hand will most likely always be your stronger side, but you do adjust remarkably quickly.

Needs must when the devil drives, as they say.

Moier · 26/06/2024 17:17

Do an on line shop/ delivery for ready meals.Pop in microwave.
Orcado do M& S and so much variety.
Italian.
Chinese.
Indian.
Sausage n mash.
Cottage pie.
Etc etc.
I have had to do this so many many times.. being severely disabled.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2024 17:19

I wonder if you could use left-handed scissors?

AmelieTaylor · 26/06/2024 17:20

SheilaFentiman · 26/06/2024 16:47

IIRC Ocado are the only ones who will actually bring in bags for OP rather than stand there with unbagged items in crates whilst she struggles to unload.

But supermarkets may have got better

Tesco have been brilliant through out! I had an accident 3 years ago, have Tesco delivery almost every week, only had 2-3 less than helpful drivers.

Darkbutstarrynight · 26/06/2024 17:27

Make hot drinks in the microwave likewise you can cook pasta in there. If you are using the kettle only put enough water in there for 1 cup. Put that water in the kettle with lightweight cup or jug rather than take the kettle to the tap. Put chopping board on a wet dishcloth so it doesn't slide and you will be able to chop roughly. Anything in a pan use slotted spoon to take things out then when the pan is cold you can slide it along the surface to empty into the sink
