Body found and identified.

There were entire 1000 post threads here, before the poor man's body was found, with posters banging on about how they wouldn't have let their husband walk off when he was not feeling well. It was mentioned in all the news reports of the first days of the search, and has faded out since, perhaps out of respect. But to say it was never mentioned more than once is bizarre.

Honestly there is lots of reasons it might not have been reviewed, the person who can access may not have even been on the island, the restaurant closed, it’s not like the uk, often they only open for a limited number of days.

his wife isn’t lashing out, his kids aren’t, so maybe you shouldn’t be either?

The restaurant may have been closed, what for 3 or 4 days in tourist season?! If it was closed surely the police have certain power to access footage in emergencies or do they all just sit around over there waiting for the owners to have a look?

Someone should have made scouring the very very limited cctv available a top and immediate priority. 'The restaurant may have been shut' I mean fgs. I repeat, he was visible! If that was my relative I'd be absolutely horrified that it wasn't spotted sooner.

WriterOfWrongs · 10/06/2024 09:27

Re where he was walking to, the media are (still) reporting he was going back to where they were staying, so wasn’t just going for a walk as such.

From the DM:

“Setting off with a single small bottle of water but crucially no phone, father-of-four Dr Mosley said he was heading back to the three-bedroom Merchant House apartment in Symi where they were staying with friends.”

QforCucumber · 10/06/2024 09:33

We were in Turkey last week, could see Rhodes from the beach, it was high 30's a couple of the days but with the breeze it really didn't feel like it, I think it's very easy to sit here and judge from where we are about the 'extreme heat' but honestly, without looking at the hotel board thingy we'd not have realised just how hot it actually was.

WriterOfWrongs · 10/06/2024 09:34

Previously all was confirmed is his wife saying he was “went for a walk”. Now it appears he did have a determined destination, and may have taken a very wrong turn after leaving Pedi.

That’s what The Times says today as well, but it’s only speculation.

But perhaps it isn’t speculation as all the newspapers are now saying it?

Possible it was confirmed to them by the authorities after Clare Bailey confirmed it to them.

I think he was heading back to the house and people are reading too much in to his wife's statement "he went for a walk". That could well have meant he went for a walk home. Maybe she was deliberately vague because she didn't want to go into details. I saw hundreds of people on social media saying "How could his wife let him walk home alone if he felt ill?!". I can imagine in her situation not wanting to go into detail and having her account torn to pieces.

He prob said I’m going for a walk, will see you back at the apartment.

DaisiesInTheAir · 10/06/2024 09:49

His wife's statement said he'd taken a wrong turn. He was walking back but to their house but he'd taken a much longer route than he planned to. It was just a very tragic accident rather than recklessness on his part. I'm sure he knew that a long hike in the midday sun was a bad idea, but as PP said, decision drift got the better of him.

Just to clear this up... if he'd had a reasonably new iphone it might have helped him to navigate, where I live there is often no phone reception but google maps GPS continues to update your location (maps have to be preloaded). He wouldn't have been able to make a call though. My phone works just fine in 45 degrees if it's in my pocket, not if I put it screen up in direct sun though, or lock it in the car where temps can be 60+.

So why hasn’t she said so in either of her two statements? Surely nothing can be misconstrued by saying “he was heading back to the villa”?

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 10/06/2024 09:56

Obviously we are all guessing and nobody knows but depending on what the CCTV was set to view, he could've been a tiny speck on the edge of the frame, easily overlooked until you know to look in exactly that spot.

I read that people were specifically searching the path from Pedi to Agia Marina on the Friday and were walking within a few hundred feet of his body but didn't see it. He just unluckily fell into a hard to spot area.

Efacsen · 10/06/2024 09:58

His wife's exact words yesterday

“We’re taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it. He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen by the extensive search team.”

She also said Confirming that he had been found, Bailey said she did not “know quite where to begin”

Sounds pretty ambiguous to me from someone clearly very distressed

Chenecinquantecinq · 10/06/2024 10:02

Slightly off topic but I was amazed how Iceland has excellent mobile phone service even in the most remote of areas! They also give clear advice when hiring cars etc about having adequate water/clothing when out so perhaps some good from this will be a raised awareness of what is sensible to have on you in remote areas/certain conditions.

Very sad. He seemed lovely. It did strike me that the footage of him striding along the marina there was not another soul to be seen.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 10/06/2024 10:26

Apparently The Abyss has been debunked as a translation error with it just meaning the geological term for a cave/ hole.

Chenecinquantecinq · 10/06/2024 10:28

Some of the reporting seems to suggest he accidentally took the coastal/mountain route instead of the safe route along the main road. This is some journalistic stretch by anyone’s standards for what was clearly an intelligent man. Whether he took a wrong turn when on the mountain is another matter but he clearly intentionally took the mountainous route.

Janiie · 10/06/2024 10:33

@CantDealwithChristmas what an unpleasant post. We can all wonder at his actions without insults.

'Arrogant brits'. I mean really. He made mistakes as do many, I'm not sure arrogance comes into it.

I tell you what confuses me, why the search teams didn't access any available cctv immediately. It took them 2 days to realise he'd got to Pedi and they'd been looking in the wrong place.

CantDealwithChristmas · 10/06/2024 10:35

Really? I think the Greek word used was 'varathro' which sure would be a geological term but also definitely means 'pit' / 'abyss' / hellhole. That's the sense in which it is used in the Koine Greek version of the New Testament Gospels. And, would be a bit old fashioned but could certainly be understood that way today. It's where we get English 'Barathrum' from, as per Milton and Blake.

V happy to be corrected as I got that bit about 'varathro' being the local word from my relatives back home where as you can imagine this has been a topic of some conversation (mainly along the lines of 'what was that stupid man doing out in the pitiless heat of a scorching afternoon when the rest of us typically keep to our air conditioned homes and offices like normal people?")

From what I understand, there are two paths to the Marina area at a fork in the road part-way up the mountains. One is ‘the’ path and is sign-posted. MM appears to have taken
the other path, which isn’t as an established path, and which went to the top of the mountain and over.

Yes but was this not his intention hence his wife’s comments that he made the climb!

CorylusAgain · 10/06/2024 10:37

I won't quote your post @CantDealwithChristmas because it doesn't warrant being repeated.

You no doubt live a sensible life, never taking a risk and always being on the side of righteousness.

Just a shame sensitivity isn't also one of your qualities.

Give over now. Rescuers and volunteers worked around the clock. The whole island came together in the hope of finding this man alive.

It may be a small island but the space isn't small and he was found elsewhere, and tragically not in a place easily seen, that was inhospitable with rough terrain.

You seem to want to apportion blame and criticise those who tried their best and only had the very best of intentions, and will be feeling deep sadness over the outcome.

Well, yes. He took the wrong turn.

But I was agreeing with you that it seems he deliberately took the mountainous route… and then got lost.
