A 'love you to the moon and back' light from my mum.
A musical box from my mum
A cross stitched hedgehog from DP.
A hedgehog mug my children bought me for mothers day. This contains loom bad bracelets they made me.
Air pods
A felted Hedgehog in a little wooden box, made my DP.
A lamp
A little Buddha in a bag from my mum to remind me of something when I was little.
A coaster
A little sign DD (10) made me which says 'believe in yourself' which she made for my first day in my job.
A wrapper I need to throw away.

From this you would assume my favourite animal is hedgehogs. Its not. But a hedgehog changed my life and without that hedgehog I wouldn't be with DP or have my 2 youngest children. So it is a reminder of how far I have come.

I am also sentimental. My bedside table is huge but full of things that have made me happy, when I am sad or don't want to get out of bed all I have to do is reach over and look at how wonderful my life is.

Please tell us about how a hedgehog changed your life

A nightstand? Where do you live - Downton Abbey?

I thought it was an American term. I have a bedside table.
Usually on it at night, kindle, glasses, tissues, mug with dregs of cup of tea, radio/alarm, hand cream.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 11/06/2024 23:46

@comeondover it is silly really. When I met my DP now I was in a really bad situation. I was at a pub with my friends who all knew him. We all walked home together and trailed off one by one. He lived just past me so it ended up just him and me.
I won't go on and tell you the situation I was in but it was awful.
I don't believe in 'signs' or religion but about a week before I was sitting in my garden I whispered 'God I need to know what to do, I need a sign' heard a scurry and saw a hedgehog. Thought nothing of it.

When DP ( not at the time) was walking me home we saw a hedgehog.
Me in my desperation took that as a sign that he was the one who would make it all better.

12 years later I have a wonderful life with a man who won't even raise his voice at me. He stood by me while he was being stalked by a man with a crow bar (my ex)
I asked him to walk away and stay safe. What he did is got me a contract secret phone, he made my best friend aware of everything going on and he formed a support network for me. He took on my daughter, who is now 16 and they have an amazing relationship, he gave me 2 beautiful albeit crazy little girls and encouraged me to stand up for myself.

Had I not have seen that hedgehog I genuinely believe I wouldn't have allowed him to get close to me.
So the hedgehogs are a reminder to me of how far I have come. He makes me all things hedgehog not to remind me of that night and everything, he makes them to remind me of my strength that I got out and should I ever feel weak again that I am not.

I don't know if any of this makes any sense but I will not say DP changed my life. Me believing in a spiky rodent did. So all over my home there are hedgehogs. In my home they symbolise strength. In my home they symbolise bravery. In my home they symbolise new life.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/06/2024 20:40

Sunrise alarm clock.

Earbuds.

Glasses.

As of Friday evening, a nightguard to try and stop me knackering my teeth any more than I have done already (when the dentist said 'Do you have a stressful job at all?' I almost woke up properly from the lovely rest of not actually having to talk, type or think for five minutes whilst she scraped away a bit of tartar).

I can't stand having too much stuff around me.

Night guard really helps, I've used one since I was 12
Had an operation and the minute I woke up I asked for it Grin I wake up clashing my teeth together

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 12/06/2024 01:14

Carafe on a coaster, J.R.R. Tolkien silver coin, small lamp, iPad and Apple pencil, notepad and pen, small battery operated nightlight that looks like bread popping out of a toaster and a stack of books.

RustyBear · 12/06/2024 01:27

To my right: Charger stand with iPhone & watch, another older iphone that’s just for music & audio books, Bluetooth speaker, glasses case, small battery night light, iPad & Apple Pencil , credit card wallet, water carafe & glass.
To my left: Lamp, another glasses case, kindle & charger, tissue box, vase of flowers, two Dartmouth pottery swan vases, bowl of lavender, tiny knitted teddy bear (the original Rusty Bear) in a rocking chair, tin of Lush Karma perfume.

UncomfortableSilence · 12/06/2024 07:29

@puddingandsun
Mainly for my insomnia, I spray it on my feet and legs. I've found it helps me get back to sleep quicker rather than laying awake for hours when I wake at night. I read about it on here.

Giggorata · 12/06/2024 08:00

I have bedside drawers, the kind that have millions of small drawers for all the stuff.
On them are: lamps, books, a shrine, iPad, charger and a ceramic hand for rings.(when I remember to take them off)

Babadook76 · 11/06/2024 21:11

50 newly hatch axolotls 👀

Really?! Oh I'm envious... but 50? Wow Shock

Catsmere · 12/06/2024 11:25

I have two bedside chests of drawers, and the same things are on them most of the time. On one side, a lamp, two small framed pictures, my pill case, my cats' pill bottles, my watch, earplugs and a necklace. On the other, another lamp, my wifi dongle at night, water bottle, tube of hand cream, lip balm, phone and a book. Occasionally there will be a cat bumbling around investigating everything.
