Maybe Reforms complete hatred of anyone not male or white will be more reported...

Quisling.

Well quite...

I read the times article at the weekend

I remain scared of labours plans for self ID

Calling me a tory won't change my mind 🙄

Labours plan is to simplify the GRC process.

It should be remembered that anyone who wants a GRC will be given one, the success rate is 96%, with the other 4% failing due to admin.

Labour is going to put the GRC process out for consultation, that may mean changes, toughening up, easing or staying the same.

Tories though want to scare people, just like they lied about Labours tax plans.

I genuinely don't think The Times is a reliable source of information. They really are obsessed with the issue. Not quite sure why - think it is possibly because they now have Ditum and Freeman writing (lots) for them.

I honestly, given their ownership , do not expect them to be bias free on their presentation of the issue.

Pedallleur · 10/06/2024 15:39

Ian Gribbin, the party's candidate in Bexhill and Battle, also wrote online that women were the "sponging gender" and should be "deprived of health care".

no daughters then and prob single! Also the NHS and prob private medicine employ a lot of women so lets hope he doesnt need treatment/surgery/consultation by a woman. Suspect he harbours similar views about anyone who isnt white, male and english

I'm trying to imagine the local Tory party members who thought I know this is the guy I want people to vote for in my Constituency as our representative to parliament.

It wouldn't be at all surprising if Braverman defected to Reform, but I guess it probably depends where she sees her best chance of getting into a position of power.

The reason I don't think she will is my constituency is a Tory stronghold. Some defections to reform but probably not enough to keep her as MP for the area.

Scruffily · 10/06/2024 15:59

Notonthestairs · 10/06/2024 13:51

Braverman wants to bring Reform into the Conservative Party -

A Reform UK candidate claimed the country would be "far better" if it had "taken Hitler up on his offer of neutrality" instead of fighting the Nazis in World War Two.
Ian Gribbin, the party's candidate in Bexhill and Battle, also wrote online that women were the "sponging gender" and should be "deprived of health care".

Gribbin posted on the UnHerd website.
UnHerd is owned by Paul Marshall who also owns GBNews.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cjmmrwexv4ko

I suspect Braverman has no problem whatsoever with Mr Gribbin's views. She would probably like to make them mainstream Conservative policy, not excluding copying Hitler's ideas about the use of concentration camps.

Notonthestairs · 10/06/2024 16:00

I don't think Braverman would defect - she'd immediately lose access to the Conservative machinery and money.

She'll put herself forward as a candidate in the summer leadership election (they come round so quickly don't they?!). Still unlikely to win in my view but with sufficient votes to wangle herself another go at (shadow) Home Secretary under Patel. Jenrick will give her a run for her money though. And they'll share Opinion pieces for the Telegraph for the next 5 years.

BIossomtoes · 10/06/2024 16:08

Do you think Patel stands a chance of leadership? My money’s on Mordaunt if she survives the election. I don’t think we can make any predictions until we know who’s left on 5 July.

Scruffily · 10/06/2024 16:08

Bigcoatlady · 10/06/2024 14:34

The Reform response on that is more horrifying 'His historical perspective of what the UK could have done in the 30s was shared by the vast majority of the British establishment including the BBC of its day, and is probably true.'

That seems to be both wrong in fact - from early 1938 most British people knew war was inevitable, they just wanted to avoid and/or delay it whilst we built up our military capacity. And wrong morally - with 20/20 hindsight the Nazi plans always involved invasions of other European countries so appeasement was always just placating bullies. Its an open debate whether or not if we'd gone to war earlier with less resource and a less clearcut case for action than the invasion of Poland that would have had a better outcome.

But this take seems to be its for other countries to choose if they want to be lead by facists and commit genocide...

Which we all knew was Reform's position but its fucking indefensible. Its also why a Reform takeover of the Tories would mean the end of the Tories. We'd need a new centre right party to evolve to replace them because the Tories would just be a far-right populist party.

They're probably right that, for a time at least, some sections of the British public would have been better off if we had signed a Peace Treaty. The rich, for instance, and Mosley and his mates. Not people of the wrong religion or colour, not travellers, not people deemed mentally defective. Even those who thought they were better off would have started noticing pretty quickly that Hitler wasn't keeping to his treaty obligations and was ignoring anything they had to say on the subject.

Yes I think Patel stands a chance.

I'm not suggesting it's nailed on. Mordaunt, Patel, Cleverly and Badenoch all poll consistently well with Conservative members.

As you say it will depend on which MPs succeed in July. I have sort of assumed Braverman will be flushed out early doors and then will horse trade for position using her group of supporters as leverage - and I think she'd rather work with Patel as they are both willing to bring Farage in.

tobee · 10/06/2024 16:25

But isn't she far too centrist/wishy washy for current party? No amount of Thatcher hair cosplay can cover for that? Suppose it would depend if she reinvented herself totally.

tobee · 10/06/2024 16:28

Totally off topic but I just opened door to delivery person and I can smell chimney smoke. In June. SW London. This is a comment on the 💨🥶 weather rather than anything wider 😀

dontcallmelen · 10/06/2024 16:39

I went out earlier, vest jumper coat & boots it’s blinking cold I’m in south east London, had the heating on last night.

Looks like we're getting a winter election after all!

How many MPs will they need as backers to get onto the members ballot?

If for instance they need 25 MPs signatures and MPs (excepting of course Grant Shapps) can only support one MP, then there won't be many candidates!

Not really a great pull for the Tories in a CoL crisis.

hehe! The threshold for nomination varies each leadership election. I doubt the threshold will be set at a 100 as it was last time around! I'm sure the 1922 Committee have a magic formula for these things.

IClaudine · 10/06/2024 17:02

Just listening to Bridget Phillipson on LBC. She did really well. Answered questions calmly and sensibly.

Probably going to be 3 each at this rate.

Very late check in but long time lurker and love the threads. You keep me informed.

Saw a reform poster in a window today in a prominent position. Make Britain Better Again 🙄

Have been leaflet dropping and door knocking. Been asked once about Brexit and once about single sex spaces and trans issues, mainly concerning ASD and young teenage girls. Both voting Labour. Labour supports the Cass review and is committed to single sex spaces.

This time next month there's going to be a new Government. A change we're all wanting.

RafaistheKingofClay · 10/06/2024 18:07

The thing about Mordaunt is she has to appeal to the same membership that thought making Liz Truss PM was a good idea.

I just thought you'd find it funny ....

Sorry, wasn’t referring to your post at the top of the picture but the labour ad underneath it.

Cheguevarahamster · 10/06/2024 18:09

Cleverly had pulled out of R4PM at the last minute with no explanation. Good optics..
