People mentioned a few survival stories further back when you look them up they had water with them. The woman lost on hike in USA had 5 litres for what she anticipated was a 4 hour hike. When she fell and became immobile she still had 2 litres left. I’d have thought there would have been a statement saying we’re still hopeful as Michael had x litres with him if he had water on him.

How is this odd?

No, I’m not family, but I’ve had stories about a family member and speculation about where they are and what they’ve done the on the front pages of newspapers and on social media. Have you?

It’s odd that you are aligning with the extreme posts.

can you not see that a lot of us are now trying to stop this extreme level of speculation and gruesome comments?

thebillcollector · 08/06/2024 21:31

This certainly changes the possibilities. Depression is crippling.

NoraBattysCurlers · 08/06/2024 21:32

Absolutely everything seems 'odd' to some mumsnet posters.

They don't get out much.

Well it has occurred to me that with his wife saying the family remains hopeful it is unlikely they have been told it is impossible.

Why would there be a statement like this, that’s a level of entitlement seldom seen,

PenelopeFeatherington · 08/06/2024 21:29

There really wasn't. Honestly now. Why are people reading so much into completely normal behaviour!

His walk seemed normal, and CCTV sometimes makes things look unnatural.

But where did he go after that clip where he looked in good physical shape. I imagine if its true he scaled the mountain then the outlook now is pretty bad. But if I had to bet id say hes not up that mountain.

SallyWD · 08/06/2024 21:33

thebillcollector · 08/06/2024 21:01

That direction looks absolutely bonkers to attempt. It looks really steep, rocky and no clear path. Surely he wouldn't have gone up there?!

I don't know - if you're a keen hiker you're used to walking in this type of terrain. The man said on the clip that MM might have been trying to go to the top then down and round to take him to where he was staying. So it's not that he wanted to spend hours walking on top of the mountains, but he wanted to go up and come down at the side. I do think he might have slipped when descending.

momtoboys · 08/06/2024 21:33

This is just a shame. I pray for his return.

What????

Instantcustard · 08/06/2024 21:37

5 litres is 5kg - a lot too carry unless you really think you'll need it. I've never carried more than 1 litre.

TheRomanticOutlaw · 08/06/2024 21:38

Sunnyandsilly · 08/06/2024 21:10

They are two hours ahead, and the point remains if there is no update it’s because there is nothing to say. If there was, some onlooker would have leaked it, there’d be images of emergency services or of him,

so there is no development. Ok??

I know they are two hours ahead. I'm in Rhodes. But if you say it's because there's nothing to say, then I shall bow to your superior knowledge. Perhaps you're at the scene and know everything that's going on. In which case my innocent answer to another poster who mentioned the lack of updates would naturally have irked you. OK??

If you read between the lines the Mayor is indicating it’s pretty impossible he’s still alive (if he’s gone across the barren landscape), most comment from those involved have used phrases suggesting this.

Have you seen how high it is though? Look on google earth for the 360 photo at Pontikokastro. There just seems no way he'd manage a 5 mile loop of that peninsula given the circumstances.

Did you mean to sound so superior and scathing?

I’m not aligning with the most extreme posts FFS. I don’t think that one post I’ve commented on is extreme. You don’t get to decide what’s categorically extreme or not. I’m sure others agree with you that it is. But likewise, as you’ll see from the comments, a few other people openly agree with me that the post wasn’t insensitive.

I note you didn’t answer my return Q about whether you’ve had the goings-on and whereabouts of your family members reported in the mainstream media on the front page and in TV. I’m assuming that’s a no.

I don’t want an argument. If you think comments are gruesome then follow MN’s rules and report.

The amount of water carried or access to water is at the crux of these survival stories in heat such as this.

GuinnessBird · 08/06/2024 21:41

I think if he had an accident and was rendered immobile then due to the weather I feel it is extremely unlikely that he will still be alive unfortunately.

RoseAndRose · 08/06/2024 21:42

Dearg · 08/06/2024 21:22

Raptors? Owls, falcons, hawks ,kites, eagles, buzzards etc… not extinct.

I think unusual behaviour from wildlife could assist searchers.

But nor raptors (who prefer to hunt living prey) but scavengers. Yes there can be overlap, with some species doing both.

He clearly had little to none on him and theres no shops once on that rocky route. Did he make it to agia marina cos thats the only source of refreshment on that route. No reports of him getting there. Otherwise its him and a totally barren wasteland, unless he did something unspeakable to a goat.

Oaktree55 · 08/06/2024 21:44

Byronada · 08/06/2024 21:34

What????

Several posters quoted rescue stories of people lost for c4 days. I’m pointing out these people were prepared and had a lot of water on them. They were hiking in remote places so prepared themselves for any problems which ensured their survival when they had accidents.

Acapulco12 · 08/06/2024 21:45

This is such a sad situation. I’m keeping all my hopes up and all my fingers crossed for a positive outcome though. I hope he is found safe.

CottageGardens · 08/06/2024 21:47

Sorry but if he's suffered crippling depression (see my previous link) from the past they must be looking into that.

Give it a rest already or tell us what you think happened? Depressed people dont walk into mountains and disappear into thin air? What do you think he did?

Yes it is really high but he probably does a lot of hillwalking. I have friends who do walks like this every weekend. What's so surprising is doing it in extreme heat. The only explanation I can think of is that he was very keen to get back to the house and completely underestimated how difficult the terrain was.
