I have my phone set to bbc news alerts for work purposes. Every time it sounds I rush to see if good news.

Silly question maybe but are they not using drones? Don’t think I’ve seen any mention of then, but surely a team of 10 or so drones could fairly quickly search that boulder area effectively, without people needing to scramble over it in the heat!

They are I saw a drone on the telly

iPreferBooks · 08/06/2024 18:23

Really hoping he's found :(
My Dad is of a similar age to him and is always leaving his phone at home even when he goes to work. Before covid we'd go on holiday and he'd take the dog along the beach/sanddunes many times without a phone.

Noones mentioned this but, I really hope the search party will also be checking any geocaching locations. I did do a quick google search to see if he does it, only downside is there's but no history of him ever mentioning it in any interviews.

MyTattooIsBetterThanYours · 08/06/2024 18:25

Why would you go geocaching if you haven’t got your phone?

I agree. Visiting many places of interest in Australia often involves a walk in 40 degree heat. My husband went on a walk in Death Valley in 50 degree heat. He returned unscathed.

Exactly. I know from holidays before the kids (pre hanging around the waterpark all day!)🙈 that we took risks as grown adults, swam on isolated beaches, no one knew where we were, just went off and stopped where we fancied, nothing was planned etc. 40 degrees to a well travelled person who is used to holidaying in that heat may not feel as dangerous as it sounds to someone who has rarely been on holiday in that heat.

BonifaceBonanza · 08/06/2024 18:26

I know it’s unlikely but I’m now really hoping he’s had a mental breakdown and is hiding in a clinic somewhere for the time being

decionsdecisions62 · 08/06/2024 18:27

@nobeans it's been clearly stated a number of times in different reports that drones are being used.

quizzys · 08/06/2024 18:28

I have no doubt that S+R have a strategy for searching in this terrain, and where... based on information gained through those who saw him last, the CCTV and so on.

It must be so frustrating for the family and S+R not to have found him yet. But perhaps this is not unusual in such an area I don't know.

The worst case scenario is that he is not found and searches are abandoned, second worst is that he is found but has died, and the best is that he is injured but is alive having found a water source and shade/shelter.

Obviously I'm hoping for the last one.

Namerchangee · 08/06/2024 18:29

Really hope he is found alive. Just had a thought that sometimes when on holiday you do take risks that you might otherwise not. Something about being on holiday, relaxing and breaking out of the usual routine perhaps. It does sound like he’s taken some sort of detour and wound up lost/injured.

DwarfBeans · 08/06/2024 18:30

Is it dark in Symi now? 😔

RosesAndHellebores · 08/06/2024 18:30

We have a home close to the foothills of the Pyrenees. DH has gone walking in midday heat, run out of charge, carried on for a view, got lost, returned extremely dehydrated to the village, spent an hour in a pub, drinking lots of water and two beers. He was gone for 9 hours and I was going to call the police at at 10pm. He strolled through the garden at 9.55pm. I cannot explain my concern at the time, falls, injuries, heart attack, wild boars.

He would easily say, if someone were droning on or if he were bored that he was tired or a bit under the weather to avoid tediousness that risked his impatience.

He is a very intelligent man with a brain the size of a planet and a very successful career. He is has taken risks.

We were lucky.

CremeFresh · 08/06/2024 18:33

@RosesAndHellebores his wife has said he was going for a walk, no mention of feeling unwell or tired.

my wife and I were chatting about this yesterday and she said that I am exactly the type of man that would do what Dr Moseley appears to have done i.e. gone off on a walk, in the heat, in an unfamiliar place, without my phone and without telling anyone. And she's right. I've actually done stuff like that loads of times, so I can well understand why he would have thought to himself "yeah, I'll be fine..."

Edited

My husband did this on an island in Australia. I was starting to get worried and he came back in. He had gone for a run. Usual for him. But it was about 30c and he hadn’t taken any water (which was stupid) this was before smart phones. He got lost in sand dunes and then came across a snake. Luckily he ran/jumped over it. He ended up having to take a different route back as he was disorientated and took much longer than planned to get back.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 08/06/2024 18:33

I've been listening to The Missing podcast over the last few months and people do disappear and sometimes are never found. I really really hope that this isn't the situation here but it does happen and in much more populated areas than this.

BonifaceBonanza · 08/06/2024 18:33

It’s been reported that he told her and friends he was feeling unwell, which of course he may or may not have been

Yes I know I saw them using one on the TV! I just said that. Jeez

Parrotseatthemall · 08/06/2024 18:40

Quite! choosing to holiday to get away from your everyday life means something different to many people..leaving your phone to charge in your room (when the signal is bad anyway) is not shocking when you lived in the days before the internet. Choosing to stay somewhere with everything on tap, all inclusive is not what you are looking for when you book Symi for sure.. as adults we are free to find new experiences, and ourselves in the process, but something has clearly gone wrong this time. It's not the fault of his family, friends or the Greek people

ducktapez · 08/06/2024 18:45

Why is the mayor saying things like the bolded part below to the media? Surely he can speak to the wife and friends to find the answer, and surely the emergency services already have.

Eleftherios Papakaloudoukas, the island’s longstanding mayor, said: “We know he came through Pedi and then walked onwards towards Agia Marina, it is about two miles and a harder walk than from St Nicholas, If he did try and walk that way to Symi then that is a big mistake.
“There are also many troubling questions here. Why did he leave the beach and his wife and friends?

Yeah seems inappropriate.

I am in Greece. Not as far south but it isn’t dark yet

I'm 35 and just came back from a holiday on a peaceful, quiet campsite surrounded in mountains. I very often left my phone at home. I don't think it's odd at all, especially as you say, he will remember days before phones.

JawJaw · 08/06/2024 18:50

@BonifaceBonanza
Which clinic? The population of Symi is only 2,500. If they have a clinic at all, how would he have got there without any taxi driver, bus driver or anyone else noticing? If for some reason he got a ferry to Rhodes someone would have noticed him. Most importantly, what kind of clinic would admit someone and not notify the police or his family?

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 08/06/2024 18:51

I don't suppose the mayor is media trained especially not for speaking to the international media. This must be pretty stressful and unusual for him too.

SallyWD · 08/06/2024 18:52

Lots of people do go walking in very high temperatures (often tourists!). I went to the south of Spain with friends during a heatwave. It got to 46/47 degrees and they wanted to walk around all day! They simply can't relax. They need to be out and about all the time. I can imagine MM being similar - not wanting to lie on a beach all day but wanting to look around.
I also know lots of intelligent men who take risks, such as my DH. He's a university professor but often takes unnecessary risks, in my opinion.
I'm wondering if MM went to the mountain top briefly then slipped when he was descending. I often slip when I'm going downhill. He could have got stuck in a crevice or something. I hope they're examining all the areas on the slope of the mountain.
