Did you have it crowned? What tooth was it? Thank you for replying!

Upper and lower molars, one broke after about 20 years and is now missing, one was crowned at about 16/17 years and the last one is still going strong because it is over the missing one and has nothing to ‘break’ on

everytime i go to the dentist he really ums and ahs about crowning it

they were done during and after pregnancies and i have three children from 21 to 25. I was probably about 30 when i had my first root canal….without anesthesia as i was pregnant 😀

Thank you for this - I am in sort of similar position! I have an 18 month old and 2 back molars needed root canals I had one pulled due to the agony and the second I am due to have the root canal on 2nd July! This is reassuring thank you very much

No I don't think it has a crown. It's 2nd pre molar on the bottom

whowhatwerewhy · 22/06/2024 10:31

Around 30 years 😱 front tooth had a veneer on it around 25 years only due to discoloured filling.

GoodVibesHere · 22/06/2024 10:34

Mine lasted 20 years, no crown

It's an upper, 5th one along from the front

GoodVibesHere · 22/06/2024 11:48

It broke after 20 years and I had to have it extracted

winewolfhowls · 22/06/2024 11:52

About 18mths sadly, but I was warned that it was in a difficult place. Had an implant there after an extraction.

Ssmiler · 22/06/2024 11:53

My front tooth (upper) had root canal 42 years ago and it’s still strong and no issues at all. It was not crowned but I had it veneered for cosmetic reasons 22 years ago.
I have a pre molar that was done 23 years ago. It was crowned and I’ve had no trouble with it either
I do wear a bite guard religiously every night as I would be included to clench or grind - this would be advised if you are the same
Good luck

Ssmiler · 22/06/2024 11:58

The only other thing to think of is if you are having to have this work done privately and with a root canal specialist it is pricy when you also include the cost of the crown.

One of my friends weighed that up against the cost of an implant, and taking into account the risk of a root canal failing (though less likely if a good specialist is doing it), she decided she’d rather pay for an implant with the better guarantee of long lasting success

just something else to consider or discuss with your dentist

BrokenWing · 22/06/2024 12:01

2nd molar, lasted 14 months then extracted. No crown as it had been filled too many times before, was too near gum line and after they did the root canal they couldn’t fit one. Think they struggled to get all the pulp out too and it continued to decay inside. It was ok during those 14 months, but pain came back and agreed just to pull it.

It is an unknown whether yours will be successful or not and last longer, but if I could afford it I would give it a go. The procedure is long but not painful, the dentist used a rubber wedge to keep my mouth open which saved on the jaw ache, I could have easily dozed off during it!

GentleSloth · 22/06/2024 14:07

Thankfully I am NHS so only costing band 3

25 years, no crown, top 2nd upper molar on both sides. When they were replaced 5 years ago one failed immediately and the other is still OK. I still have the broken tooth one side as I am unsure what to do with it.

I do now wear a guard at night.

BillySea · 22/06/2024 14:21

Upper front tooth, done 14 years ago due to falling over and landing on my face and tooth coming out through my lip. Had it put back in and root canal. Did get warned at the time it may not last but it's still there and pretty solid. No veneer or cap

BobbyBiscuits · 22/06/2024 14:23

I've got one in the second from the back, bottom left. It is still ok, but there is gum disease round it so it's a bit of a problem tooth. None of my others have gum disease. It has a silver crown on.
I've no regrets about getting it as that tooth gave me so much pain for many years! I've had it for 15 years. It was done private as the NHS dentist said it was too complex for them to do it! So it was pretty expensive. I now no longer have an NHS dentist, like most people. 🙁

ilovebagpuss · 22/06/2024 14:42

Lower first molar a hideous gold crown but my dentist assured me it would last longer than a white one, which it has, no problems and been about 10 years now.

tobee · 22/06/2024 14:48

41 years. Front tooth no crown. Bleached instead. Tooth cracked earlier this year and am in process of getting an implant

Balloonhearts · 22/06/2024 14:53

18 years and counting. Has a crown on it, upper 1st molar. I have 2 others but they are fairly recent so time will tell.

BettyBootsie · 22/06/2024 15:48

I had a recurring abscess resulting in a root canal about 15 years ago on my upper front left incisor - no crown or veneer, but it did look quite grey. Dentist suggested trying stuffing the empty space in the tooth with white filling and it made such a massive difference. I think the "hollowness" is what made it look grey so the white filling just seemed to shine through from underneath. Still going strong now.
