When you went to school with a celebrity and they lie about their story

I was listening to a pop star who was being interviewed and heard them tell some blatant lies about their background.

They claimed to never have gone to drama school or had any industry connections and miraculously was scouted.

I know this to be a complete lie. I was so surprised as to why they would lie this way. It makes no sense. It's been 20 years. No one cares that much so why lie... ?

I guess they were trying to flog something so maybe it the 'struggle story' sells better

This has happened to me, but they are celebrities, who were 20 the year I was 20, and are now 5 years younger than me 🙄

That sort of thing happened a lot in WW2 with the women who came over as refugees with their families but minus any identity papers. My Polish grandmother had ten years knocked off her age on her passport and naturalisation certificate (they were all doing it apparently), but the family all knew her true age. And when she got disgruntled at losing ten years worth of pension they weren’t sympathetic. 😂

To be fair, she could get away with it. She died at 102, having missed out on a Royal birthday card.

I always swore Jennifer Anniston was older than me and on TV while I was at school, but I'm now a year older than her.

She doesn't appear the type to lie so it shows we can get dates wrong etc even though we think it's true

My dad had no idea when he was born….neither the year or month.
When my parents decided to go abroad and needed a passport they applied to the Irish Embassy and they didn’t have a birth certificate for him.
We couldn’t find a baptismal certificate so the local priest wrote one out on the say so of his sisters who thought he was born after the harvest and about x year.
Im sure they were about 10 years out as he looked so much older than they said and there’s definitely something weird going on with his birth as there were two different names on his probate. Think they’re hiding something there.

Would most people actually care, though? Yes, if somebody leads you to believe they're 21, when they're only 16; or if they claim to be 55 and they're actually 80 (with extremely good genes and/or extensive skincare routines)... but if you thought your well-known significant other was 42 (public age) and they happen to be 46, is that actually important; as long as they haven't deliberately sought to deceive you personally?

On the flip side of what OP says, it’s also scary to think that if you became famous you may have people who don’t even know you making up shit, or someone who hated you in school 20 years ago going to the press with stories of how awful you were!

Yes. My general understanding is that back in the day almost all actresses deducted 7 years from their actual age, to extend their employability. But then maybe they don't or can't any more, with the internet... A lot of those of my general vintage look as if they are far older than their stated age, and certainly far older than I do. I am often shocked when I look them up. It's a tough gig.

My daughters were in the same school, one year above and one year below, as a boy who was a known bully.

When said boy became famous in a boy band they started telling the press how they were bullied at school and had a bad time which was a total lie. He made lots of children's lives miserable.

Oh no, you’re all good. I was in a Romanian orphanage in the 80’s and ‘adopted’ in 1989, but as there was a surge of international adoptions, lots of us were just sold and given away without any paperwork. Then any existing paperwork we have tried to get over the years was allegedly destroyed during the overturn of the government. My adoptive parents just made up a random date of birth for me on a new birth certificate once I was in Russia. It is what it is and I was one of the lucky ones, so… There are hundreds of others just like me.

I think I probably project on people who deliberately change their DOB though because I can’t fathom why they’d do that (yes, I am aware it’s to get work etc).

Shitting hell, that is mind blowing.
