He wasn't trekking though. He walked a coastal path that everyone uses and which the local authorities have said is safe.

Bad shit happens to people, it doesn't mean they were stupid.

And Ms Bulley didn't die in shallow water so no need to rehash that.

Not in that heat, with medical issues having not acclimatised to the heat only just having arrived from uk they probably weren’t. Locals in these areas tend to have common sense and I’d bet my bottom dollar there weren’t many nearly 70year old locals heading off at this time of day!

You don't know if he has any medical issues. I doubt if he was seriously ill that his wife and friends would have left him to walk alone. And he was carrying an umbrella so he did intend to have some shelter from the sun.

Oaktree55 · 07/06/2024 13:20

I do know he had medical issues he’s quoted in interviews talking about them

Everyone I know has medical issues.

It comes with being human.

This is what I'm hoping too. That he might've lost his memory again and been taken in by someone without a TV.

Hes he had this before?Memory loss?

Don't go on the Mccann thread. It's worse. Some absolute crackpots.

I’m close to his age and have just had an over 60’s mot test. No medical issues.

So far.

RacingLine · 07/06/2024 13:26

victim blaming!

it always happens on here. No doubt makes some posters feel better about themselves. It's very Daily Fail.

Any evidence? He had type 2 diabetes and fatty liver many years ago but he himself has said they both went away with his lifestyle changes.

Okay. I'm happy to hear that.

I'm sad to say that absolutely everyone I know has medical issues.

Ranging in severity. But everyone has something.

Either fibroids, endometriosis, diabetes, recovering from cancer, heart issues etc

It has obviously escaped your notice that life expectancy has fallen. The median age for women dying in the UK is 83 years old.

But it’s higher than it was when ‘elderly’ was ‘officially’ defined. I don’t think it’s consistent to have 65 as officially ‘elderly’ when the retirement age is now 67 and probably set to rise.

BreatheAndFocus · 07/06/2024 13:31

User14March · 07/06/2024 13:11

@BreatheAndFocus someone has reported seeing him at bus stop, not discounted yet I think. Cafe CCTV man sighted distinct from this I think. Unclear.

Re: heading to cool off in sea, how easy from that path if climbing up away from beach? Clambering down rocks likely involved?

Thanks. The report I read said walking past a bus stop, so I wasn’t clear if he was waiting for a bus or just passing. However, whether he was waiting for a bus or not, he clearly didn’t get on one as if he had, there would have been witnesses on the bus.

Yes, not ideal to be climbing over rocks to get to the sea, but if he felt he was succumbing to the heat, it might have been a way to cool off. He could also have left the path looking for shade from larger rocks or bushes, become worse and been unable to move on. In that case, he could be partially hidden from the drones. If he’s on land, I hope the dog helps. If he’s in the water, then I hope he’s found quickly. It’s very sad whatever’s happened. He did nothing wrong.

BettyUnderswoob · 07/06/2024 13:10

For goodness sake we have NO IDEA what happened here. It's utterly distasteful to claim MMs disappearance is as a result of "stupid decisions" . He has loved ones who must be distraught right now.
Have some sense and compassion.

Quite! This thread is completely ridiculous - obviously apart from those saying "how awful".

Catstaps · 07/06/2024 13:32

tge Only scenario I can see is that he’s felt unwell with the heat , gone near the waters edge to cool off.. even gone in .. and drowned. At this stage can’t see a ups other explanation

AutumnLeaf1989 · 07/06/2024 13:33

I find it odd that if he were to have had a medical episode then why hasn't he been found? Is it possible he found somewhere hidden away from view? I can only think this might be the case? Either that or he's left the island as a pp said or worst case is he has ended up in the sea somehow 😔

BettyUnderswoob · 07/06/2024 13:33

FGS the official onset of "elderly" is just as relevant to this thread as the meaning behind certain emojis, and whether or not individual posters always take their phone with them... i.e. not at all.

I would like to add that this thread is a rare enough thing on MN, where the subject of the thread is universally liked and admired. It is not very often that I have seen every post as positive and supportive of this man.

Whatever the outcome, if any of his family ever read this thread, it will be such a positive and heartening thing for them to read.

He is obviously well liked, loved and admired by many. I said "is" until we know something different.

Yes. Even my 17yo messaged me when he heard the news he'd gone missing. We always listen to Just One Thing in the car.

cloudofbats · 07/06/2024 11:41

Type in high five and it comes up there as well.

Not on my phone it doesn't. I type pray and a little emoji pops up. Same for smile, laugh, cry etc nothing for hi5, highfive or high five

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 07/06/2024 13:38

Hes he had this before?Memory loss?

Yes, there is an article linked earlier in the thread that says he had a temporary period of amnesia brought on by cold water swimming. My best hope is that he's become temporarily incapacitated and is safely inside somewhere unable to communicate. I know it's unlikely but most of the other potential scenarios don't bear thinking about.

It's medical. The risk of Alzheimers for example, doubles after age 65. The risk of stroke doubles every decade after age 55. Certain cancers have similar age risk factors.

There are so many more health risks and contraindications. Age is a known, well researched factor when assessing anything from a medical POV, and that's why the medical community uses age as factors when calculating risks (among other things)

It is relevant, when other posters are saying MM was elderly, so he should have done, or not have done x,y or z. If you read a comment on a discussion forum and disagree with it, you are allowed to put your own point of view. That’s how a discussion forum works! FGS.

He is 67. We know he is 67. It is well known that being 67 means certain conditions or problems are more or less likely than being 27.

Whether or not 67 is officially classed as "elderly" is irrelevant to this fact, as well as to this thread. It's just a word.

Gunnersforthecup · 07/06/2024 13:49

I was on a small Mediterranean island with DH and the kids about 18 months ago. DH suddenly took it into his head to go for a walk rather insistently. I was really alarmed at how dangerous the path was, on a steep cliffside, with our feet sliding on little stones without much grip. It went very quickly from "oh what a lovely, healthy thing to be doing on holiday" (DH), to "oh my God, we need to be very careful or we could have a really serious accident"(me, while trying to smile, keep positive and suggest helpful things to get us to safety). That was the first thing that came into my mind when I heard about this. I really hope he's ok.
