Just that really. Will he be found?

My husband and I are a similar age to Dr Mosley and would never go on a tricky walk like that without at least one charged phone between us.

So what though? Why do people constantly need to say “I wouldn’t have done that”.

If you read my whole post rather than just the snippet you've pasted in above, I suggested people were just saying what they would do and giving reasons. This is what posters usually do on MN. I was responding to people younger than me who seemed to be implying that MM and others in their 60s, e.g. me, are less likely to have a mobile with them at all times. I don't think that's a factor. My 91yo Mum is in a minority in her generation in not using a mobile phone to access the internet and send texts. Those of us who are now in our 60s have been using mobiles for nigh on quarter of a century.

Pollipops1 · 06/06/2024 16:58

I did read your whole post but I’m not obliged to answer it in a particular way. I don’t understand the need for you and all the other posters to moralise re the phone.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 06/06/2024 17:03

It is indeed very worrying isn't it? Sad As has been said, it doesn't look good at all. Most people don't just go off on their own and lose contact with everyone just to get a bit of time to themselves! I hope he is OK, but I have a bad feeling about him. I actually really like Michael Moseley.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 06/06/2024 17:05

They'd requested drones to help in the search which hopefully will be there by now so fingers crossed they can locate him. I'm comforted by the fact that he might've gone inland and got lost as a PP said.

He's a popular celebrity so it's understandable that people are concerned. I was just in a work meeting and couldn't help thinking about him.

MidnightMeltdown · 06/06/2024 17:05

Poor man, that's really sad. He's been missing for over 24 hours now. It's not looking good. He was on foot and they know roughly where he went, so the search area can't be that huge.

I suppose there's a possibility that he could have been kidnapped, in which case he might still be alive.

I don't get how people are suspicious about his phone, we've just come back from holiday - most days my phone and apple watch were left in the room as had no need for them, we'd go for walks and be out and about without it all day, isn't that just normal holiday behaviour?

Not usual for me - I use my phone for directions, as a camera, etc. and I use my watch for telling the time and tells us how far we walked at the end of the day, etc.

However dh will leave his phone in the hotel often. He knows that if he had it he will be tempted to look at work emails when out and about, so avoids that. He is ordinarily with me and/or dd who do have phones with us though,

But I can imagine a scenario when with others, who do have phones, deciding to take an earlier walk back or go a different route for some reason, and forgetting you didn't have your phone with you.

I agree. No-one I know would go off for a long walk (knowing they were going to be away a number of hours,) and not take their phone. Just wouldn't happen. Very odd thing to do. Only time I don't take mine is if I am popping out somewhere for just 5-10 minutes.

LadyMuckRake · 06/06/2024 17:09

I reallyhope he shows up. I've followed all his health docs for the last decade +

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 06/06/2024 17:10

I guess this brings it home how small and remote a place it is. I would have hoped there would be more resources available.

'Right now there are four police, eight firemen, a drone and seven volunteers involved in the operation.'

Longma · 06/06/2024 17:11

I can also imagine a scenario wheee someone who is very into health and mental wellbeing going off for a walk leaving their phone behind, as a digital detox type of thing.

Due to safety reasons it isn't something I'd do, and would discourage any friends/family from doing so if walking alone,

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 06/06/2024 17:12

Gosh, this sounds worrying. Hope he's found safe.

This piece on the BBC news site is in poor taste I feel - reads like an obituary in places: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8770jyz6vvo

Michael Mosley: Who is missing TV doctor and diet guru?

Michael Mosley, 67, who is a popular TV doctor, was last seen on Greek island Symi on Wednesday.

And you have never, not once in your life, ever forgotten it?

UnemployedNotRetired · 06/06/2024 17:13

Island is only about 4miles x 6 miles or something ... though rugged terrain and of course surrounded by water. Anyway, hard not to be found one would think.

Sue152 · 06/06/2024 17:14

It's crazy to me that people can't imagine 5 minutes away from their phone, even on holiday. I don't even own a mobile phone so when I go off for long dog walks alone I don't have one. I'm in my 40's.

Disturbia81 · 06/06/2024 17:16

Just so unlike someone so health conscious to walk back a dangerous path with no phone knowing he might get into trouble and have no water in the heat. I always enjoy listening to him and watching him. Really hoping for a positive result

As a family member or friend I would find this really grating. It bothers me immensely that I can’t even simply text DM to ask if she wants a coffee or contact her in an emergency.. she is in her 80s though so a bit different than 40 where it’s a conscious decision not to own one.

Do you not worry that your children / parents can’t get in touch with you in an emergency?

You would if you already knew where you are walking to has no phone signal.

Who said people can't spend 5 minutes away from their phone? Confused

What an odd comment.

Just because someone always takes their phone with them when they go out, (and they go out say, for 4 hours,) that doesn't mean they're using it for the whole 4 hours FFS. People take it so people have a point of contact for them, and so they have it in an emergency.

Is your comprehension normally so bad?

DH frequently goes out without his phone, especially if he’s just going on a quick lunchtime walk when working from home.

LaBelleEtLeBadBoy · 06/06/2024 17:20

Are people still going on about phones 🫤

Wouldn't happen.

If you went for a long walk/you were away for a number of hours, there would be somewhere along the way that has a phone signal FGS. 🙄

And yes I WOULD always take my phone, and so would everyone I know (if we were going off for a number of hours!)

MaliceInWanderland · 06/06/2024 17:24

God can't believe people are STILL wanting on about mobile phones.

MarvellousMidgeMaisel · 06/06/2024 17:26

Massive speculation here but I wonder if he was fasting and fainted with the heat and exertion.

decionsdecisions62 · 06/06/2024 17:26

A phone isn't much good if you take a catastrophic fall off a cliff edge! Wait let me just call...
