My general assumption is that no one did anything stupid or blameworthy - however tempting it might be for us in our armchairs and ivory towers. He might not have felt ill before he set off just that 'it's a big hot for me I'll go back to the cool of the house'. Or maybe he wanted to go back to do some reading or write his newspaper column or make a few calls. Most likely whatever misadventure that occurred was an unforeseen accident and we should veer on the side of sympathy and compassion for all involved.

Delatron · 07/06/2024 12:57

I’ve reread the reports. Not sure how accurate they are. It is reported that he’d planned to walk to the town to get the bus (this makes more sense).

So the crucial part is did he make it to town. The sighting in town is key. He clearly didn’t plan to walk the whole hour plus route.

MyQuaintDog · 07/06/2024 12:59

@Pelham678 NO ONE is saying sixties is elderly and frail. What we are saying is that although you can still exercise and go walks, your body is not as tough as it was. I am in my sixties and sports injuries take forever to recover from now, far far longer than in my twenties. You are more at risk of hypothermia and heat stroke as you age. These are biological facts no matter how many marathons you run.

If he did develop heat stroke, the very early symptoms are I feel a bit hot and tired. Its your body saying go into a cooler place. But feeling a bit hot and tired is normal after travelling abroad the previous day and then lying on the beach. Many people do not sleep well the first night in a strange bed so would be used to being a bit more tired than usual the next day.

ElleLeopine · 07/06/2024 13:03

Is it possible that he has left the island altogether? Got the bus from Pedi to Symi and then got on a ferry?

BreatheAndFocus · 07/06/2024 13:05

People underestimate the affect of heat alone. I’ve travelled to very hot countries when younger and been fine. I felt hot but that was it. But, I’ve since developed a medical condition and am obviously older. For the last 3 years or so, I’ve found the heat affects me differently now. I actually feel ill.

It doesn’t matter whether you consider 67 old or not. As the years pass in adulthood, you become more susceptible to the heat and to heat stroke. Both things can be true: 67 isn’t particularly old; a person of 67 is more vulnerable to the heat than they were at 27.

If MM was feeling ill, I think it unlikely he’d walk back to Pedi and then get on a bus to go exploring. Not only that, the driver and passengers would have seen him and be reporting it now. If he was seen in Pedi, any mishap happened on the walk between there and the house. If he was near the sea on that walk, or approached it hoping to cool off, it’s possible he fell.

I think his reported illness and/or the heat led to a medical incident.

@ElleLeopine he’s been gone x3 days so unlikely.

MattDamon · 07/06/2024 13:05

A beach bar worker said she saw Dr Michael Mosley prior to his disappearance on Wednesday and said: "I thought it was strange."

Chrisa Zauroudi recalled seeting the TV doctor and his wife Clare on a sun bed in the shade of a tree, adding: “I saw him walk across the beach and then he went to the steps [to the path]. He walked about half way up and then he looked and walked back down and he returned to his wife."

She continued: “A little while later I saw him leave. He stopped to look at the drinks on the bar and then he went back to the steps. It was about 1.30pm

"He was carrying a purple umbrella. I didn’t see him again. It was very hot, too hot, like today. I thought it was strange to walk when it was so hot.”

The Mirror reports the beach is served by water taxi services but the boats back to Symi were not due until 4pm.

Uh no. It was 95F in shade Wednesday I don’t know humidity. To trek in midday sun, with no phone, known heart disease and have medical training is nothing but irresponsible. There is no other way of spinning this. Tragic yes but don’t justify it so others make stupid decisions!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/06/2024 13:07

I suppose they have checked the hospitals? If he's unconscious and unable to say who he is...?

fungipie · 07/06/2024 13:07

Bouledeneige · 07/06/2024 12:05

These days 67 is not elderly. Over 75 or 80 is elderly.

Nevertheless the effects of heat can be debilitating for anyone and the older you are the more likely it is to be impactful.

Over 80 for me. 67 is definitely NOT elderly! That is ridiculous.

maudelovesharold · 07/06/2024 13:09

LapinR0se · 07/06/2024 12:14

I just googled and apparently the definition of elderly is in fact over 65. I think that’s crazy, as to me elderly means 80+. But there you go.

The definition of ‘elderly’ is a social construct, decided on, by those who decide these things, many decades ago, before the significant increase in life expectancy. It’s not immutable. Maybe we should redefine the term. As a pp said, if you’re young enough to work, you’re young enough not to be categorised as elderly!

For goodness sake we have NO IDEA what happened here. It's utterly distasteful to claim MMs disappearance is as a result of "stupid decisions" . He has loved ones who must be distraught right now.
Have some sense and compassion.

This is honestly ridiculous. The median age for women to die is 82 in the UK. You can't say you only become elderly on average 2 years before you die.

User14March · 07/06/2024 13:11

@BreatheAndFocus someone has reported seeing him at bus stop, not discounted yet I think. Cafe CCTV man sighted distinct from this I think. Unclear.

Re: heading to cool off in sea, how easy from that path if climbing up away from beach? Clambering down rocks likely involved?

It has obviously escaped your notice that life expectancy has fallen. The median age for women dying in the UK is 83 years old.

It’s irrelevant what happened I’m stating the fact that trekking in those circumstances IS STUPID. Many on here seem to thinks it’s a reasonable course of action 🤦🏽‍♀️ what’s actually happened none of us yet know however it’s perfectly acceptable to counter some of the misinformation on this thread. Reminiscent of Nicola Bully and you can’t drown in shallow water!

Rubbishconfession · 07/06/2024 13:15

My mum is 70, she is very much 'elderly'. Perhaps it's a relative term.

He wasn't trekking though. He walked a coastal path that everyone uses and which the local authorities have said is safe.

Bad shit happens to people, it doesn't mean they were stupid.

And Ms Bulley didn't die in shallow water so no need to rehash that.

Exactly. He's been missing for 3 days and no trace has been found of him on a very small island. So perhaps he is no longer on the island?

👏🏻 disgusting lack of compassion from some posters on this thread.

Invent · 07/06/2024 13:17

The elderly thing is like having a "geriatric pregnancy" because you are over 35.:I mean loads of women have healthy pregnancies at 35 and over but it's down to statistics.
I secretly hope he's done a runner. An unhappy marriage and work pressure no one knew about. We will all be surprised when he shows up in 10 years looking amazing after being on the Greek diet.
The alternative is really sad.
