What is the best excuse a friend has given you for not meeting up? I have a doozy.W

I have a friend who has told me she can't meet for a while because her 22 year old daughter has just started a Keto diet, and she needs to be at home to cook for her!

I feel slightly insulted that she could not come up with a better excuse not to meet! 😋

😂Or watch paint dry!

I've never heard the wall one before 😂😂! Howling. I need to get that into conversation.

@AtomicBlondeRose I could totally understand the cat one. I wasn't meeting anyone but came across a cat asleep on the path right next too the curb, I honestly thought it was dead.

But no it just looked at me and went back to sleep, just a strange place for a cat to sleep. Was then worried someone would trip over the cat

SuuzeeeQ · 20/06/2024 18:41

I haven’t washed my hair tonight

and

The children need downtime, they have leisure time stress.

same friend.

sumayyah · 20/06/2024 18:53

Not a friend but a colleague who's excuse for not turning up to work was because there was a spider on her doorstep so she was too afraid to leave
She had no ready reason for why she didn't use the backdoor instead of why she didn't call to let anyone know

One of my sixth formers sent me a Teams message on her way to college - “sorry im going be late to your lesson. saw a cat” with a photo of said cat

That's something my daughter would do
She takes daily cat I met on my travel to someone she met in a pharmacy lol

I am (blessedly) now in a non student facing role in an FE college but I worked in a university for years and the non-attendance emails I received were a highlight. I've been sent photos of flat tyres, various injuries, and someone's manky tonsils.

My favourite was simply "sorry I did not attend - I was having diarrhoea". I mean... there's no arguing with that, is there? English was not their first language and I remember wishing someone had taught them the phrase "under the weather" 😂

I once emailed my tutor to say I was ill and elaborated no further. Not sure if they would even have a clue what pityriasis rosea (a skin rash) is!

I had a friend who said that she was unable to meet up as planned because she had spent the night in a room with bad feng shui and it had unsettled her aura 🙄

😂

Had a cancellation from a family friend the morning of my wedding because ‘there weren’t any trains from her town to town of wedding’. They didn’t mean on that day, they were claiming there wasn’t any route that could
get her there

No reply when I pointed out that I lived in the same town, and often got the train to wedding town.

Again if it was true it would be info you had before the morning of the wedding!

PancakeClock · 20/06/2024 19:12

A friend once cancelled coming out for dinner last minute because there was an issue with the mains in her area and she had no water at home.

I thought it would come across a bit challenging to ask why that meant she couldn't go out and it was a group thing so the rest of us just went anyway, but I'd love to know the thought process behind that one!

Winterysun · 20/06/2024 19:22

A friend texted saying she couldn't come round because she'd been on a work training course, drank too much coffee and had a ''coffee hangover headache'!

This was AFTER she'd confirmed the day before she was coming. So I'd bought pizzas, made dessert and chilled the prosecco. She wasn't that apologetic either, needless to say I wasn't happy!

That’s awful. I had a friend bail on me for my wedding the day before for no real reason. I never spoke to her again.

Funkyslippers · 20/06/2024 19:41

Invited a friend round for lunch. She said she'd be at mine at 11am. I told her I had to go out at 1. She rang me at 11.15am to say she was just leaving her house (1 hour drive). She'd been delayed as a new neighbour had popped round to say hello and she didn't want to be rude by telling her she needed to go out! Needless to say she's no longer my friend

Saytheyhear · 20/06/2024 19:51

I wonder how these let downs managed zoom requests during lockdowns?

Can't use the 'I'm out at the moment' excuse too many times then could they!

There is nothing worse than an unsettled aura….

A friend used to teach me ukulele over Skype. He once didn't answer when I tried calling him. He was on holiday and forgot to tell me the previous week

Sharontheodopolodous · 20/06/2024 20:33

Not a friend but my flaky cousin

We didn't really get on with each other (no real reason-she was 10 years older than me and we had little in common)

We agreed she'd come to me so I could do her hair

Fine-until 15 minutes after the time, she messaged to say she couldn't make it as her brother had been arrested

I knew she wasn't going to make it as she was as flaky as fuck,so I went out shopping with dd

When I got back, she'd sent me another message saying she'd be in touch to rearrange

I said that it was fine and to let me know when was best for her

She never did

Less than an hour after she sent me that message, shed gone for a nap and never woke up

(And it turned out,she had told me the truth-hed been arrested for child abuse porn and is waiting for a trial date, the dirty bastard)

"I do my hoovering on Tuesday afternoons"

Mum, is that you?!

dizzydizzydizzy · 20/06/2024 20:48

Friend, when I had a broken leg, "sorry I can't take you out because I have run out of petrol and I am too small to fill up the car myself" (she's about 5'2"). I literally couldn't do anything by myself for many months and I was reliant on friends.

In my school the 6th formers have to fill in a slip to explain lateness that’s then handed to the firm tutor. My three favourites: student who opened the door to leave to see a massive spider dangling and then had to ring her dad to come back from work to remove it. Second student just wrote ‘Cycled really slowly.’ and the third said they’d woken up in the morning to find the lead on their roof had been stolen in the night!

LandHo · 19/06/2024 16:19

@KreedKafer Though some (not all) older people get tired quite easily! Especially if some underlying medical issues. Speaking from experience! It’s nice (and better) to spread it out over the week. Of course there are some naturally more energetic older people, but not everyone is ….

They’ve been friends for 60 years and she’s always been like that. It’s nothing to do with her health or energy levels.

The number of dogs being sick and causing sixth form lateness is unbelievable! Ditto keys being lost. They also like to send me photos of traffic jams as proof that it’s traffic making them late - to be fair we’re in a town with outrageous traffic issues so I’d always believe that regardless.

My first boyfriend stood me up ( going back to the 1970s here).
He rang me from a call box a few days later to say that a picture had fallen off his bedroom wall as he slept, hit him on the head and rendered him unconscious for 2 days.
I believed him 🤣🤣

🤣🤣🤣

Yes,she very sadly died

We where not close and she had her faults, but there is no way I'd have wished that on her

Her (then) teenage dd found her-shed gone to wake her up as 'mum won't sleep tonight if shes not woken up now'

Very sad all round

beckybarefoot · 20/06/2024 21:30

my sister in law would always cancel because of a 'migraine'. and i know all you migraine sufferes out there will tell me 'you dont understand how a bad a migraine is until you'ge had one'. i am a chronic migraine sufferer and have been for many years and when i have an attack i am out of action for days.

she will cancel, they spend the entire evening posting rubbish on social media.. to be honest, we've now stopped engaging with her because of it
