I've just had a massive declutter

Long time overdue and I said last night to myself tomorrow I will have a big declutter.
So since 9.30 this morning I got stuck in.
Room by room draw by draw
I got brutal today.
Box's and bags that have just been sitting for months have been tipped.
Draws being pulled out and emptied without thinking should I keep that.
No looking through it just binned.
Gone through my clothes surprisingly I only wear 7 outfits.
Bagged the rest and sat them outside.
Huge sign saying free they are now gone.
Along with tables chairs bedding kitchen stuff.
Other crap still a few bits left if not gone by tonight tip tomorrow.
Two runs to the tip so far.
I'm surprised at the crap I had and didn't need.
No storing in boxes I just binned and tipped.
I'm shocked with the space I have now.
I had 14 cups and mugs now I own 4.
3 duvet I mean why I use one.
A lovely couple came by and had them from the front garden.
I don't know what came over me to do it I was getting overwhelmed with clutter.
My friend said to sell what I don't want and to store the rest but to me it's still there in boxes and waiting for it to be sold.
I did read on here a comment of someone that got brutal with decluttering.
So I thought I'll do the same.
It feels so good to have soooo much less now.
I now have just a kettle on my kitchen side unlike a few hours ago 😂.
I still have one more tip run to do but gosh I feel free.
Everything I own now I can put in to my car.
I'm now a minimalist and I will try to stay as one with no more shopping unless I really need something.

@Passiflora2 I'm in Mid Sussex. I've been a cleaner for a few years and this seemed to be an extension of that. I'm a very tidy and organised person. I did do an internet course but to be honest its mostly common sense. I love decluttering, it's very rewarding
I get clients by advertising on FB local groups.

Thanks. That's helpful!

frustratedashell · 19/06/2024 12:40

@Sunshineandrainbow I'm based in Mid Sussex. I understand that it's difficult to let friends in to help you. I would advise you to tackle one cupboard/drawer or room at a time. Be ruthless! Have a bag for recycling, one for rubbish and one for charity shop.
If you have a week off that's a great opportunity to get stuck in.
Build in some rewards for getting it done.eg cake and coffee at a garden centre. Good luck

I LOVE this OP! Like a previous poster I got a secondhand thrill from reading your post! I think you’re absolutely right, you just have to go for it. I seem to take out at least three bin bags a week (mostly to charity or recycling), but can’t ever see what actual difference it makes.

You got rid of the sofa? And the table and chairs?

Yes I did a small 2 seater that was not being used at all.
And a small breakfast table and stalls that was put in the spare room.
And 2 wooden chairs that was in there not being used.

I'd love to do this. I have so many clothes/boots/trainers.
And a husband who has a lot of "treasures"...

Thankyou that's really helpful.

Kitchen is by far my worst place which I will be tackling that week. And have just arranged to meet a friend on the Tuesday so that was good timing. I am home alone for the week which also helps.

My final push I got fed up with it.
Things just sitting and not being used it was getting me down.
I have 2 weeks off work and that night I just thought screw it Chuck the lot and be done.
Instead of taking weeks and looking at things having thanks for it sorting it etc.
Boxing it up just wasn't gonna work as it was still there just in box's.
But came across a comment on a thread that said she just got brutal and none stop till it was done.
That was it I think that was my light bulb moment.
So got up and started cleaning out the next morning.
No thanks no sorting just knuckled down.
The night before I put all important paperwork in my backpack with my laptop and chargers so that was safe.
Got the bin bags and bags 4 life and started to fill them without any guilt or thinking I should keep it or look first.
Best thing I've done.
I don't miss anything.
I will stay a minimalist.
I didn't want to pay someone to come and help when I wanted gone but most likely would have to have a chat about do you want this how about this let's pack that let's sort and store that.
That to me is keeping clutter in my life.
So got brutal instead.

I can feel your energy!

Fear is stopping me.

I know I attach too many memories to things.

Im looking though and imaging how it’d feel.

Fear stops us from a lot of things.
If your not ready to do it then don't .
Uncluttered home is an uncluttered mind.
And one thing I did notice as I was doing it all this stuff didn't mean anything to me if it did I would be using it.
One of the worst mind set is to think it might come in handy you will never get rid because it might come in handy iyswim.
I'm not sentimental but I'll always have memories.
Like if your home burned down you would just be grateful your family got out safe every thing else can be replaced.
Harsh but it was a point I read on on a thread from someone that was decluttering.
Just sitting and looking around in your home knowing all the cupboards are full but you ain't using any of it.
Ornaments I call dust collector's.

You are right. I have a folder with all my important documents sorted already.

And I do agree about my house being the state of my mind.

Sunshineandrainbow · 19/06/2024 17:38

You make some really good points op.

I will keep reading gearing myself up fro my week off work. You don't live in Buckinghamshire do you? 😂

God it’s so true about your house being your state of mind. Mine says a lot about me at the moment.

Its going to be a long weekend but i think its the only way tbh i just hope we have good weather so i can put loads out the front for free.

RabbitsRock · 09/03/2025 21:15

Had a deep clean last week which spurred me on to make a start on our bedroom. There’s a long way to go but I have got rid of some more clothes & sorted a fair pile to try on & possibly sell. Sorted out several piles downstairs today, including stuff that’s been stored ontop of the magazine rack rather than in it! May tackle my recipe pile in a bit. I keep so many but tend to cook the same few dishes. Taking some magazines to the doctors surgery tomorrow. Currently wondering if anyone would buy a silver plated photo frame? Never used.

Pinkdumpling · 07/05/2026 19:07

Ive been a minimalist for years and love it.
Some would call me an exstream one but i dont care.
My kitchen only has a kettle on show.
My home looks empty not even a pitcher on the walls, to me thats clutter, i dont own a tv either.
