Also, again not at all suggesting this was the case here, just for info, drinking copious water as one exerts oneself in the heat enables profuse sweating which in turn helps reduce the body’s core temperature . If one drinks a lot of alcohol beachside on a Mediterranean holiday high in summer, whether you then go for a walk or just keep sun bathing, heatstroke can be more likely to occur as alcohol is dehydrating to the body. Hope this helps someone in future.

In the Times article, it said that he was found lying on a rock eith his knees up, indicating he was trying to follow NHS advice to lie down and elevate your legs if you feel faint or unwell, so sadly it looks like he's felt unwell, tried to sit down and try and do something to recover and just died. Maybe it was something as sudden as a stroke or heart attack.

Well as someone who's read most of the articles on this story so far (including the one above, on a different media outlet, about lying with legs elevated) I think it's now at the stage of journalists writing stories for stories sake. I mean there's guesswork and there's guesswork. It would be near impossible to lie straight on that rocky terrain.

loveyouradvice · 10/06/2024 19:07

how can they know he died at 4pm so precisely?

They don't. That's why they've only given an approximate time.

It means, I think, that the state of the body is consistent with death that afternoon, and with the timestamp of the CCTV of him coming down the slope.

That CCTV has mercifully not made it to the public domain, but a description of it has. How he appeared on it will have formed part of the post mortem considerations.

It's all part of a coroner's job. Have you never watched a crime based TV drama!?

Im not an expert by any means but can't they tell a lot from stomach contents?

Passiflora2 · 10/06/2024 17:38

I havent seen any

That doesn't mean they aren't/weren't there. Maybe they've gone now but there were graphic photos in the Greek media yesterday, you didn't have to look too hard to see them

Chenecinquantecinq · 10/06/2024 19:22

I think it's true that you can survive for quite a while with no food or water, and this makes me wonder if he suffered a stroke or a heart attack, perhaps partly as a result of the heat.
I feel so sorry for his poor family. He went too soon.

Not in those temperatures you can’t. Heat stroke kills and can be rapid. Obviously the heat also increases risk of cardiovascular events so may have been one of those but please after all this publicity don’t think the heat can’t kill fast.

how can they know he died at 4pm so precisely?

By the extent of decomposition, perhaps.

LefkaOri · 10/06/2024 19:34

I think there have been one or more deaths of army trainees in the UK from
heatstroke, very fit, young men, with enormous amounts of equipment on their backs, engaged in training exercises, died in quite a short period of time. Heatstroke can affect anyone of any age or health status if certain factors are in play, like the ambient heat of the day being high, eg 40’ is 3 degrees above human core temperature for starters.

Or is it convenient for the mayor that his island isn't under scrutiny?

I read he'd taken credit for spotting him, rather than the journalist who did.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 10/06/2024 19:59

WriterOfWrongs · 10/06/2024 17:59

The cameraman, who was interviewed pretty promptly, said he was the one who saw something and he told the mayor (beside him) and took photos so they could zoom in, and the mayor called the restaurant to check.

I believe the cameraman over the mayor on this.

I understand from ERT, the Greek channel whose crew was doing the filming from a boat 300 metres offshore yesterday morning, that someone, probably the cameraman, spotted the sunlight glinting off Dr Mosley's watch and zoomed in on it, to then see what was possibly a body. At that point, I reckon the mayor, who was on the same boat, contacted the Marina bar/restaurant and asked them to go and have a look. This would imply that the reason Dr Mosley's body hadn't been found in an earlier search was because of the way his body was positioned, and somehow hidden from view, except from a certain angle and light.

Byronada · 10/06/2024 20:07

This thread is so distasteful. What is wrong with you people. Let him rest in peace and his family grieve without this.

Allshallbewell2021 · 10/06/2024 20:12

The mayor taking credit for discovery - classic.

So sad and puzzlingly poor search criteria as this was walking distance from where he was seen by his party.

Incredibly bad luck.

greengreyblue · 10/06/2024 20:19

Lack of salts can be bad if sweating so much.crossed my mind he could have been fasting as he regularly does. Who knows?

Aquarius1234 · 10/06/2024 21:36

Interesting developments today.

@BiancaBlue I've just seen it too on twitter, awful to see but explains a lot about positioning and state of the body. It should be removed though out of respect. But know other countries do things differently.. I got used to seeing graphic stuff on middle eastern news when I lived there, as someone mentioned earlier it's horrific to see but does make you think twice more about doing stuff like this when you see the real consequences. And not the sanitised version.
Just not nice to see especially about someone you like.

I've not seen it. Sounds graphic.
So he walked a very long way apparently.

OP posts:
GreatOcean · 10/06/2024 22:29

It depends how you define 'long way'.

In teems of distance, no, even of he was walking continuously then he couldn't have walked more than 10-12km.

But, factor in the heat, and walking just one km is a very long way indeed.

That heat puts your body under huge strain.

I've seen it written again that his wife said he was feeling unwell - there's still a question for me whether he died from heat exhaustion or perhaps a heart attack.

Aquarius1234 · 10/06/2024 22:36

Well yeh long walk in peak heatwave conditions.
I could be totally wrong but I doubt he initially planned to go for a walk at that type of time.
He's not stupid and it's not fun walking when your dripping in sweat.

I don't need to see an image to understand the consequences of things. I have a very vivid imagination and good understanding. I just feel it's so unnecessary.
It's about respect and sensitivity. If I died I would not want photos of my corpse broadcast around the world. In my mind, that's taking away my dignity. If my husband or child died I wouldn't want photos of their dead bodies published on the internet. His poor family are still reeling from this and they have to deal with the knowledge that thousands of people have seen photos of his dead body in a dreadful state. That's not how he would want to be remembered or how they'd want him to be remembered.
Also many people really respected and liked him. Even if they never met him it's upsetting to see these images and hear such awful details of his final moments.

Disturbia81 · 10/06/2024 22:58

@SallyWD You don't but I think many people on this forum, on so many topics, assume the rest of the UK is as switched on and intelligent as them. They aren't

But I agree, it's so disrespectful like I said and I'm glad we live somewhere that sanitises the news. Imagine kids seeing that on the tv.

Passiflora2 · 10/06/2024 23:22

If it was your husband or father, or son it would be very very upsetting that those images had been made public. It’s disgusting that they should be published anywhere.

I haven’t seen any pictures and I will not be seeking them out but just want to say I think we are being hypocritical regarding showing pictures of MM. Dead Palestinian children’s bodies are being shown constantly at the moment . Is it fair on them ? Can you please explain to me the difference?

Bodies should not be shown on the news full stop. I don't think you'll find anyone saying oh victims of terrorism in Israel or victims of retaliation attacks are ok.
