I've just had a massive declutter

Long time overdue and I said last night to myself tomorrow I will have a big declutter.
So since 9.30 this morning I got stuck in.
Room by room draw by draw
I got brutal today.
Box's and bags that have just been sitting for months have been tipped.
Draws being pulled out and emptied without thinking should I keep that.
No looking through it just binned.
Gone through my clothes surprisingly I only wear 7 outfits.
Bagged the rest and sat them outside.
Huge sign saying free they are now gone.
Along with tables chairs bedding kitchen stuff.
Other crap still a few bits left if not gone by tonight tip tomorrow.
Two runs to the tip so far.
I'm surprised at the crap I had and didn't need.
No storing in boxes I just binned and tipped.
I'm shocked with the space I have now.
I had 14 cups and mugs now I own 4.
3 duvet I mean why I use one.
A lovely couple came by and had them from the front garden.
I don't know what came over me to do it I was getting overwhelmed with clutter.
My friend said to sell what I don't want and to store the rest but to me it's still there in boxes and waiting for it to be sold.
I did read on here a comment of someone that got brutal with decluttering.
So I thought I'll do the same.
It feels so good to have soooo much less now.
I now have just a kettle on my kitchen side unlike a few hours ago 😂.
I still have one more tip run to do but gosh I feel free.
Everything I own now I can put in to my car.
I'm now a minimalist and I will try to stay as one with no more shopping unless I really need something.

Well done OP.

I love to declutter and also just put things out for people to take for free.

We recently gave away a load of furniture that had been sitting in our garage, plus bags of books and clothes.

It's great to have the space back and also nice to give things to people who will appreciate them.

EmeraldRoulette · 16/06/2024 13:32

@positivewings I like arty, comforting, curated clutter if you see what I mean?

I don't have the space for it now.

General clutter always bugs me but it was only last week I got the energy to tackle it.

After being inspired by OP, I'm now thinking I could get rid of the dish rack by the sink if I had the discipline to wash, dry, and put away immediately.

Everyone I've mentioned this to said "but why does ordinary kitchen stuff bother you?". It's because I can see it from my sofa and worktable and there's no way around that with the layout. In a separate kitchen I don't think I'd mind.

I'm off to figure this out now.

somethingwickedlivesnextdoor · 16/06/2024 18:03

Wow. It does sound quite extreme, but it sounds like you feel freer and lighter? Enjoy your new space!!

boxsetqueen · 17/06/2024 10:26

Inspired by your post OP I've just gotten rid of three binbags of clothing and just STUFF we no longer need. Feels good.

Kinda what I have been doing today a free car boot sale outside my home.
So much gone and I'm quite happy with knowing it's going to be used.

We have done this - just put things outside for free - it all goes.

It wouldn't where I live, the parish council would be breathing down my neck within 2 hours 👀

mathanxiety · 19/06/2024 02:03

Hats off to you, OP!

Amazing work - well done for just going for it.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 19/06/2024 03:39

I hope your energy is infectious!

Im way too attached to sentimental stuff. A single box of photos sounds impossible.

what finally gave you the push? I want that lighter feeling too!

@RabbitsRock I sell packages of 3, 6, 9 and 12 hours.
3 hours is £120. 12 hours is £408.

How did you start and how do you get work? This is very interesting. Which area are you in?
I am a hoarder and desperately need someone like you.
Well done OP!

Passiflora2 · 19/06/2024 04:49

Just want to say too that Freecycle is a great way to get rid of stuff.

Where are you based? I’d love 12 hours of decluttering.

Hazelville · 19/06/2024 05:26

OP I’m very impressed and would love to do this. I am always taking things to the charity shop but don’t really see the difference. Well done for your brutal approach.

I have looked at paying but the websites I have looked at seem more like organisation help than decluttering.

Are you in Buckinghamshire at all?

Some friends say they would help me but it's just the thought of letting them in as no one really comes in my house.

I have a week off work soon to do it and need to get some motivation.

I live opposite a parish councillor. It would take seconds, seconds I tell you, before they 'just popped over to mention it'.

Passiflora2 · 19/06/2024 09:05

A family member is absolutely brilliant at de cluttering and organising. She needs extra money so wondering how she should offer her services?

MissDecember · 19/06/2024 10:47

Changing bedding this morning was easy as i only have 2 sets now one on one off.
No washing up as i wash up when ive finished anything due to having less.
No mess no clutter its bliss In fact i enjoy being home now its more relaxing.
Cleaning is so easy now just a quick sweep and mop up wipe kitchen sides down im done.
I wake up now and everything is spotless.
My friend that said box and sell is now going to do the brutal de-clutter this week end no stop until it done.

I put most out front free to anyone.
Alot as gone now.
Id rather take it to the tip whats left as i can be dealing with all that faffing about when i can do it in one load a time to the tip and be done with it.

So you’d rather it ends up in landfill?

Meadowwild · 19/06/2024 10:54

Well done, OP. I read a post like yours and think it is genuinely a life goal for me. I hate clutter but never have the headspace to sort it. Doing this is up there on my bucket list of massive achievements.

You have my total respect.

You've inspired me!

Birmingham. She is honestly amazing. I'm sure she would travel for a weekend blitz. PM me if you are interested.

what finally gave you the push? I want that lighter feeling too!

My final push I got fed up with it.
Things just sitting and not being used it was getting me down.
I have 2 weeks off work and that night I just thought screw it Chuck the lot and be done.
Instead of taking weeks and looking at things having thanks for it sorting it etc.
Boxing it up just wasn't gonna work as it was still there just in box's.
But came across a comment on a thread that said she just got brutal and none stop till it was done.
That was it I think that was my light bulb moment.
So got up and started cleaning out the next morning.
No thanks no sorting just knuckled down.
The night before I put all important paperwork in my backpack with my laptop and chargers so that was safe.
Got the bin bags and bags 4 life and started to fill them without any guilt or thinking I should keep it or look first.
Best thing I've done.
I don't miss anything.
I will stay a minimalist.
I didn't want to pay someone to come and help when I wanted gone but most likely would have to have a chat about do you want this how about this let's pack that let's sort and store that.
That to me is keeping clutter in my life.
So got brutal instead.

You got rid of the sofa? And the table and chairs?

frustratedashell · 19/06/2024 12:34

@Passiflora2 I'm in Mid Sussex. I've been a cleaner for a few years and this seemed to be an extension of that. I'm a very tidy and organised person. I did do an internet course but to be honest its mostly common sense. I love decluttering, it's very rewarding
