Following on from thread 1, linked below.

Let's hope the CCTV / sighting in town gives a glimmer of home that he made the walk from the beach to town ok.

Cmon now. Stop this. What’s wrong with you. They have no idea where he is, so they had to start somewhere, they are on a tiny Greek island that doesn’t have the resources the uk has.

Nothing wrong with me, but I wonder why you are keen to be on their side when it's obvious that the search has been flawed.

If you can't 'take' criticism that's justified, you have a problem.

They could have asked for help from another country.

A lot of rescue teams in the UK are volunteers e.g. Mountain Rescue, RNLI, St Johns Ambulance and then you have Special Constables assisting the police and probably loads I've forgotten.

yeah definitely! was one of them myself indeed for many years. my comment wasn’t to infer that the uk wasnt like this, but more to say that it’s v much this way in greece too, since a lot of the comments were talking about ‘specialists’ and ‘police’ etc!

'worrying news now, even locals would not have taken the path they think he has taken. deeply inadvisable route'

We keep hearing different things, initially 'it's a tiny island there's nowhere anyone could get lost' to now he took an inadvisable route to the 'mountains'. Why did it take so long for the cctv footage of him at the shop to emerge and even if they had been concentrating on the path from the beach surely a team searching on the pedi side from the start would've been a start.

Why aren't search and rescue teams from the UK assisting? Like when they rescued the boys in the tunnels in Thailand you'd think a massive combined effort would be justified.

He’s a 67 year old man not at all comparable to sending worldwide teams to rescue a group of children. The number of people on here who seem to think we should be sending teams from uk just because his career was in TV. People go missing like this relatively frequently abroad. We can’t mobilise teams for every missing person worldwide.

Its a tiny island regardless of which country it's part of, there are logistical issues in gathering a large search team with the necessary equipment

I'm not sure why posters are taking such offence at people remarking on that

I think it is more the way in which some of the remarks are being made, at least one poster did give a superior "we British do it better, what do you expect of a third world country like Greece?" response without any facts to back the statement up.

The Greeks seem to be quite slow and not very organised with all of this and don't have enough of the right equipment.

In the UK, the police use heat seeking cameras in helicopters and track down people during the night (criminals) . We hear them overhead at night in our small rural village.

And wouldn't call off a search once it was dark.

The Greek police have also focused completely on one path (to the small town where he was seen on cctv) which is known to be easy, rather than exploring all the area knowing he could have made his way to the villa via the hills.

Sorry but it's coming over as a bit of a cock up.

Indeed.

Of course heat seeking won't work during the day when it's hot that's why you use helicopters at night when it isn't hot. I mean who shuts up shop search wise at 8pm because its dark? By the time they ask international expert teams to assist it will be too late.

TheBloatedMiddle · 08/06/2024 09:22

How has the search been flawed? They swung into action immediately. It takes time to realise that yes the person is actually missing and not holed up in a bar somewhere. And then they flew specialist teams from Athens. FFS.

LOL the facts speak for themselves. He's British, and there is a large RAF base in Cyprus.

2 days to find and release Pedi cctv footage, they'd been looking in the wrong place until then.

kαλοκαλοκαιρι · 08/06/2024 08:58

hahaha well yes, obviously. i was more referring to the capacity (in physical numbers of people, time to arrange movements of people and equipment from Athens) and the budgets involved. Again - as I said, I’m only going by my personal experience working in similar- but not -identical roles in both countries (presently in Greece). Have a nice day!

Thank you I'm not going to have a nice day today unfortunately. I hope you do.

Not that much time. Athens isn't that far! I'm countering negative comments, not neutral ones.

I hate the Little Englander mentality that other countries just can't do what we can do.

Me too - it stinks the people already saying "cock up" on the basis of zero knowledge.
I wonder what fantastic work these armchair experts do that they are so qualified to judge the entire operation.

Well they spent two days searching a very easy path first off.

The likelihood now is that it won’t be good news. You generally have 24 hours to find someone that’s gone missing for it to be successful.

His children have flown out now so I assume they are supporting their mum with the likelihood that he won’t be found alive.

They often do. I've definitely heard them say they're having to stop and then they'll pick up the search in the morning

OK. Again, when did we find out he'd got as far as Pedi? Yesterday. It gives a snapshot, no?

Baklavamama · 08/06/2024 09:27

I’ve told my DH if I ever go missing please don’t stop looking for me at 8pm.

Yeah exactly The police know more than we do... as one would hope and expect. But people sitting in their comfy chairs refreshing social media with their middle fingers presume to know more and understand more.

'They often do. I've definitely heard them say they're having to stop and then they'll pick up the search in the morning'

Only in dangerous and inhospitable areas where there is a risk to the searchers, or when there are extreme weather conditions. Not an idyllic Greek island where wandering about with torches or flying a helicopter surely isn't a risk to anyone. You'd think it'd be better in the dark as cooler.

That's the funniest thing I have heard in weeks - heat-seeking camera's don't work in the day when it's hot...
😂😂

They do

greengreyblue · 08/06/2024 09:30

It does always surprise me when they stop searching at night. They’re the experts though. I’d think the cooler temps at night and lights wouldn’t be a silly idea. But again I’m not an expert. His adult chn have flown out so no doubt they’re all doing everything they can.

Disturbia81 · 08/06/2024 09:07

If I or my loved ones went missing, I'd love it if people became obsessed with it. More critical minds trying to figure out. More people caring. Don't get the problem with it.
It's when people don't care thats a problem.

Have you worked out where Ben Needham is then?

OneBadKitty · 08/06/2024 09:31

Walkers go missing fairly frequently- often the search takes awhile and sadly they often found deceased.

A relative on mine went missing while walking on Glencoe. It took rescue workers four days to find his body.

So you are an expert - why not offer to fly out and run things for them?
Unlike you I don't presume to know what is happening from the media coverage. Everything we have been told is subject to being wrong, journalists aren't renowned for accuracy. It is far too soon (and ultimately pointless) to be sitting here aggressively criticising the Police and others looking for him.

greengreyblue · 08/06/2024 09:32

@Janiie there is cctv footage of him in Pedi with a parasol 30 mins after leaving the beach. It’s all over the news.
